MAYOR WAS CALLED UPON The "Girl from Rector's" which appears at the Gennett theater this evening, "The Clansman," which appears at the same theater tomorrow evening, and "The Blue Mouse" which appears at the Murray theater, tomorrow evening, were considered today by the Ministerial association from different view points, but the first and last shows, particularly, from the morality standpoint. Although the association would have desired, If in its power, to stop the J performances of "The Girl from Rector's" and "The Blue Mouse," yet it does not have the authority, and so ; this afternoon, Mayor Zimmerman was j called upon by the Rev. T. J. Graham, i the Rev. D. C. Huntington and the Rev. j Conrad Huber, the committee on good , citizenship and morals. Their visit j was for the purpose of obtaining police supervision of the plays. A resolution of sympathy for the stand which the colored population of the city has taken against the presentation of "The Clansman," was adopted unanimously. The colored people take exception to the play because of the race animosity usually resulting, following the show's appearance. WAS A TRESPASSER And the Mayor Soaked Charles Abetz for $12 and Jail Sentence. HE APPROPRIATED A RIG Charles Abetz was assessed a fine of $2 and costs and given an additional jail sentence of 10 days In the city court this morning for malicious tresX'aas. j Abetz. who is an employee of the i Richmond Abbatoir company, was ar-1 rested Saturday night for taking a I ' horse and rig from the barn of the Abbatoir without permission and ap-. propriating it for his own use. The fine in cases of trespass is made just twice as much as the amount of damage resulting. Abetz gained considerable notoriety last summer by "shooting up" Needmore. He was later arrested fined and convicted of stealing a suit case from a traveling man of Cincinnati at the local Pennsylvania depot. REPORT Oil COTTON (American News Service) Washington, Jan. 10. Propounded In Proso, It Wat Answered In Rhyme. In the olden ilrae before the war, the days so famous for generous hospitality In the south, a brilliant party was assembled at dinner In a beautiful country homestead. Across the table wit Cashed back and forth, and the guests began to vie with one another in proposing conundrums. Mr. Alexander II. Stephens offered ne which puzzled the whole company, "What is It that we eat at breakfast and drink at dinner?" For some time no answer came, and the bright eyes of the southern orator began to sparkle with triumph, when Colonel Johnson, taking up the "Con monplace Book" of the hostess, which lay conveniently by, wrote Impromptu upon the flyleaf the following answer: What is eaten for breakfast and drunken for dinner? Is It coffee or eggs or butter or meats? Euro double the stomach of obdurate sinner Who eats what he drinks and drinks what be eats. But let us consider. 'Tls surely not butter Nor coffee nor meats, whether broiled r roast. Nor boiled eggs nor poached nor fried In a batter. It must. then, be bread. Ah. yes when 'tis toast! JAIL BIRDS MERRY When Minister Thoughtlessly Said "Glad to See So Many Present. HE MADE RAPID RETREAT An absent minded remark may often lead to the greatest confusion and so with the case of a local well known minister, whose name is withheld in the fear that its publicity would only tend to further his embarrassment. It all happened at the county jail, so the story runs. The preacher in question had been invited to talk to the prisoners in that institution and. declaring that he would be pleased to use his influence towards furthering the cause of the social and moral uplift of this community, accepted the invitation with alacrity. The prisoners were all assembled. The minister appeared before them and this is how he began: "Brethren, I am glad to see so many assembled before me on this beautiful morning." Then the gentleman of the cloth realized what he had said. He stammered, then stopped, grew very red in the face and the rude prisoners were not a single bit sympathetic for they laughed derisively, which only added to his confusion. Collecting himself, somewhat, the minister than began again, this time something on this order: "No, I don't mean thaL I mean I am glad to see you all here. No, no, no. that isn't it either. I-M-" By this time the mirth of the prisoners gave vent to such hilarity that the preacher beat a hasty retreat through the nearest exit and is firmly resolved never again to accept a similar invitation. MILLS ENTERS KICK William Mills registered a complaint to the board or works this morning because of the fact that be was discharged from the fire department. Last summer. Mills, who was fireman at Company No. 2. mashed his foot while, fighting the St. Andrew's church fire. Since then he has been off duty for a majority of the time and recently has been serving as extra man. He contends that it is because of the injury to his foot that he wa3 dismissed and does not think he has been given fair treatment. At the meeting of the board it waa also ordered that ashes be placed across the street at the corner of Seventh and Main for the purpose of making walking easier for pedestrians. There is a spot about ten feet square as smooth as glass and almost everyone who walks over it suffers a jolt to his dignity. Executor's Sale
