IS SMALLEST HERO
London, Jan. 7. The smallest hero ever honored by King Edward, who had a bronze medal pinned on his youthful chest by His Majesty in the Throne Room of Buckingham Palace. The brave deed which won for the boy this unusual honor, was performed at Newport a few months ago. The timber in a trench in which, a number of men were working collapsed burying the victims beneath a mass of the heavy lumber. Young Tom wriggled down through the network of timbers and despite the fact that he might have been crushed to death at any moment, he sawed and chiselled to free the men who were pinned down.
NOW THE STORY OF THE SOLD
IER'S GALLANT DEED HAS BEEN GAZETTED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE ARMY.
WILLIE IS ELUSIVE
William A. Medsker, the Cambridge City attorney, whom the counsel for the American Bonding company has been endeavoring to get in the circuit court to make a report in the matter of the guardianship of heirs of James Metz, seems to be elusive. Yesterday he and his father appeared in the circuit court in the afternoon hut as the counsel or representatives of the plaintiff company were not present, nothing could be done. Mr. Medsker told the court that he would appear in the circuit court this orning but nothing was seen of mm By court attaches up until 2 o'clock. An affidavit charging him with contempt of court has been filed in the circuit court and it is probable that even more aggressive action will be taken at the Monday session of the court.

New York, Jan. 8. A copy of an
order issued in the Philippines, which calls the attention of the army to the
gallant conduct of Private Jeremiah Cronin of the Twenty-third infantry, has just been sent throughout the army by the war department. The order, officially, captioned "gallant
conduct," tells what Cronin did, and
this, according to officer on Gover
nors Island, was one of the bravest acts in the history of the service.
Army men who have served in the Moro country in the Philippines are
a unit in declaring that the hardest
man to kill in the world is the Mohammedan fanatic among the Moros. Col. Scott, superintendent of the Military Academy at West Point, who was for several years in command of operations against the Moros, has said that the Moro bolo is the deadliest thing in the world in the hands of a Moro. An Unequal Fight. Jerry Cronin, according to the order issued in the Department of Mindanao and signed by Lieut. gF. S. Young, his batallion adjutant; did
nothing more or less than fight with a
stick of kindling wood a Moro armed
with a bolo. This was in a district of
Mindanao, where the Twenty-third infantry was on duty.
The Moro's weapon, the order states, was "a heavy, keen edged
working bolo."
The order says that Private Harry
Smith of the Twenty-third, "while
walking unarmed, about seventy-five yards in the rear of his barracks at
6:40 a. m.," was surprised and assault
ed by a bolo-armed Moro. The Moro
first inflicted a wound in the back of Smith's head, then he struck him on
the left arm. The force of this blow
threw Smith to the ground with such force that his shoulder was dislocat
ed. Thus he was absolutely at the
mercy of the Moro.
Here Cronin Enters.
At this point Cronin comes into the affair. Cronin happened to leave the
barracks and, hearing Smith's cry,
hurried to the rescue. Cronin had no arms of any kind, but he knew he had no time to lose if Smith's life was td be saved. Seizing a stick of kindling wood that was lying on the
ground Cronin started for the Moro.
The Moro was just about to end Smith's struggles with another blow
of his bolo when Cronin rushed upon him. U
Then began the strange single com
bat. For ten minutes Cronin and the
Moro fought, the soldier deftly parry
ing every swing of the bolo with his stick of kindling wood. The noise of the struggle was heard in the barracks and an armed detachment of
soldiers was sent to aid Cronin. The rescuing soldiers were unable
to fire at first, without danger of hitting Cronin. He shouted to them to take up a certain position, adding that he would fight the Moro into range at the same time covering himself.
He did it, and the soldiers began firing. Half a dozen steel capped bul
lets were imbedded in the Moro's
body before he gave up fighting and fell to the ground, dead. The order in which the story of Jerry Cronin is told closes by stating that his "coolness and presence of mind, and his fearless attack with only a club on a desperate well-armed Moro, indicate high soldiery qualities and reflect credit not only upon himself, but upon his company and regiment as well." In passing it may be added that "Jerry" is on his way home with his regiment now.

IS LATEST
AIRSHIP
London, Jan. 7. A man propelled aeroplane is the latest invention which has been brought to an accomplished fact by Messrs. C. G.. Spencer and sons. The total area of the machine is 100 square feet, and it weighs about 50 pounds. The length of wings from tip to tip is 20 feet. The propeller can be worked to give 600 revolutions in the air by a process of pedalling, as on an ordinary cycle, and when in the air a descent can easily be made at the desire of the aerial cyclist. The ends of the wings are moveable and are controlled from a handbar by wires, which, it is claimed, will easily control the machine in flight. The tail Is also moved in the same way. The shape of the aeroplane resembles that of a bird, and a running start is necessary on the summit of rising ground.
ADVENTURE OF COOK
Paris, Jan. 7. A cook named Gubatto and his wife have recently been sentenced to two years imprisonment and a heavy fine as the result of a most remarkable experience. They masqueraded as members of the Austrian imperial family for two years and during that time swindled tradesmen of Paris out of many thousands of dollars worth of jewels, furs and dress wear.
