Receipts 7,000 hogs, 1,700 cattle and 400 sheep, against 4,564 hogs, 1,583 cattle and 156 sheep a week ago, and 6,285 hogs, 1.9S7 cattle and 1S1 sheep a year ago. Receipts of hogs were larger than they have been. In addition there was a falling off in the demand from outside sources and unfavorable reports were rceeived from other markets. Local packers forced a general reduction of 10 cents some sales showing more and others less than the general decline. The trading was quiet and the finish weak. Most of the hogs sold within a range of $8.43 and $8.60 and the top was $8.70. Receipts of cattle were larger than they have been for several days, and in some departments the market was not quite as satisfactory to sellers as yesterday's, particularly as regards steers, but rrices were steady. Bulls wore strong and calves strong to h!gher, one small lot selling at $10.50 which is probably the highest since 1SS2. While there was a slight increase in the marketing of sheep and lambs, the supply was no larger than the trade required and the usual good clearance was made early at prices that compared favorably with yesterday. Lambs sold for $S.OO down, and sheep for $4.75 down. CLAIMS LARGER SUM Mrs. Iona Marshall, wife of Lewis H. Marshall, who was killed in the Collinsvile, Ohio, catastrophe and who has compromised her claim for damages as a result of her husband's death, stated today that 6he received between $3.S00 and $4,000 damages, instead of $2,500 as announced yesterday. It is doubtful, if ever before in the history of the city, there were as many watch parties arranged for as this. The New Year's eve dance tonight at the Odd Fellows' hall will take the place of many a watch party. Several of the churches, or organizations within the churches, have arranged watch parties. A French writer says thatnotwith standing the fact of their simplicity the songs of birds cannot be imitated with musical instruments because of the Impossibility of reproducing their peculiar timbre. The notes of birds, while corresponding with our musical scale, also include vibrations occupying the intervals between our notes. The duration of birds' songs is usually very short, two or three seconds for thrushes and chaffinches, four or fire seconds for blackbirds, bat from two to five minutes for the lark.

THE POLICE ARE MYSTIFIED
ONLY FOUR PEOPLE KNEW THE COMBINATION TO THE SAFETHIEF FOR UNKNOWN REASON LEFT TEN DOLLARS. The police are greatly mystified over the robbery of $50.50 from the safe in the office of the Independent Ice and Fuel company at North Sixteenth and F streets last nighu The combination of the safe was worked and it is said that the act must have been committed by some one entirely familiar with the surroundings. The loss was discovered this morning when John McKhaan an employe of the company, who answers telephone rails and attends to the barn, opened up the office. McKhaan opened the safe for the purpose of making change for an early customer when he discovered that the money had been taken. A peculiar Incident in connection with the affair Is the fart that the thief did not take all of the money, leaving about $10 in change. A quantity of bills to the amount or $27 was pilfered and the balance of the stolen money was In silver. Statement of Johnson. B. B. Johnson, president of the company, stated this afternoon that access to the building could be gained easily enough but he was at a loss to understand how the safe was opened. He stated that only two other persons besides himself and McKhaan. who Is a trusted employe, knew the combination of the safe. McKhaan stated that when he closed the office last evening, about 7 o'clock, for the purpose of making doubly sure that the safe was locked, he returned and again tried the door, turning the knob around several times. He Is positive that the vault was locked. None of the papers in the safe were disturbed. The police have absolutely no clue to work on and the case is the most puzzling that has ever come to the notice of the local authorities, it Is said.
