(Palladium Special)
Cambridge City, Ind., Dec. 9. With
both legs frozen to the knee and suffering intensely from the extreme cold
Herbert Crawford, aged about
years, was found lying under Hazel-
rigg's grain house this morning by
Thomas Barry.
Crawford is a farm hand and bis
home is near Bentonville, Ind. He participated freely in the use of intox
icants at Cambridge yesterday and
last night the man became gloriously
drunk. He was in a drunken stupor when found this morning. The man was brought to Richmond and taken
to the Reid Memorial hospital, where
it was found necessary to amputate
both, of his less at the knee in order
to save his life. Has Hands Frozen.
Another case of severe exposure was that of William Toms, an old resident
of this place, in feeble condition. He
wandered up the Big Four railroad tracks last evening. He was missed
early and a searching party was organized. Toms was found in a very bad condition near the railroad tracks. Both of his hands were frozen and had not the man been found just when he was, would probably have died 'from exposure. He is 55 years of age.
AFFIDAVITS' ARE SHOWN
A PILOT AND AN INSURANCE BROKER ARE ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN PROMISED $4,000 FOR DOING THIS WORK. '
(American News Service) New York, Dec. 9. The Times prints today sworn affidavits, signed by August W. Loose, a pilot and navigator, and George H Dunkle, an insurance broker, that Dr. Frederick A. Cook, the explorer, promised them four thousand dollars for their aid in preparing the polar records of his journey to the North Pole, which ar!
now in the hands of the University of Copenhagen.
The times is a firm supporter of
Peary in the North Pole controversy. The signers of the affidavits freely acknowledge that their motive in making these affidavits is the alleged failure to pay them the full sums said to have been promised.
The Times adds that it is impossible
as yet to say tnat tne observations, calculated by Captain loose, and whioh
he alleges he supplied to Dr. Cook, are
those actually delivered to the university of Copenhagen.

POOR DEMANDS. Big Rush Made on Trustee and the Charities Today. Last night the thermometer did not go above lO above zero, and this morning between and 7 o'clock, was but 2 above, according to the observations obtained at the pumping station, east of the city. Several farmers stated it was below zero early this morning. The demands for fuel at Township Trustee James Haworth's office this morning, were particularly heavy and already a large hole has been eaten in that car load which the township purchased, to be given out to its poor. Food, likewise, was in demand and several orders were placed by charitable associations with groceries and meat markets to supply the needy. Mrs. Candler, probation officer, stated that clothing was in demand and that a large amount of second hand clothing, some fairly good, the rest in a dilapidated condition, was apportioned out. Stock Is Suffering. In the country districts, reports were received that the stock was suffering to some extent. So far as known, no stock was frozen to death. Just how serious the damage will be in the outlying districts remains to be determined after the inevitable thaw. Wheat will probably suffer, as the roots have been exposed in many fields by the ground freezing and
tearing the roots from the plant. Or
chards will also suffer as a result of
the limbs being coated with ice. This damage will not be serious. The plumbers in this city today were
very busy, repairing exposed water
pipes, which were frozen and bursted.
Plumbers say that there have been more complaints for this reason than
in several years. Coal men are per
haps the only ones appreciating the cold wave. Tl ice men are also expectant of a chance to harvest a large amount of natural ice before the cold
wave breaks. Another cold day will be required before the ice men can get busy, according to a locallealer. Skating, on the river and ponds is exceptionally good and many are enjoying this sport. The cold has effected the steam and
electric railroads and very few trains or cars arrived on scheduled time. The trains from the north are delayed because of snow drifts, but those from the east, south and west, seem to be delayed because the cold is effecting the machinery, according to the explanation made by railroaders.

On cross examination, by Mr. Johnson, Owens testified that he had twice gone to see Freeman about a letter which was mailed to Mrs. Owens, but which the plaintiff received.
