"You would seem to be doing a good business," said the meter reader to the druggist. "It's unusually good tonight." replied the cheerful druggist "I've had seTen patrons who asked to see the city directory, five who used the telephone, eleven who bought postage stamps and one who wanted me to remove bis porous plaster. An eminent Scotch clergyman happened to dine with some learned lawyers of the Edinburgh bar. Be appropriated to himself a large dish of cress, upon which he fed voraciously. Erskine. wishing to admonish him for his discourtesy to the other diners, remarked: "Doctor, you remind me of Nebuchadnezzar in his degradation." "Aye, do 1 mind ye o Nebuchadnezzar? Doubtless because 1 am eating among the brutes," answered the Scotch worthy.

He spoke of the fact that these animals usually live to be of great age and to possess characteristics which man should attempt to emulate. His conclusion was that man is divinely sent and he should begin early in life to accomplish the purposes for which he was sent. The invocation was delivered by Rev. T. J. EARLY SHOPPING URGED
PEOPLE OF THE CITY ARE URGED TO PREPARE CHRISTMAS BASKETS FOR THE POOR AND THE NEEDY OF RICHMOND. Although no resolution was adopted favoring the closing of the business of this city on December 21. 22 and 23. in order to give the clerks a chance to obtain a breathing spell, yet the Min isterial association, at its meeting this morning, accepted a motion that the members of the association should da all in their power to encourage and urge that the stores close on the even ings of the above dates. The question was thoroughly dls cussed and finally accepted that It was a minister's duty to eucourage the clos ing of the stores from the humanitari an standpoint. The ministers urged that the shopping be done In the morn ing in as many Instances as possible. It is the opinion of this association that the women should be the ones o make the burdens of the clerks lighter by shopping earlier and giving the men. who have to work in the daytime a chance to do their shopping in the evening. The question of people giving Christ. mas baskets to the poor was taken no and It was decided to urge that such action be taken by every one who could afford to do so. It was the opinion of some of the ministers that If the rich and those of moderate cir cumstances, gave to the poor, they would see the great need for the Asso ciated Charities, which organisation Is now in a floundering condition, while an effort is being made to collect $2,000. The solicitors have secured but $1,XM, after weeks of work. Regarding an editorial that appeared in the Palladium Sunday, the Rev. Mr. Traum said today: "I should like to record the conviction that no more timely editorial ha appeared in the columns of the Palladium than that of Sunday morning's issue, I made particular mention of It in my sermon of last night, and did so on the ground that our men of affairs must learn the great truth that humanity Is too priceless to be sacrificed on the altar of business. Men and women are the stuff out of which are made the cltixens of our land and of the kingdom of heaven. It Is the crying shame of our age that the milliners have robbed us of the meaning of Easter and our merchants are taking away from us our Garlstmas. Annually we are exb rted to celebrate a "sane Fourth of July." I therefore thank the writer of the above mentioned editorial for his plea for a sane Christmas." AGED MAtl VERY ILL Martin L. Crocker, age 87, who suffered a stroke of paralysis several weeks ago. Is reported to be no better. His condition for the past week has been such that the physicians hold but little bones for his recovery, although he has been able to sit up.
