FREIGHT REING REFUSED

(American News Service) Minneapolis, Dec. 1. Freight traffic practically suspended, passenger trains creeping cautiously through the railroad yards and with railroad officials, train dispatchers and other employes throwing switches, is the situation today resulting from a strike of

two thousand switchmen on the several roads to the Northwest. Freight shipments are being refused at many stations. The grain movement will be seriously hampered and it is estimated the strike will throw ten thousand other employes idle in a short time. The switchmen demanded six cents an hour increase.

A POLICE COURT TRAGEDY

Emmett Stanley arraigned on a charge of assault and battery in the police court this afternoon on Lon Swisher, a street car motorman, was found not guilty, although he cut Swisher with a pen knife in two places on the face and cut his coat, hat and vest several times. It was shown that Stanley called

at the home of his divorced wife, who lives at 23 North Ninth street, and that Swisher was there at the time. This caused Stanley to become pro

fane, but he went away peacefully. Then Swisher called to him. He said that Swisher struck at him with a

broom stick and broke it over his arm. The next and final round was Stan

ley;! bat the police interfered.
