In his homecoming address at Washington Samuel Gompers, referring to the jail sentence resting against him on a charge of cou tempt of court in the Buck's Stove and Range company case, said that Justice Wright bad decided the contempt case against him because be was prejudiced against men that work. "There is no man to whom X will bend the knee; there is no man to whom I will look up unless be possesses the attributes of honesty and fair dealing." After bis reference to the contempt proceedings Mr. Gompers expressed bis respect for Judges in general. He said: "I have confidence In their Integrity, no matter what their decisions may be. But I know that they are men, human beings, who are Just as likely to err as any other men on earth. 1 have no hesitancy in saying that not only did Justice Wright err. but that he was prejudiced against the men of labor. "I do not want to be a hero or nearly a hero. I have no desire to be bombastic or defiant, but I say advisedly and with a knowledge of the full responsibility that attaches to my words that I believe that no imposition of a lighter sentence will alter the case one Jot. Either we have free speech and a free press in this country or we have not. The imposition of a fine of one cent or the Imposition of imprisonment for one hour for the utterance of conscientious belief and the faith that is within as is a denial of free speech and of a free press. "I simply content myself with the plain statement that the constitution guarantees free speech and a free press and that that guarantee was placed in the constitution for a purpose. It was not necessary to place that guarantee in the constitution that we might sound the praises of the powers that be. No man wants a constitutional guarantee in Russia to sing the praises of the czar. Wo do not need a guarantee to say things that please any authority, whether that authority be the president of toe United States or the king of another country. The guarantee was pat there that men might say things that displease and might do so with perfect safety. The demands for reforms coming from the people are generally distasteful at the time to the governmental power. Again referring directly to the power of injunction. Mr. Gompers denied the right of any court to enjoin him in advance from expressing bis views, although be realised that be might be tried for what be bad said after be had spoken. If the court of appeals should decide against him be declared that the fight for free speech must go on until that right was achieved. "We cannot stop if we want," be aid, and we do not want to stop. We have gone too far in the march of human progress to be driven back Into slaverr." In the course of a recent address at Atlantic City John Mitchell, former president of the United Mine Workers of America, declared there is no more room at the top. "The schoolteacher's advice to her pupils and the mother's command to ber son to climb to the top," said Mr. Mitchell, "is a futile echo of the past, for there la no more room at the top. I do not mean that men should not take advantage of every opportunity for self advancement, but I do Insist that no man has a right to go op by treading upon the bodies of bis fellow men." Mr. Mitchell said the great mass of worklngmen would always remain the mass they are today. He denied that labor unionism bad contributed to this result by leveling men to a common standard in respect to compensation. "In establishing a minimum wage organized labor has not deprived the employer of the privilege of specially recognizing exceptional efficiency where be finds it" A Church For Laboring Men. Hope chapel, on the lower east side of New York city, owned by the Fourth Avenue Presbyterian church, after a series of troubles. Including the sudden dismissal of its minister In charge by the mother church, has been turned ever to the board of borne missions of tbe Presbyterian church for a term of five years at an annual cost of $5,000. Tbe purpose is to build up a church for laboring men ana tneir families, with services in several foreign languages. Tbe Rev. Charles Btelsle. superintendent of the labor department of the board, is making tbe plans. He was a Sunday school pupil at the J chapel years ago ana more recently the pastor. Labor Leader's Salary Raised. The salary of William D. Mabon of the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railroad Employees has been doubled by tbe executive committee on account of his successful efforts to secure better conditions for tbe street railroad men in Chicago without a strike. He will now receive $5,000 a. .year. Among the curiosities of tree life is the sofar, or whistling tree, of Nubia. When the winds,, blow over this tree it gives out flutelike sounds, playing away to the wilderness for hours at a time strange, weird melodies. It is the spirit of the dead singing among the branches, tbe natives say, but the scientific white man says that the sounds are due to a myriad of small holes which an insect bores in the spines of the branches. The weeping tree of the Canary islands is another arboreal freak. This tree in the dry est weather will rain down showers from its leaves, and the natives gather up the water from, the . pool formed at the foot of the trunk and find it pure and fresh. Tbe tree exudes the water from Innumerable pores at the base of the leaves. London Globe. Tnere'e nathtaar like
