Earlham And Other Colleges of This State Given Praise By Wiley
Washington, Nov. 18. Dr. H. W. Wiley, chief of the federal bureau of chemistry, in an address before the Indiana Society of Washington, paid
a high tribute to the smaller colleger
of Indiana, He mentioned Wabash, Hanover, Karl bam and Franklin as types of the schools he referred to, although they are not all small colleges. He expressed the view that much of the culture in Indiana is due to the influence of these smaller institutions of learning. Dr. Wiley is a graduate

of Hanover. After leaving Hanover he went to Harvard and was also graduated there. "I am frequently asked the name of the college from which I came," said he. "I always answer, Hanover. It would be a great misfortune," Dr. Wiley said,"""if these smaller colleges should ever go out of existence. "After giving the subject a good deal of thought," said he, "I,, am convinced that these smaller institutions of learning are doing a great deal more for society, and for our country in a general way, than are the great universities. They are bringing education to the people, and that Is what we need." Dr. Wiley further expressed the opinion that one dollar will buy more education at one of tfcese smaller colleges in Indiana tban twenty-five buys at Harvard. But most important of all, he said, is the moral training which a young men gets at a smaller institution. Dr. Wiley said many other flattering things about his native state. He related that he was born in a log cabin in Jc-fferson county and he told his audience confidentially that sentiment had recently led him to buy
a farm simply because there is a log cabin on it.

She replied that she did not know, but she did know that it had the effect of making the untied spoony. If any one asks you what effect rub-a-lac has upon a tub of dirty clothes, tell them a very noticeable one. Also that rufc-a-lac is cheap and can be bought at any store. Try it and be convinced.

graduate in the study of the railroad laws of the state, and authorized by a
real college to tackle and operate safe'
ly any sort of a motor car, is one of the
things that will soon be available in Indiana. The Indiana Automobile college is to be started in Indianapolis. The concern was incorporated Tuesday morning by Charles S. Gant, Jessie G. Gant, Ozora Belle Gant. all of Greenfield, Ind., Charles C Pettljohn of Southport, Ind., and Samuel Click and Nellie R. Glick of Indianapolis. The capital stock was placed at $5,000. Charles S. Gant. Ozora B. Gant and Samuel Glick are the directors. They are empowered to equip the college with shops, machinery, laboratory and other equipment, and to hire instructors and fix salaries. The purpose of the new idea college is to instruct, by correspondence, or by personal attendance, persons who wish to acquire knowledge of the science of the construction and the use of automobiles. Lessons will be given in driving, repairing, assembling, lathe and shop work, drafting, building and manufacture. There will be a course in laws governing autos and their speeding. Diplomas will be issued to those completing the courses. The new idea college is expected to meet in part the abnormal demand now existing for auto workers, mechanicians and experts in the handling and making of motor cars.
city as too high and work done by city at much less cost. 14. Asphalt trust foiled by changing to brick and creosote block. 15. Ward politics eliminated in let
ting contracts. 16. Red light District eliminated What Reform Cannot Do. All of these things can point to only one thing the power of the people and the desire of council to do their bidding. Council did away with the gambling devices in cigar stores. The cigar men tried to bluff council by getting a petition for their Recall. The movement fell flat The citizens of Moines the liberal element itself, would not be a party to the removal of men who were enforcing the law which they had given their oath to do. So it Is the real power of the people working through the channels of the Des Moines Plan which the results show. That is the difference between the Des Moines Plan and "reform." The results of the latter are at best only temporary. Reform cannot do what the Des Moines Plan has done. It has giTen the people the power.
