President Tom Lewis of the United Mine Work ers' Union has wired to the headquarters of the union to forward five thousand dollars to Cherry, Ills., for relief work under the supervision of three union men from headquarters. COMPLAINT IS MADE An anonymous complaint was made about the unsanitary condition of one of the parochial schools of the city, to Secretary of the State Board of Health. Dr. J. N. Hurty, and this afternoon. Sanitary Inspector Gausepohl Is mak ing an inspection of these institutions at the direction of J. E. King, county health officer. The letter which Dr. Hurty receive-! was turned over to Dr. King for his investigation. He in turn gave the letter to Dr. Charles Bond, city health of ficer. but as Dr. Bond did not care tc act, Df. CASE OF STATE INTEREST AND THE PROSECUTION IS BEING ASSISTED BY AN ATTORNEY REPRESENTING THE INDIANA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION. The trial of Mrs. Lida Hazlitt, charged w-ith practicing medicine without 1 license, commenced this morning in "ae circuit court before the petit jury. The morning was spent in preliminary routine. The case is brought at the instigitioc of the Indiana Medical association, acting in conjunction with the Wayne County Medical society. The specific case in which the state will attempt to prove that the defendant practiced medicine without a license, is that of Miss Lillian Mays, a New Castle young girl, who died at Mrs. Hazlitfs sanitarium, West Fifth street. May 20, 1909, from pulmonary tuberculosis. It required an hour and a half for the selection of a jury, the regular jurors impanelled for the October terra of court, cot suiting either side In several instances. Among the regular jurors dismissed were William Jones, Amos Henning and Allen Coggshall by the state and John K. Eliason. B. F. Parsons and William Harris by the defense. Various good reasons were given why these six men could not serve. Members of Jury. The jury as finally sworn In includes Benton Wagoner, Frank Clark. Joha R. Thornburg, George Weidner, Cicero Oler, Ora Hinshaw, Nathan Davis, Daniel Tice, Percy Sanford, James B. Howes, Scott LIchty and Samuel Snyder. The state is represented by Prosecuting Attorney Charles Ladd: his assistant, R. K. Shiveley and James L. Gavin of Indianapolis, special counsel for the State Medical society. Dr. William T. Gott of Marion, secretary of the state society and Dr. A. L. Bramkamp, secretary of the Wayne County Medical society are also interested. The defendant has retained Bobbins and Robbing and William A. He testified that he had received from Mrs. Hazlitt treatment for rheumatism both at his home in New Cae and here. He said that no medicin was administered, but that the treatment consisted c? rubbing. He also said that he paid Mrs. Hazlitt about $30 a wee" for the treatment of his daughter, while in her sanitarium. Mrs. Olga Mays, the girl's mother, was the next witness. Her testimony was substantially the same as Mr. Mays's. TREASURER IS SUED Wife of Oscar Hadley, State Official, Wants to Secure a Divorce. SERIOUS CHARGES MADE (American News Service) Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 15. Oscar Hadley, treasurer of the state, was sued today at Danville by his wife for limited divorce. Mrs. Hadley alleges he deserted her last December and has not supported her since. She also alleges that he was cruel to her all through her married life and continually found fault with her personal appearance and dress and ways she did her housework. Resolved. That the laboring people should organize into a separate political party," is the subject of the annual debate of Earlham College, which will be held with Albion College, at Albion. Mich. The debate will be held some time next March. The question and college for debat were decided at the college Saturday evening by Professor E. P. Trueblood and several members of the last year's debating team. Two propositions werf considered. One was a debate with Indiana university in this rity and the other a debate with Albion at that college. The team will consist of three members each, and the college prima, ries will be held the first of the wintei term. The Earlham debating team should have no trouble defeating the Albion aggregation. All but one member of the last year's team is attending col lege and. although they announced at the opening of the term, they would not enter the debate this year. th have reconsidered the matter and it If now probable that all five will con test for places. If Levi T. Pennington enters, he will probably be the captain of the team and Lester Haworth and V. D. Nicholson have the best chances for the other two places. HE SPEAKS TONIGHT Senator Beveridge Will Deliver an Address at Masonic Temple. ALSO TALKS AT COLLEGE United States S nator Albert J. Beveridge, arrived this afternoon at 3:03 o'clock from Indianapolis and was met by the reception committee of the Commercial club at the depot. He was escorted to Earlham college where arrangements had been made for his addressing the students. This evening he will speak in the banquet hall of the Masonic temple to business and professional men of the city on the subject. "Watchfulness and Thoroughness in Legislation. This meeting will be held under the auspices of the Commercial Club. About two hundred invitations have been issued and all professional and business men of the city are invited to attend whether they possess tickets or not.
