By reason of the Insistence of many Investors that their bonds be of "first" mortgage it may be said that the importance of the word "erst" is dependent upon the circumstances, says Moody's Magazine. A bond may be first in fact, it may be so only in a relative sense In that it indicates the order in which the bond was put out by the issuing company or the use of the term "first" in the name of a bond, undesirable and loose though it be in such instances, may be upon the slight ground that the mortgage is indeed first on some part of the property, while on other parts It may have but a third or fourth claim. It is therefore obvious that the mere presence of this term in a title does not necessarily make the bond an absolutely prior lien. It has been estimated that 95 per cent in number and 95 per cent in value of steam railroad "firsts" are first Hens in name only. Superstitious Remedies. For whooping cough a cooked dormouse is good, in the eighteenth century this remedy . was employed in Scotland. Here is another medicament for tbe same complaint: "Watercress Is a very good thing, sir. with a little bit of that brown sugar what you uses to pnt on to bacon and some honey mixed with It. And 111 tell you what's a good thing for croup but a riesty bacon fat fried down and afore it resolves add some pepper and vinegar. It opens the pipes of the lungs, d'ye see." And if yen are adventurous you may try this for "phlegm on to the chest:" Catch a "dear little dotty frog" and tie a bit of string to one of its back legs. Then you "keep on letting it go down your throat aod pulling it up again." The narrator of this added to T. W, Thompson, who sets down these stories "It's tbe truth, young fellow, and " it cleared the phlegm out of bis throat bootifuL but we wouldn't do such a thing as that." London Chronicle.

The girls bad seen a picture of the life saving fire corps that had been organized by the young ladles of an English town and decided to form a similar brigade. The drill consisted in getting around a large blanket and holding it to catch unfortunates who should jump from the second or third stories of burning dwellings. But the . fair, njembers pf the corps, after learning how to bold the blanket, wanted some real practice. After much THX BBAVK TOCNO MAN IS STILL CONFUTED TO BIS BOOK. persuasion a young man. deeply enamored of one of the members, was prevailed upon to fall into the blanket from the top of a barn. The life savers gathered one after noon, attired in becoming uniforms, -and twelve gathered around the blan- j ket and took a firm grip. Then the accommodating young man climbed up on the roof of the building, made ready and jumped. Each girl was gaz ing upward, and at the terrible sight of a man falling tbrdugb the air they were all so shocked that without thinking twenty-four hands went up to as ! many eyes to shut out the view. i The brave young man is still con-' fined to his room. No Chance to Learn. A speaker at a Newport banquet, touching upon good manners, said: "Tbe Hottentot thinks his manners are the best, tbe Frenchman thinks his are. tbe cowboy thinks bis are, even the sailor but listen. "I once attended a reception on a man-of-war. A distinguished statesman visiting the man-of-war dispensed with tbe usual formal salute. 1 heard a sailor near me say: " 'Who's that blubber what dont tip his sky piece to the skipper T "'Choke your luff retorted another sailor. "That's Senator Dash, the famous political leader.' " 'Well.' growled the first sailor. why ain't he got manners enough to salute the quarterdeck? "'Mannersr. a third sailor chipped in. 'What does be know about manners? I don't suppose be was erer out of sight of land in his life. " Happy Persons. A happy man or woman Is a better thing to find than a five pound note. He or she is a radiating focus of good will, and their entrance into a room is as though another candle had been lighted. We need not care whether they could prove the forty-seventh proposition. They do a better thing than that they practically demonstrate the great theorem of the livableness of life. Robert Louis Stevenson. Single he passes to another world. Single he eats the fruit of evil deeds. Single, the fruit of good, end when he leaves His body like a log or heap of clay Upon tbe ground his kinsmen walk away. Virtue alone stays by him at the tomb And bears him through tbe dreary, trackless gloom. Code of Menu. His Orders. A Scottish parish minister was going from home and procured the clergyman of a neighboring parish to officiate on Sunday. Tbe parish minister's servant, who was also beadle, was sent over to the station to drive the visiting reverend gentleman to the manse. When tbe train arrived tbe beadle asked the visitor to be good enough to wait awhile, as he bad some errands to do before going borne. It was two hours before be returned. The minister was furious and threatened to report tbe beadle to his master. "Weel. sir. ye can dae that if ye like." said tbe beadle, "but he tell't me himself to wait till it was dark afore I drove ye ower.- for if tbe folk o the village saw wba was to preach naebodr wad turn oot the mom." The Boy Collector. One day tbe front door bell of a certain Toronto bouse rang, and the mistress of tbe home, answering the summons, found on the threshold a diminutive Irish lad. "Well," she queried, "what Is Itr Tr com for tbe money," was tbe laconic but cryptic response. The lady bad no idea what tbe boy meant, but finally the latter made it clear that be had come to collect a small sum owing on a parcel which bad been delivered to a visitor In the bouse. Tbe lady paid the money and then suggested that the be given a receipt. "Receipt! What's that?" asked tbe small but determined collector. Tbe lady explained that as they were each acting the part of agents in the transaction It would be advisable for him to give her something In tbe shape of a Toucher. Well, sunshine costs leas, yet it is finer pigment. And so of cheerfulness or a good temperthe more it is spent tbe more of it remains. A Sassy Corpse. It waa in a midnight interview with an importunate newspaper reporter that Cbauncey Depew first told bis famous story of tbe sassy corpse, which be applied to tbe reporter's own case. "A spiritualist bad died. said be. "and his friends came to a clergyman and asked him to preach a funeral sermon, even though that waa in conflict with their tenets. And he did so. as best be could. And when be got through tbe widow arose, announced that she bad a communication from tbe deceased and proceeded to tear tbe clergyman, his sermon and bis sentiments to ribbons. " 'I'm mighty sorry,' said tbe spiritualist leader. 'I'm not. said the clergyman. I've preached many a funeral sermon, but this is tbe first time 1 was ever by the comse.' Boomerang Kinks. There are a good many -kinks' to be learned to throw tbe boomerang skillfully. One is slwsys to throw against the wind if yon want it to come back to you. It is a miniature aeroplane for it literally sails against the wind and is borne upward and onward by the .breeze. If tbe player wants to make a long distance straightaway record be can throw with tbe wind, but be must take care to select a boomerang which is heavy eo heavy that it will not be too much affected by tbe air currents. By pointing tbe boomerang at a certain angle be can make it soar aloft in circles like a bawk until it may be as high as 100 feet above tbe earth. As in golf playing. It is not so much mere strength that makes a long thrower, but the skill in aiming, tbe direction and in boomerang throwing tbe way in which advantage may be taken of tbe air! currents. St Nicholas.
