(American News Service) Pittsburg, Nov. 2. Mrs. William Marlow, a coal miner's wife, and four of her children, ranging in age from a baby to twelve year old boy, perished in a fire which destroyed their home in Penn township at six o'clock this morning. The fire Mas caused by an eighteen-year-old boy upsetting the kitchen lamp, which caused an explosion. The mother succeeded in cardying one child to safety in the yard, but lost her life in attempting to rescue the others. The charred body of th mother was found clasping her babe in her arms. Old Time Quackery. The eighteenth century was the golden harvest time of the quack, against whom some of the fiercest shafts of Hogarth's satire were directed. The quack loved to surrouud himself with an atmosphere of mystery, which was calculated to impose upon the credulity of his victims. His room was bedecked with skulls and skeletons. A brisk trade in quackery was carried on by women. J. C. Wright in his book. "The Good Old Times." records the fact that in the year ITS) "a Mrs. Joanna Stephens was awarded 5.000 by the English government "for- a proper discovery made by ber for the cure of the stone. This 'proper discovery,' " adds Mr. Wright, "consisted of a powder, a decoction and pills, the last named being formed from calcined snails, with carrot seeds, hips and I haws, the compound being burnt to blackness and then mixed with soap and honey." A Ludicrous Experiment. Hoi roes was one of the many eminent men who have attempted to solve the riddle of the universe. In his case the result was ludicrous. From the sublime thoughts that came to him while tinder the Influence of chloro1 form he thought he might arrive at some solution. Placing himself in his armchair, with pen. ink and paper at hand, he inhaled the anaesthetic. As drowsiness stole over him the nature ? of things seemed revealed. By a rigorous effort he seized his pen and wrote he knew not what, for before be bad finished be fell back unconscious. When be recovered he turned ! with trembling anxiety to the sheet of . paper, on which, written in scrawling ; characters, but quite legible, he found the awful revelation. "A strong smell of turpentine pervades the whole! London News. BAND TO REHEARSE. The Y. M. C A. band will have it first rehearsal this evening. George L. Goodwin, secretary of the association, says the band will not parade in case the candidate favored by the assedation wins.

The position which sportsman, who
desire to shoot rabbits before th open season, November 10. hold is a pe culiar one. Owing to the fact that there is a strong doubt as to whether rabbits are game and also that there is no reference to rabbits in the statue books, thus strengthening the claims of those who contend these animals are not game, it is probable that no prosecution would be made, should anyone shoot rabbits. However, the rub comes in an entirely unexpected source as shown by the Indiana statue 252S. revised statue of 190S. and which Proeecutinc Attorney Charles Ladd requested be published. The law is as follows: It shall be unlawful to hunt any kind of game except wild duck and other water fowl, at any time from October first of any year to November tenth of the same year. Any one guilty of violating any of the provisions of this section shall, on conviction, be fined not less than five dollars nor more than fifty dollars for each offense and every day this section violated shall constitute a separata and distinct offense.
