(American News Service) Chicago, Oct. 7. An attempt was made at an early hour to blow up the plant of the South Chicago People's Gaslight and Coke company by three men. They entered the engine-room, which is still uncompleted, overpowered, bound and gagged Engineer John Sullivan and after removing him outside, exploded a quantity of explosive under the engine. The engine was destroyed but the force was not sufficient to damage the huge gasometers less than 100 yards away.

IN AMATEUR COMPETITION SEVERAL AWARDS WERE MADEEXHIBIT PROVES MOST ATTRACTIVE ONE.
Flowers in perfect forms and in the most beautiful designs were on exhibit at the Flower Show of the Fall Festival yesterday. A goodly number of the thousands of visitors who were in Richmond attended the flower exhibit
and pronounced it the better of the two annual exhibits in this city. The committee to award prizes announced its decision early and the majority of visitors yesterday saw the completed show. The following are the prizes awarded and the exhibitors: In the class of fifty carnations, the Charles Knopf Floral company won four firsts in the enchantress, crimson, scarlet and white carnations. G. R, Gause won one first in the light pink carnation and one second in the white carnation. Knopf Continues Success. In the class of twenty-five carnations the Charles Knopf Floral company again carried away the majority of prizes. That company secured first in the dark pank, crimson and scarlet carnations. The Fred H. Lemon company secured one first in the white carnation. B. H. Grave also secured a first. The rose display again gave honors to the Charles Knopf Floral company, that company winning first in the pink rose and white rose display. The Fred H. Lemon company won first and
