THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AJTD SUN-TELEGBA3I, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1909.

York, Pa., Oct. 6. St. John's Boy club, founded a little more than a year ago by St. John's Episcopal church, of this city, Is probably unique. Its success in the comparaticely brief period of its existence has been ample to prove the wisdom of its general plan. The first purpose of the club, which was made possible through the generosity of A. B. Farquhar, a York manufacturer, in fitting out a building on the church property to reach the boys of the street beyond the influence of the street beyond the influence of Youngv Men's Christian associations and other organizations which might provide entertainment to attract them from evil associations. Permission for the Juvenile members to smoke was a thing over which the Rev. Dr. A R. Taylor and other promoters of the club hesitated not a little; but it was determined that an narrowness here might defeat the entire purpose. To make the club more attractive the self-governing principle was establsihed, almost absolute, and this question of smoking being left to the youths, they themselves decided to limit to boys of eighteen years or TOore, in the evening only. On cards and on the establishment of a couple of fine pool tables the rector and his associates had no doubts. As It was from these diversions at cigar tores and saloons that the youths were to be attracted, it was quickly ' determined to give them sway in the clear atmosphere of the club. Dues of two cents a week per member had been fixed and the opportunity to enjoy their favorite games so cheaply was a big factor in bringing in many promising recruits. Once enrolled the good literature and fine gymnasium speedily made them aware that there were other amusements than those they had known. The club with Its membership limit of li"M has this roster filled and a good sized list in waiting. There are two classes of boys the employed and the unemployed. The former are the ones most sought and occupy the club house; from seven to ten o'clock each evening. The latter, most of them younger boys, have the afternoons. On its lower floor the club house ha? a spacious reading room, a game room and a compartment with lockers and shower baths. On the upper floor Is the well equipped gymnasium, which has turned out several crack athletic teams. The most prominent feature of decoration in the reading room is a handsome picture of Sir Galahad, place! there as an inspiration to the boys. In this room there is a library of suffi

cient size to whet the interest of the members for more volumes, which the j can obtain from St. John's or the city's public libraries. The massive mission table In the room was made by one of the boys. The permanent officers of the club are Dr. Taylor, Miss Eleanor A. BonBam and William V. Harner. The latter has direct charge of the club house.

Passing through the ranks of the Spanish army I met in the regVnent Del Rey the duke of Saragossa and the Marquis de Vallecerrato. The latter traveled out with me from England coming straight from Cambridge to Eerve as a volunteer. Both these nolemen Berve in the ranks as common loldiers, loading the same life, eating he same food and carrying the same leavy burdens as their comrades. Correspondence London Telegraph.

Poultry and Dogs Furnish the Big Crowds Considerable Amusement.

BOTH DISPLAYS BIG ONES

More than 400 entries, and approximately 50 entries have been made, respectively, in the poultry and dog displays. This exhibit Is shown at the South A and Sixth street market house. All the available space in the building has practically been taken by the poultry display, and it has been necessary to arrange tiers of coups. The varieties exhibited include almost every kind known. The birds are not common varieties for eating purposes, for if one would be killed the owner would be the loser to the extent of from $5 to $100. The exhibit of dogs is not large, due principally to the fact that the dogs are in very bad shape at the present time and owners are not particular about showing their animals. However, those on exhibit are the kings and queens of their respective breeds, a few being valued upwards to (500 and more.
