One of the Best Features of The Festival Will Be Swine Show. SAM DUN LAP WORKS HARD ENERGETIC LOCAL. ' EXPERT HAS INTERESTED MANY 8WINE RAISERS TO EXHIBIT THEIR VERY BEST STOCK.

The finest display of hogs ever shown in this city will be seen at the

South Fifth and A street market square during the festival.- Samuel

Dunlap, an expert, who Is chairman of this committee, has spent several days

raisers and has .been remunerated for his efforts. Nearly every raiser of fine hogs has promised to enter an exhibit of his best anftnfris. Nearly all of the0gs will be the kings and queens f'MBB' pork, world, being registered aiJLEfcgreed stock. The different breedaeh!ch will be most prominently in evidence are the Poland Chinas, Duroc Jerseys and Chester Whites. . These three breeds are the most popular with farmers of this community and their display will no doubt attract a large crowd. Fanners will not be the only admirers of the swine. Residents of Richmond will take a great deal of interest in them, the same as last year. Prizes Are Liberal. The prizes offered are exceptionally good, considering the fact that there are no entry fees. Prizes are offered for the best boars and sows of all breeds and then there are the sweepstake prizes. The hogs display wiU be graded according to their age, hogs

over one year of age not been exhibit

ed In competition with hogs less than one year of age.

The entries for hogs should be in the hands of either Mr. Dunlap or Secrta-

ry E. H. Harris by October 1.

The attention to be given the hogs is an interesting feature. Every morning, the man in care of the hog3 is expected to clean out their pens and

put in fresh straw. Afterwards, eith

er he or the exhibitor will get out his can of lamp black for the black hogs and shine them up. Some other shin

ing material will he used for the red and white colored hogs. By ten

o'clock, when the exhibits open, the

hogs will look very respectable.

LABOR AND IMMIGRATION.

Logical to Impose Restriction on Inv :yy portation of Workmen. The trades unions are entirely logical In asking for restrictions on the impor

tation of laborers for the protected industries. If we are all to be taxed to

give high prices and profits to those in dustries It is absurd that the benefl claries shall have the further advan

tage of Imported cheap labor to com

pete with workmen already here for

whom protection Is professedly asked

This argument is now practically the only one that has any direct influence on rotes. No one any longer believes

that our industries are "Infant;" that

they cannot bold the home market

against all comers; that our varied

natural resources, with our capable

workmen, do not give our manufac

turers the better of any competitors at home and of many, even in foreign

markets. Nor do those who have mas

tered the subject oouDt tnat tne -cneap

v labor of older countries, measured oj

Its product Is more costly than onr own

at higher wages. But to a consider

able I portion of American workmen

and to the unthinking of other classes

the protective tariff is protective to la

bor, the cause of higher wages and of

the superior scale of living which un doubtedly prevails in this country

This is the unblushing pretension of

the favored employers.

Now, It Is plain that it is from this

point of view an Injustice and an out

rage to permit the importation of for

eign laborers to compete with our own. It Is also a logical cause of complaint

If immigration of competitors without

the direct action of employers Is al

Displays Each Evening at Var

AN EXPERT IS EMPLOYED

INDIANAPOLIS MAN WILL HAVE

THE ENTIRE CHARGE OF THE SPECTACULAR DISPLAYS DURING THE FESTIVAL.

By no means the least feature of the

Fall Festival will be the fire works di3play which will take place on each evening of the festival. On the first

evening the display will be held in the yard of the Warner school building on North Seventh street and Fort Wayne avenue. On the second evening the fire works, probably will be fired from

the court house yard, although this location will not be definitely decided by the committee until it consults with the expert from Indianapolis as to the advisability of selecting this site. it is feared the trees , will obstruct the view for many and if possible a better location will be sought. On the third evening the large commons on South Fifteenth and C . streets will be the scene of the festivities and is an ideal location. The grounds are ample and there is nothing to obstruct a perfect view of the fireworks. ' - Probably the most gorgeous display of fireworks ever witnessed In this city will be seen during the three days of the festival. The committee has ar

ranged for a lavish entertainment in this regard and there win be many new novelties introduced. A. person never gets tired of watching fire works shct off and the committee realizing this fact has arranged to make this feature a big one, this year. - N

Murray Theater. Theatergoers of Richmond may well be proud of the new Murray theater, which will be formally opened October 4th.

In this new play house a most complete home for vaudeville has been provided and luxurious comfort is to be had for everybody while attending the performance. The new building will be in first class condition for the opening and a select bill of vaudeville has been secured by Manager Murray for this eventIt includes as the hfeadliner one of

the biggest acts in vaudeville and one seldom seen outside of the big cities. It is the big scenic novelty entitled "The Night of the Poets," by Wm. B. MacCallum. Fifteen actors and actresses make up the company and about one-half car load of scenery. "The Night of the Poets" is one of the biggest acts in vaudeville and will

prove to be one of the best offerings ever seen in Richmond.

An attraction of more than ordinary

merit is offered in Prof. Bristol's edu

cated ponies, which perform the most

unusual and difficult feats that have ever been attempted, with exact precision and sureness. . Prof. Bristol

uses eentle and humane treatment

with his ponies, and as a consequence, they go through their performance with pleasure and without a hitch.

Brooks and Carlisle have some new

parodies in their comedy sketch enti

tled "The Umlt," which has scored

heavily wherever presented.

Henry Bobker presents several char

acter impersonations which are all cleverly done. The show individually and collectively, is one of the best that Richmond audiences have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. The finishing touches are being put on the auditorium and everything will be in tip-top shape for the opening on October 4th.
