A POOR PEACH CROP Local Grocers Fear Michigan Yield Will Be Very , Poor One. FACTORIES HOG MARKET
According to a statement made by a local grocer this , morning it will be practically impossible to secure any peaches from Michigan this year owing to the fact that the Michigan peach crop is the poorest it has been in years and the large canning factor
ies in Chicago have bought almost all
that is available in the Wolverine
state. The few peaches that do arrive in this city from Michigan will be of an inferior quality and will retail at $2.25 to $2.75 a bushel, at
least, it is said. The large luscious peaches of former years are a thing of the past now and are supplimented by a small puny variety. The great Michigan forest Tires of two years ago are alleged to have destroyed thousands of peach trees. While peaches were high last year the price did not soar above the $2.25 mark, and the fruit was of a much better quality than that of this year. The local peach crop is also a failure, it is said. The peaches seem to be afflicted with some peculiar kind of disease, which causes them to rot Instead of ripen. Local dealers state that they cannot begin to supply the demand for peaches or attempt to fill the many orders which constantly . come in. People apparently are willing to buy the delicacy at any price and are glad to get the fruit despite the quality.

HURTY MAKES STATEMENT
SAYS GENERAL SALE OF MORPHINE, COCAINE, OPIUM AND THE LIKE IS SPREADING DEATH OVER THE STATE.
Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 14. It is likely that the next legislature will be asked to pass a law that will make it impossible for any person to purchase such drugs as morphine, cocaine, opium and the like at drug store physicians, surgeons or dentists, recognip ed by the law, and then only on the presentation of a proper certificate, leaving it to the state medical board
and the state dental board to punisn
violators of the law. Dr. J. N. Hurty, secretary of the state board of health, declared that the
sale of these drugs is increasing rap
idly and that their sale is spreading
death and misery throughout the state.
In presenting his case, he will support
his claims with the results of numerous analyses made in the state laboratory of drugs purchased in drug stores throughout the state. He will also cite a number of instances of his own personal experiences with users of the
drugs. He declares that misunderstandings on the part of legislators in the past concerning the dangers which accompany the sale of the dangerous drugs has operated to defeat the passage of the desired laws, but he believes that the general plan of education of the people' has served to pre
pare them for the passage of some such laws at an early session.
He Cites One Case. "Only a short time ago I observed a
case which would have convinced me
fully, if I had not already been con
vinced before, of the need of a proper regulation of the sale of patent medi
cines containing the dangerous drugs,"
said Dr. Hurty. "A young man came
to my office carrying a small bottle containing catarrh snuff, such as is for sale in a number of drug stores in this and other cities. He told me that
his wife, a most excellent woman when
he married her two years before, had
become addicted to the use of snuff and that in the preceding twelve months her nerves had become shattered from its use and she spent almost all of her time sitting In the
kitchen at home sniffing it. For some
time, he said, he had furnished money with which to buy the snuff, but. observing its effect on her, he had refused. After that, he said, his wife
would stop at nothing, even theft, to
obtain money to buy the snuff. Contained Cocaine.
"I recognized the snuff at once as
a preparation containing a large percentage of cocaine, and told my caller
that his wife had become a confirmed
cocaine fiend. When he asked me what he could do to break- her of the
habit, I told him there was nothing, that the self murder must go on, and go on it did. The habit had become fixed, and as long as the drug was procurable there was no possible means of saving the victim, except to make it absolutely impossible for her to get
the drug.
"This is what we wish to do by lawmake it absolutely impossible for any
one, except in the most pressing need to obtain the drug, and the need must be attested by a responsible physician."
