Mr. Arthur Coleridge, speaking at the London College For Working Women, related that the poet Coleridge once journeyed from Highgate to Holboru to visit a nepbew, Sir William H. Coleridge. It was very cold weather and tbe poet had on a double breasted waistcoat which met just below his neck. It was discovered that he had got no shirt His nepbew remonstrated with him. to which the poet replied. "I'm very sorry. William, very sorry, but I've forgotten my shirt." Upon this Sir William kindly lent bis uncle a shirt "a ad." said tbe speaker. "I regret to say that very necessary garment was never returned to Its original owner." Making Every Moment Count the Se cret of Successful Life. The average woman does not appreciate the value of time. Sbe is rusbed and beated and overworked because sbe does not make the 1 bare seen women sit a whole rooming idle and then rush madly around all tbe afternoon, undoing all the good work of that rest When you sit down to chat with a friend, why don't you do some simple sewing, such as finishing seams, sewing on buttons or adjusting loose books? You wilt need to do all these things later on. and probably they will come up at the very time when you have an engagement to keep. If you are late for that engagement it puts you back for tbe entire day. Before you go to bed at night lay out your clothes for tbe next morning. See that you have clean shields In your waist, a fresh tie and collar and that your shoes are polished. And don't throw your things around. You take more time bunting for them than you would take in putting them where they belong. Don't waste your days with people that do you no good. Associate with those who stimulate you mentally or aid you to rise in tbe world. It isn't necessary to be a snob or a climber to do this. Tbe idea Is not to make companions of those inferior to you. That is a sheer waste of time tbat bad better be spent at home resting. When you work don't allow people to walk In on you and make you lose precious minutes. If you must meet them do so at certain hours. Keep tbe rest of the day to yourself in order that you may concentrate fully and In that way finish your work Quicker with less labor on your part Learn to make time work for you and you will always accomplish everything you have to do. The women who are the most rushed and flustered are not the hardest worked. They are the ones who waste the most minutes. WHY THEY PREFER ENGLAND. American Women Who Find Society There More Agreeable. The London Daily Mail has been interviewing some American women social leaders in New York as to whether they prefer to live in England and if so why so. All agree that English society is far more agreeable. "American society." said one. who stipulated that ber name be withheld. "Is a very badly ordered system. Indeed, it has ended in being no system at all. Every one in It Is trying to get ahead of every one else. Id England, on tbe other band, social order Is not questioned. This gives - those living there a most restful feeling." Still, tbis lover of English society sees "a certain restlessness" creeping into It "due." sbe explains, "not to the influx of American millionaires, but to English parvenus of enormous wealth," Another woman says tbat England is the best place for a mother with daughters to launch. "Presentation at court la such an excellent sendoff,"

Another reason for tbe liking wealthy Americans have for England is tbat most of them are brought up by English governesses, says the woI man quoted, "isngiisn governesses are tbe best in tbe world and are to be fouDd in all parts of the world." sbe said. "They are tbe greatest propagandists of English civilization." Devilfish. Devilfish weighing up to 200 pounds are sometimes caught In Japan. These fish are amphibious. They are often seen wabbling oa their tentacles like giant spiders in search of patches of sweet potatoes. Tbe natives kill them with clubs. In the water they are caught in jars lowered to tbe bottom, which tbe octopus enters, thinking them a good retreat from which to catch Its food. "I hear." said Mr. Staylate, "that a genius is perfecting an apparatus by means of which a person's face may be seen miles away." "Well." replied Miss Patience Gonne, "it will be a boon to see some faces a long way off. if they can only be kept there." NEGRO FIEND KILLED (American News Service) Rayvllle. Reid escaped and cannot be located by the police. The particulars of the affair are meager. Pulling a 32 revolver frlm his pocket Reid fired at Murray but fortunately the bullet passed through the fleshy part of the leg- just above the 'knee and the injury is not a serious one.
