Washington. July 20. The leader

ship of President Taft Is on trial to

day in the light for free bides. With th prospect before them of further exchanges between the gladiators of the

two houses, Senator Aldrich and Chair

nan Payne, the tariff conferees who were early prepared for this afternoon

session. ' Among the three stalwarts there is no weakening and the deadlock which bas developed ler giving the test to the poltical strength of the president. In view of the disagreeable difference between Aldrich and Payne over the bide schedule the morning session today was eliminated. . Expensive 8ession. The extra session pf the sixty-first congress, which met March 15, In response to the proclamation of President Taft to revise the tariff, will have cost the people of the United' States more than half a million dollars by the

time it adjourns. Two Items alone of the cost are specified in the legislative

appropriation bill as follows:

Mileage and stationery for the house

and senate amount to $201,000 for mllea: S50.500 for stationery. The

other items of expense can not be ac curately figured, but it is not an ex

aggeration to say that the cost of printing the Congressional Record, the testimony taken before the ways and

means committee, the estimates and

data ' prepared for the ways and means committee and the finance' committee, to say nothing of public and private

bills and reports, will foot up some

thing like $200,000, and the expense for extra help and messenger service

will reach close to $100,000. l Is Crucial Week.

This Is the crucial week of the tariff

bill, which has now . been in confer

ence since July 0, and the indications are that it will be at least a week be

fore the bill will be sent to the presi

dent for his approval. The republi

cans in the house and senate, who con

strue the Chicago platform as a declar

atlon for a downward revision of the

tariff say they will vote for the bill

because it is the best that quid- be ob

tained owing to the Intrenched post

tlon of the stand-patters in the senate

they admit that when the bill is sent

to the president it will be far short of the desires of Mr, Taft, but he will approve it because the bill will contain a modicum of tariff revision downward. The present fight in conference on the Payne bill Is a repetition of the tight of twelve years ago. Then as now, it was on hides. Mr. Payne at that time made a stubborn resistance to the demand of the western senators for the fifteen par cent duty on bides.

Attorney B. F. Harris relates an ex

perience which he underwent while at Crooked Lake last week. Mr. Harris

had gone to the lake for a quiet sum

mer outing and was not prepared for

what befell him. He - now believes some of the stories he has been told

and read about the power of the winds

such as cause cyclones in Kansas and other western states. j

He related the story in this way: "Crooked Lake is a body of water

near Angola, Ind., and is visited reg

ularly by a number of cottagers.

Among them is Senator Wickwire of

Steuben county. He had one of the prettiest cottages on the lake. It was built into the side of the hill, and the first story was of logs. One afternoon as the cottagers were about, I heard a

terrible roaring noise that was different from all other sounds. I looked and saw coming across the lake a funnel shaped cloud about sixty feet wide

at the lower end. It was revolving at a tremendous rate. Scooped Up Water. "It bore across the lake scooping up

immense quantities of water. It was a smoke color and seemed coming, directly towards us. In a few moments it arrived, but Teered. away striking the cottage of Senator Wickwire straight ahead.
