Prephetie Writers. ' When Sir Thomas More composed nis -Utopia" m 1514 the ideas ex pressed by hiss in it were many centuries shesd of the period in which it was written.' Every boose in each of rne ttopian cities had a large garden, the working day was limited, titer were no taverns, no lawyers, and war was regarded as a brutal method of settllna disrates. Consfderlnc that M ore's day hygiene, labor restriction. temperance and international arbitration were unknown, this is a wondernii forecast. Lord Bacon in bis essays, civil and moral, expressed opinions so far in advance of his contemporaries that be nlmsell in; bis wiU foretold that they would not be understood or appreciated until generations after his death. In practical science the most marvetooalyprophetieX writer' was the Marquis of, Worcester., who in his "Century fijlaventiona.- published in 1083. described the staam'englne. the telegraph. ? the torpedo, the range finder, the hydraulic press, portable military pontoons, matches and many other things which hare come into use within the last hundred jmnBL Jams

Origin of P.'. n Minus, MultlpJleatiee The sisSLsflitlen is derived from tne initial ez5r.r the word "plus.' In making 'the capital, letter It wsj made more and mere ' carelessly nntfl the top part ."of the if p" waa finally placed, near' the center; hence the ptas sign as we know it was gradually reached. , The sign of subtraction was derived from the word "minus." The word was first contracted in m. n. sM wits a horizontal line above to Indicate that some of the letters had been left out At last the letters were emitted alto gether, leaving only the shore line. The multiplication sign was obtained by changing the plus sign into the let ter Mx." This wss done because mul tlplkation is but a shorter form of ad dition. Division was formerly indicated by placing the dividend above a borisontal line and 'the divisor below. In order to save space in printing, the dlvl dend was placed to the left and th divisor to the right. After years 01 "evolution" the two'"dV were omit ted altogether and simple dots set in the place of each. As vrith the others, the radical sign was derived from the Initial letter of the word "radix." The sign of equality was first used in the year 1557 by a sharp mathematician, who substituted It to avoid frequently repeating the words "equal to." St James' Gazette. - Insurance Blunders.
