The Tvom"a ivhose aim is to repeal a touch of the artist in her home just at present Is interested in the old fashioned candlestick. It Is a revival as happy in ts Tray as that of the return to favor of Sheffield or pewter ware. The candle held its own against the oil lamp, bt lost its popularity when gas came in, nnd it was practically outlawed when electricity came into general use. Now, however, many women of society are using candles extensively, One society leader, in fact, has gone to the extreme of having electric fixtures removed from several rooms, relying entirely upon candles for lighting. These candles she displays In antique candlesticks of beaten brass. Tall Russian candlesticks new are seen on many library tables, and tall silver colonial sticks are on many dressing tables. New candlesticks are Shown la pottery and wrought Iron, but antiques are first In favor., The prices of old brass candlesticks bae advanced greatly In the last few weeks, and few now are to be found n the antique shops. Hi Indorsed the Orefcr "Till th Day cl Judgment." General Graut has fitly been spoken Ci U3 ";in unaffected great soldier." It may have been the blending of this large mludedneas and lack of affectation that iuvnrluhly made him ko courteously kind to jjny one who naked his assistance, bo generous In his praise of an opponent, even when that opponent w:is Cgliting lilm to the death. The following little story emphasizes all these qualities: After the fall of Port Oonelson, to prevent the nredlpss violation of property by either the army or by camp followers, protections were Issued by the United States government. To Miss C. whose six brothers were fighting in the Confederate army, such a protection was granted. It bad been signed by all the commanders of the post in turn by CuelL Rosecrans, ikuofield. Sheridan. Grainger and many others and the list was long and impressive. At last It became necessary fer General Grant's signature to be added. "When 1 entered the office." saysj Miss C. "the genera was smoking, bis feet higher than his bead, llut be seemed instantly to stand upright liefore me. and his cigar was thrown away in a moment. "l banded him ray protection, 'You have rather a formidable list of names.' he said as be took it from me. 'And I hope that yon will add yours to It and make it even more formidable. I replied. "For answer he sat down again, ready to put bis signature at the end of the parchment, when" be suddenly Stopped and looked at me, " Tor how . long do you wish this protection for your estate. Miss C.T be asked. " 'Until the day of judgment, general.' I answered boldly. "Then he smiled that sweet, quizzical smile of his that made so many people, even when they were his enemies, love him and said: 'My dear young lady, you have great confidence in your armies! But with such courage and with such a leader as General Lee I cannot wonder.' Then, with a great flourish, be added the words, TH1 the day of judgment. Ulysses S. Grant and handed it back to me." As yet tbe weight of evidence seems to favor tbe latter view, but tbe mat ter is still unsettled. It is generally thought that frost has something to o with it, but It bas not, except to hasten It. Anything which affects the vitality of the leaf tends to hasten It. for which reason an injured branch of a mnple will often show red autumn color even iq summer.
