THE RIVER SIDE PARK The proposition of the West Rich
mond Improvement Association for a
Rivertide Park is deserving of attention from the Board of Public Works and the Common Council. There are, of course, many people who will say
that we have parks already. But would
we be willing to give them up?
, There Is one thing about the park
situation which should not be over
looked and that is the fact that parks
must be acquired when they can be obtained. ' The town is constantly grow
ing. It should be unnecessary to say
that it may soon be impossible to ac
quire more land In the central part of
town. And this is the more true from
, the fact that the tendency in Richmond
it to build compactly.
We will not say that the present proposition is the best that can be ob
tained, but it is an almost self evident
fact that; the ground along the river front can not always be had for the asking. Besides that, what makes the ground appropriate for park purposes is the fact that trees are already growing in their virgin state on
the river bank.
The ground, can be acquired at this
time and further improvements can
be added from time to time when there Is enough money. The West Side ia Just as deserving 6f a park as
any other part of the city. It is grow
ing constantly in the matter of reel
dences. This makes it all the more Imperative why this section of the
town should be recognised. ...
Besides this the whole town is directly or indirectly interested in the
Riverside Park, Inasmuch as it' may
some day become part of a park sys
tem extending from the Glen down the
river.
The park system of all the larger
cities from the famous Thames Em
bankment in L6ndon to the park sys
tem of Chicago around the lake ia suf-
' ficient proof that water is the natural accompaniment of a good park. ' The city of Harrlsburg, within ! the last
few years, has entered Into the scheme
of improvement of its river front with
such great success that the city has been agreeably changed and sent on a
new plan of civic improvement. There
fore the plan id one which should be
carefully thought over and no oppor
tunity neglected.
Of Interest to The Business Men
Must Study Selling Conditions.
The advertising man of the future
will be compelled more and more to
study the problems of distribution
and salesmanship. Advertising can
not produce , the proper returns ' un
less the selling conditions back of it are right. Advertising can no longer
be regarded as a problem all by itself.
Old-fashioned agents who have so
treated it in the past are being com
pelled to reorganize their offices to
conform to the more enlightened view
Advertising is a good way of selling goods, but it is not" the only way. It
is almost helpless unless backed up
with the right brand of salesmanship,
Evolution in the Attitude.
The attitude of great business con
cerns toward their advertising manag
ers or agents is undergoing a process
of evolution. Time was when the ad
vertising man was little more than a
copy man or a contract clerk. Of
course, there have always been not
able exceptions to this, where the advertising man was the real power
behind the throne, the first to be con
suited on broad matters of policy and often taking the initiative in matters
of policy himself.
There are three ways in which ad
vertising men are classified by the
firms that employ them. ; Three Classes of Ad Men.
First: The advertising man is the
real head of the selling organization
In such cases, he unites in his own person the duties of Sales manager and advertising manager. This limited clasa is mostly made up of pro
prietary articles, where the selling problem la not complicated, and most
ANOTHER INSTANCE . When the county commissioners leaned back in their chairs and gazed into space when the attorney for the Pennsylvania railroad
-broached the matter of double tracking their, system through the coun
ty poor farm, they thought that they had that corporation at thelf mercy. - But they did not. It was just another instance. The attorney for the corporation in question simply asked for the record In which it appeared that in the dim past of 1886 the corporation had acquired certain rights and privilege which would make unnecessary any amount of fuss the county commissioners of this day and generation might make. ' It is doubtful whether the commissioners of that day thought there would ever be any serious trouble at a later date. 'They wanted certain things which the Pennsylvania was only too glad to give them. But the railroad got what it wanted. It was only another instance. An instance of what? - It was an instance of the fact that the representatives of the people have to get up early in the morning to get around a corporation, to which time is not altogether important and such pittances of money as we are apt to think of as sizeable, are nothing at all. It is another instance that what may not seem valuable in the present may be very valuable in the future. Conditions change. It is the same thing which is seen in municipal franchises every time some little matter is thought unimportant at the time by a board of works or a city council. It is the same thing that occurs daily over the country in connection with corporations which employ counsel at high salaries toTook out for their interests. This is a contrast to the way the affairs of the people are looked after in most cases. ' Of course, sooner or later the people find out. They have come to accept this sort of thing as a matter of course. Which after all, is another instance. In this mat?er it can hardly be said that anyone will blame the railroad company for obtaining what they want. It's actions seem to have been more honorable than is'at times the case in corporation business. They simply looked out after their interests. The people and their representatives are rarely alive to the situation. And this Is not because they do not eventually care but because they forget. This is only another instance. There is a decided reason for calling attention to the fact that the people and their representatives must wake up. Within the next two years and for that matter . within the next six months or it may be a few weeks, there will be corporations of various kinds which will apply for franchises in this city. Some of the minute articles which will make no difference at the' present time will be taken up and granted, to be regretted in the future. Perhaps. Or it may be that the people and their representatives will refuse that the franchises be rushed through until they are thoroughly looked over. Perhaps they will refuse to grant a franchise for so long a period of time that there will be a chance that present conditions can change greatly. Perhaps they will awake to realization that it means money out of their pocket when there is a flaw in a franchise. But this is only perhaps. There is a strong probability based on the past that the franchises may be "another instance." That is worth thinking over.
Slogan Contest Extended
J Owing to the great amount of interest which has been manifested in the Slogan Contest the Committee has decided to extend the time to Saturday, July 10th at 6 p. m. The Best Slogan For Richmond? That is what the Young Men's Business Club wants for advertising Richmond. The Club offers a prize of FIVE DOLLARS for the phrase or slogan selected as the most suitable for the fight for a bigger and better town. Slogans and phrases 6hould be sent to the Slogan Contest Editor of either the Palladium or the Item. Slogans arriving before noon will be published in both papers the same day. Every one is eligible. Send in as many ideas as you have. The judges are to be announced later. What the Club wants is something new, crisp and affective. It wants something that won't wear out because it, is to be used permanently in the future tampaign for Richmond enterprise. Second: The sales manager and
the advertising manager are on an equal footing, neither one responsible
to the other, but both co-operating for
mutual benefit and the general good of the house. In such cases, the head of the house is found to be a commanding personality, who does not care to turn over any important de
tail to a subordinate, but keeps his finger directly upon the pulse of the entire business.
Third: The largest of the three
classes, where the advertising manager or agent traces his authority to the manager of sales. For example, this is the plan of organization in the new Selfridge Store in London, where the methods are the outgrowth of Mr.
Selfridge's long experience in a com
manding position in the great Chicago house of Marshall Field.
Get In the Thick of the Fray. Now It is obvious that ho matter in
which of the three classifications the advertising man finds himself, his usefulness is enlarged by an intimate
knowledge of actual salesmanship and
distribution. A theoretical knowledge will not answer. He must be in the thick of the fray. He must be posted on how competitors are marketing their goods, and even in other lines, every bit of information that he can gather Is just eo much added to his
stock in trade. Books like "Human Nature in Selling Goods," by James H. Collins, and papers like Printers' Ink and System, serve a very real purpose in this new order of things.
But. of course, the best source of
help the advertising man can obtain
is actual digging into the everyday
problems of his particular situation. Every merchandising campaign is different. The danger comes from trying to apply hard-and-fast rules to all alike. Even two houses selling the
same kind of goods at the same prices

last evening, the horse Complex is not
in the stable of Curt Gosnell, but in the stable of L. IX Commons of Centerville, Ind., who trains and drives him in all his races, driving him in
his winning race at Hamilton, O., last week. Would be giaa to have you correct this statement, as this is a horse that has received all his education and development through the hands of Ij. D. Commons, nobody ever having been able to succeed with him, and to him all credit is due, not Mr. Gosnell of Cambridge City. Mr. Commons has some very flattering prospects in the horse line this year, having one In his hands that is due to go to a few of the grand circuit meetings. Complex was the first horse started in his stable this year and with him he won his first race. The remainder of his horses are at Indianapolis still In training, if you will correct this statement satisactorily, I will from time to time report some horse news as they go from place to place. , Horse news in your paper as a rule is appreciated, though it la generally
