You will remember the expeditions of Taft ' himself to Japan. You will think of the long cruise down the east side of South America which Secre tary Root made, dispensing good feel lag.' You will recalj certain expedi tioni through the United States, which Roosevelt took care of. Now the same thing is about to happen over again. One man eoes to Japan another here, another there Taft has just finished his southern trip and will go out West. ' What does all this mean in a local way? " 1 ' It means that men today when they want to , transact ; business and --. get things done, go as Knox, secretary of state will go to the places where they want to do business and get acquaint ed. ' Knox will go to Europe to talk thingsi over with statesmen diplomatic agents, "etc. i . -. ,,',' This has something to do wth an inland town called Richmond, Indiana. These men will be able to do things for the United States simply because they are on the spot. They are the advance , guards. They are ,'the feel ers, the men who encourage good business relations. Last Week Richmond sent a delegation over to Dayton. There will be a Fall Festival in Richmond but who would have known it outside of the immediate vicinity? That was simply a local application of what is going on all over the coun try. The Scouting Party whether it is used by, the administration or the Chi cago business men is the modern way f doing business. 44 B. C. AND LATER -. We in the Middle West in the Paw Paw Belt may not be so very much in terested in the color of Cleopatra's hair. Nor w HI we get excited over the announcement that the whole Cleopatra story is nothing more or less than a Roman campaign story put Into circulation like the Fairbanks buttermilk and cocktail affair. Nevertheless Italian historian , Ferreo has a message to us, albeit of the wireless variety of historical research Look then, says Ferreo. Time was when all the seven Ro man hills which we believe fondly were palaces were not the extrava gant things of the imagination. The reason we believe in the vast riches and the corruption of Rome is because In reality Rome was poor and the press agents were calamity howlers. We who are extravagant in America play the prodigal son with less dang er than , if we - lived In ancient Rome because we have annihilated space and time and pessimism. v Ferreo is the only modern historian who recognizes the fact that the new must overcome the old and what Is new today is old tomorrow. Such is progress. And such is as true in Spodunk as in Ancient Rome or Modern New. York. It was the battle of the New over the Old that killed Rome and made Rome live. It . killed Rome because toe. New could not get enough resources behind it to amalgamate with the Old.' 4 - j Hence we call it Progress z J let It go t that and are satisfied. " The oldest thing In the world is the ever waged battle of the New over the ; Old. Last week's radicals are this week's conservatives. u But don't drop a spike in the machinery says Ferroo.
LAW ENFORCEMENT IN CAMBRIDGE The recent trouble culminating last
Saturday night in the arrest of certain New Castle men who make a week end in the west end of the county has several phases? To our mind the most important one is the fact that the citi zens' of Cambridge City are interested in the Enforcement of law and order. It Is not unnatural that the citizens of Cambridge should ' become weary: of the weekly inroads of a suit case" brigade. - There is but one thing to do and that we are sure the Cambridge peo ple are convinced of it. - That is noth ing more or less than the.' enforcement of law. To this proposition there is not a man in the county but will agree. Cambridge has a good name which is worth taking care of. No amount of good fellowship can overlook the fact that there must be certain restrictions in conduct.' There is no law by which interlopers from other counties can be kept at home, but when they are la this county they must be given to un derstand that they hire to behave themselves. , . .,,." Beside this the legality of procedure in holding court on Sunday is of com paratively minor importance. As a Cambridge man as quoted In the. Palladium, said last night in its news columns, "Something will have to be done." Cambridge is a law, abiding town and cannot afford to suffer from' the depredations of New Castle men' who cannot connect cause and effect. TWO KINDS OF SMILES There, are two kinds of smiles. That is a foolish reminder you say. Yes, right here in this town we have the fullest development of both sorts. Right here in this town one kind of smile is gradually getting the better of the other. And what does that mean? One is the joyous, optimistic smile of accomplishment the other is simply a sneer. Which do you think will win out, in the long run? The smile that docs things, or the smile that puts a damper on things. We have had experience with both Every man on Main street has had experience with both. .Every man who hires labor has had experience with both and every ' man who has worked for another has' met them both also. The pessimist will smile, but he wilt smile in. the all i-wise spirit of ridicule. The man will giggle over the mistakes of his fellow work ers. . There is the other who will use his expression of hope In the fact of the greatest adversity. WTiich one do you see oftenest? Which one is on top in Richmond Items Gathered in From Far and Near THE BLACK HAND. From the Chicago Tribune. The mailed hand of the law is hav ing a lot of trouble in making con nection with the . Black Hand.1 , From the Toledo Blade. It develops that the fame of being the home of the Black Hand doesn't belong to any particular town. From the Pittsburg Gazette Times. A Toledo attorney declares there is no such thing as the Black Hand society. If he is right, what a lot of apologizing the detectives will have to do to the public. From the Buffalo Evening News. If th e king of the Black Hand has been caught there will be no charge of regicide if he gets it where the chicken got the ax. , From the Milwaukee Sentinel. IThe Black Hand society has been given a body blow. It has been brok en up again. ' From the Indianapolis News. In grasping the Black Hand just now the iron hand of the law is showing a tendency to take off Its velvet glove. From the Indianapolis News. The Black Hand should be ampu tated just between the head and the shoulders. . . 8ILENT AFRICA. From the Albany Evening Journal. It is getting to be dullest Africa. From the Cleveland Plaindealer. All's quiet on the Ijinkl, or whatever its jungle name is. From the Chicago News. . ' More details of what Mr. Roosevelt is doing would greatly help the mov ing picture men who have to reproduce his actions in some back lot for the benefit of the hungry machine. From the Milwaukee Sentinel. . The man who started the report that Col. Roosevelt was lost in the; African jungle would no doubt be blackballed by the Ananias club. From the Nashville Tennessean. ; Wall street doesn't show the least uneasiness .about the failure 'to hear from Roosevelt for ten days. From the Providence Bulletin. Something seems to be missing from the daily news. Is it the morning report from East Africa. . From the Ohio State Journal. ; ' The most sensational development yet in connection with the faunal expedition is that it has gone ten days without getting any : newspaper dispatches through. . EXTRAVAGANCE. .From the Jacksonville Times-Union.
Mrs. Howard Gould is reported1 as
saying that she can: not lire decently on less than $120,000 a year. If this is true it shows how much harder it is for some people to live decently than for others. - .From the Detroit Journal. Perham Mrs. Gould feels that $40.000 a year for gowna isn't too much for one who has once suffered the sar torial limitations of a circus performFrom the Cleveland Leader. If Mrs. Gould dressed and undressed as often as claimed there should be no difficulty in proving that she never had any time to do anything wrong. From the Kansas City Times. Mrs. Howard Gould testifies that her costuming costs $35,000 to $40,000 a year. ' There are a whole lot of sten ographers in ' Kansas City who look just as stylish, and much prettier on $12 a week. From the Pittsburg Gazette Times. Anyway one woman has been found who changes her gown oftener than she does her mind. From the Toledo Blade. Mrs. - Katherine Clemmons Gould seems ont to have taken time to read the bargain adrertisements. TWINKLES No Object of Sympathy. "You don't hear any more about the man with the hoe." "No," answered Mr. Crosslots. "The man who can stay home and fool around the garden is lucky compared to the one who has to go back and forth to town and tote bundles." Homicidal Desperation. "So you are afraid to discharge your cook?" - - "Yes. We'll have to adopt heroic measures. ' "What will you do?" "Move into the country and put a gasoline stove in the kitchen." Observation. Of public servants as of those In private life 'tis true Some startling things they might dis close If they told all they knew. Careless Charles. "Charley, dear," said young Mrs. Torkins, "what is a piker?" "A piker is a man who starts with a shoe string and tries to run it up into a bank roll." "How careless of you! Every time you used to go to the races you insisted on wearing button shoes!" Classics and Best 8ellera, "The men who wrote the great Eng lish classics were not noted as pro ducers of best' sellers, remarked the critic.' -5r:- . "No, answered the complacent author; "but nearly every classic was the result of a disappointed effort, to produco. a best seller." Meeting a Crlala. Ef 'Mandy was a suffragette, ? WRIGHTS CHOOSE FLIGHT COURSE Are Making Speedy Preparations for the Official Government Test.
AERONAUTS ARE CAREFUL GIVING MUCH CONSIDERATION TO MAKE TEST RECORD BREAKER AND TO AVOID REPETITION OF FATALITY. Washington, June 22. That the Wright brothers will take every precaution to prevent any recurrence of the accident to OrriUe Wright at Ft. Myer last September is evident from ifee metboda they are puseulag la consection with the resumption of the aeroplane trials this week. It is not likely that they will make their speed trials over the course to Alexandria, Va., on account of the roughness of the country in that direc tion, but it 'most probable that they will take the five mile course in the direction of Falls Church, Va., west of Ft. Myer. fV The machine which Orvill will use to complete the government trial is entirely new with the exception of tho motor, which is the same one used in the machine wrecked last year. A double set of guy wires has been attached to the rudder. . Orville Wright explained that al though he had been under the impression that the accident last fall was due to the vibrations of those same guy wires, after an examination of the wrecked part of the machine at Dayton he was convinced that the accident was caused . bjr the greater power of one propeller (causing the entire rear part of the machine to strain on one side. This caused one blade of one propeller to strike the guy wires breaking them from their fastenings and disabling the entire machine. Orville and Wilbur Wright, with their chief mechanic, Charles E. lor and Lieut, B. D. Foulols of the signal corps, worked on the intricate arrangement of the wires bracing the plane. The Wrights do not expect that their aeroplane will be ready to fly before Friday or Saturday. Orville Wright said that the machine ts a new one and he would make several preliminary flights over the Ft. Myer drill grounds before venturing upon the official flight. It is probable that they will be ready for the first preliminary flight on Wednesday. The Wrights must complete their official trials by Monday, and it is evident from the fact that they have not applied for an extensioa of time that it is their belief they can make the speed and endurance trial by that time. Grounds Are Dangerous. Since the flight last year the Ft. Myer drill grounds have been entirely makes it dangerous for a machine flying low. A telephone wire which connected the aero shed with the headquarters of the fort was removed today at the request of the Wrights because of the additional danger. The speed trial of the Wright aeroplane which must be made in a flight over a course five miles from the fort and return will be the first cross country run ever made by a hearier-than-alr mahcine over rough and hilly country. The endurance trial will trquire the Wrights to remain aloft for two hours, the machine carrying two men and sufficient fuel for 200 miles. Gen. Allen appointed the following
officers as members of the board , which is to conduct the trial: MaJ. George O. Squier, MaJ. C. McK. Saltsman. Capt. Charles S. Wallace, Capt. : C Des Chandler, Lieut. F. P. Lahm, Ueut. Benjamin D.
