However, It Is Believed That Desert Kinney, , in Charge of Car, Has Given Out His Deposition.

my "TALK APLENTY" AT THE RIGHT TIME Sorter County Coroner and The Prosecutor Are Busily Engaged in Making' Probe Of the Affair.

CLEARS THE COMPLEXION

OVERNIGHT

Michigan City, Ind.. June 22. Delbert Kinney, conductor of the eastbound . traction car in which all the fatalities occurred In the Chesterton wreck 8aturday night, and on whom company officials are inclined to place blpme in connection with Bert Reed. , the dead motorman, was brought from a South Bend hospital to the St. . Anthony hospital here. Soon afterward, It is asserted, he gave his

deposit on to a representative of Cor

oner Carson of Porter county. Kin ney was at first believed to be fatally injured, but Ik showing remarkable recovery. Kinney save out an interview last night, In which he would neither af

firm nor deny that he had given a de

position to the Porter county coroner. "I'm not talking," said Kinney.

They can talk and write all they

want to about me going to the woods, about me being insane or about me being drunk Saturday night and all that rot, but when the time comes I will talk, and talk a plenty." Deposition Tells of Events.

Kinney seemed rational, although

lie referred to the expected visit of

'the coroner in a peculiar way. It is

understood that he made the deposi

tion last night in which he declared

that he noticed the car was running

past its meeting . point and that he twice gave the motorman the one-bell

signal to stop and finally started up fnrvirri roarhln rr tha imnlrlnv iwtm-

partment when he saw the headlight of the other car, quickly followed by

the crash.

What happened after that was hazy

would not discuss the story at this time. . "My memory is clear." said he. "I recall everything that happened up to ptbe time of the wreck, but I do not jcare to talk about It now. The papers tiave made enough of this already. 'When the coroner comes I suppose I will have to talk to him, if I want to, Although I won't if I don't want to. 'They can't make me talk." v Changes to Puff Cigarettes. In answer to a question as to why lie came to the hospital here instead of remaining at the South Bend hospltal, ' where he was receiving good care Kinney said: "They won't allow me to smoke

.cigarettes there. The place didn't

weem like home to me." 1 v : He puffed away at a cigarette con

tentedly and declared he would be out lin a few days. He expressed deep reatret at the death of Motorman Reed.

fbut could not be Induced to go into

.details concerning the orders for the

meeting place that night.

' Coronet Carson of Porter county,

mho today opened his investigation at Chesterton, the scene of the wreck. Is (endeavoring to determine whether or snot the presence of Paul Wilson, as-

tion company who was in the cab with

the motorman of the east-bound train

had anything to do with the wreck. Did Official Hear Orders? ' ' Whether .Wilson saw the train or

der and heard it repeated Is a point

Sof interest and also whether the car

passed the prescribed siding 'with his Jcnowledge or otherwise. Wilson is

auuoug u seriously injured at a

South Bend hospital.

Pimples, Rash, Eruptions, Etc., Quickly eradicated by New Skin Remedy. Since Its discovery one year ago, poslam, the new skin remedy, has, in its extraordinary accomplishments, exceeded the most sanguine expectations of the eminent specialist who gave it to the world. - It has cured thousands of cases of eczema and

eradicated facial and other disfigure

ments of years' standing. The terrible itching attending eczema Is stopped with the firet application, giving proof of its curative properties at the very outset. In less serious skin affections, such as pimples, rash, herpes, blackheads, acne, barber's-itch, etc., results show after an overnight application, only a small quantity being required to effect a cure. Those who use poslam for these minor skin troubles can now avail themselves of the special 50-cent package, recently adopted to meet such needs. Both tbe 50-cent package and tbe regular $2 jar may now be obtained in Richmond at W. H. Sudhoff's and other leading drug stores. Samples for experimental purposes may be had free of charge by writing direct to the Emergency Laboratories, 32 West Twenty-fifth Street, New York City.

Lambke, who told of issuing the meeting point orders and also that the orders were repeated twice and O K'd at Gary so that, as he says there could have been no misunderstanding' concerning the meeting point for the two trains. Several other persons having knowledge of the wreck details were exam

ined, but only a good start was made

yesterday and the investigation will be continued today. It U understood

every effort will be made to discover

whether or not men in high authority are guilty of negligence.

The two members of the west

bound' car crew reiterated stories

heretofore told. Schimmel said that he saw the reflection of the headlight of the east-bound car on the trees at

the south side of the "Shadyside

curve, and he immediately turned off

the power, applied the brakes and

shouted a warning to - the dozen or

more passengers in his car.. He then

opened the door and leaped for his

life. Conductor Paul testified that

he was in the front end of the car

just prior to the crash.

Prosecuting attorney Charles R.

Buckhart is closely following the tes

timony , of witnesses . for the purpose of learning whether or not he will be justified in bringing the accident be

fore the Porter county grand jury.

According to Buckhart there will be no shielding of the officials of the South Shore company if evidence is given to show that they are in any

way to blame for the collision.

Up at New Castle there is great re

joicing because of the defeat handed the Cambridge City Grays by the Krell French team. The score was 0 to 1

and the New Castle Courier says it

was the cleanest game played in that

town this season. Cambridge City had

a balloon ascension and when it was over the game was on ice. The Wayne county team is credited with only two hits. The Grays were leading 1 to ) until the sixth, but three runs in that round and the same number in the next inning were too many. "Proud

and haughty" is applied to the Cam

bridge team at New Castle.

Main street, so he can go to papa's of

papa has not telephoned of your hopeful's arrival In about fifteen minutes.

you are worried and call up the of

fice. But think of a six year old little

Wabash boy. He has made the long trip from Germany across the ocean unaccompanied, to be with his par

Money the lad needed on his trip

Germany. The lad has arrived safely

Sheriff Meredith has been instructed

by the county commissioners to keep loafers off the grass in the court house

yard. Never was the lawn so beauti

ful and , witb the exception of a few

bare spots worn by boys in their games and sports the grass Is thick

and luxuriant. The order of the com

missioners is the result of abuses by

a crowd of boys and young men that

makes the court house yard its central loafing place. All kinds of games

have been indulged in and no regard

ever was sustained for the grass. The

sheriff will enforce the order. :.

To Restore Lawn.

A special effort has been made to

restore the lawn to good condition

The numerous paths worn across the

green have been spaded up and sown with grass seed. ; Barriers have been erected to block their use. Boards

have been erected warning pedestrians to use the walks and keep off the grass. A small part of the public is to blame for the order of the commissioners court. Two years ago the lawn was dedicated to, the city as a park and play ground. But no attempt was made to keep the lawn and flower beds

in condition, so now the public is

barred. There is no prettier spot in

the city than the court house block.

. Complaint against the midge injur

ing the wheat in Wayne county has

not been as general as in Rush county.

The midge Is a small green bug that

destroys the grain. It attacks the head

and In a short time has brought ruin. In Rush county every township is afflicted! to a certain extent. It is claim

ed worms have attacked the corn. The

worm works at the root and the result

is seen when the leaves turn a purple or pink color. The cause of the pests is attributed to the wet weather of

this spring.

All Week High Clas Vaudeville.

Vaudeville at the Phillips. Quite a well rounded bill in vaude

ville was inaugurated at the New Phillips Monday afternoon and the

audience at that time and; that wit

nessed it last night showed marked appreciation of the various stunts. Included on the program are the Otora troupe of Japanese Children, who excel in the line of ring tartists and acrobats, probably giving as good a per

formance in this field' as the house

has yet had ; Henning and Morelle, whose long suit is music and impersonations, and who do both well; Gladys Marion Hill, the gypsy girl violinist, whose playing of this instrument is entirely distinctive and who has much native ability. To these

must be added the motion pictures

and illustrated song, which, on this oc

casion, are no mean part of the program. Manager Murray is making every effort in behalf of his patrons and

the heat need not keep any one away

from the New Phillips.

PEOPLE ARE MUCH MOREJHTEBESTED Art Exhibit Doorkeeper Points To This Fact.

Probably the best testimonial which was given by a man In regard to the art exhibit, at the Garfield building, was that of William McGrew, the well known janitor of the high school building. Mr. McGrew. by reason of his long connection with the high school, is acquainted with nearly every person who formerly attended that school. In speaking to Mrs. M. F. Johnston, president of the Art association, recently Mr. McGrew said, "Do you know Mrs. Johnston, people look at the pictures longer than they use to. They study them and afterwards talk about them." Mr. McGrew has acted In the capacity of door man for the Art association for a number of years and he has had the opportunity to study the patrons of the exhibit.
