Evolution of tke Skat. , The earliest known skates were those roughly shaped from the canon bone of a horse or cow, and Scandinavian archaeologists claim an antiquity of l.GOO years for these. The wearer of these rude skates obtained speed not by a stroke of the foot, but by pushing himself along with a piked staff. Skates made entirely of wood were next introduced. These were followed by wooden ones shod with 'fiat strips of iron." Then were gradually developed bladed skates, and finally experts evolved the Fen .type. Norwegian racer and figure skates of the present day. London Standard. . '' " ' Offering Urn Challencee. ' "Do you claim that the world owes you a living?" " --. Ko,n answered Meandering Mike. BUFFALO HEAD A VISITOR IN CITY Kickapoo Tribal King, With His Squaw, Arrived in Richmond from Cincinnati Minus Any Wampum. HIS SHOW MANAGER SKIPPED WITH COIN While in Richmond the; Two Aborigines Were ; Detained At Headquarters Until Transportation Was Given. "Bis Chief love a Kickapoo maiden, love her-heap miich do."' ' And the big chief, himself, . "none other than Chief Buffalo Head of the Kickapoo Indians of Wisconsin was !n the city this morning. He is some "Big" chief. About seven feet tall and so big in every other way that he was detained at police headquarters with the best kind of courteous treatment. It was more due to the size of the visitor, than. any desire to heap honors upon him that Superintendent Staubach was very affable. The Big Chief of the bluo coat brigade was not looking- for any exhausting combat today and he deemed it most advisable to keep his distinguished visitor at headquarters where there would be no danger of free distribution of fire water. . 1 , "" ' ; ;; - ,- Was Lean of Purse. . Chief Buffalo Head arrived in the city this morning from Cincinnati. He Is big in body but lean in purse.-When he reached here ho was strapped, busted flat, and the Wisconsin wilds were a long trek away. With him was his squaw, who in the Indian language may bear some such name as Little Bright Eyes, but could more appropriately be called Big Roly-Poly. Buffalo Head 6trod ahead of Mrs. Buffalo Head, as the two passed down the streets with the stately stride of regal splendor. At the police station the township trustee was called upon for help and he furnished the aborigines with transportation to Indianapolis. The pair might have been; detained fox the summer season, as an attraction in the elk. pen at the Glen. A Cincinnati Account. -The Cincinnati Enquirer gives the following account of an episode In which Chief Buffalo Head appeared: Eight Indians early yesterday morning walked single flic into th office of Federal Marshal Lewis and began making demonstratlona. At first the doughty marshal thought he was in an entertainment arranged by some of his Shriner friends, but the whole affair took on ouch a realistic turn that

There ho discovered one woman the wife of the leader, and six other men just above the average height. The leader was Chief Buffalo Head, and although Mrs. Buffalo Head is a large woman she did not seem to be half as big as her spouse. All are Kickapoo Indians and live in Wisconsin. 1 Manager Decamped. The chief explained that they had been . showing . at Chester park, but that their manager suddenly decamped leaving them without enough wampum to purchase Indian meal. They declared that the manager's Action was a very mean trick. They, stated that they were completely "broke," and they wanted Uncle Sam to give them assistance on the ground that they are wards cf the nation end that when they are away from heme and in distress the . government cught to help them to return safely.
