Making an Effort to Compel Employment of Competent Men. MANY COMPLAINTS MADE INTERURBAN COMPANIES ARE NOT NEARLY AS CAREFUL SE LECTING EMPLOYES AS THE STEAM ROADS ARE. (Special Correspondent.) Indianapolis, June 17. The Indiana railroad commission is starting after 'the interurbans and proposes to go as fur AJ( ft. Mn tnmrtLrA mmiwlllnfi' tfi tinterurban to employ competent men !as motormen and conductors. The com mission has received from time to time laoores of complaints from interurban patrons of incompetency on the part of employes and the commission finds that the interurbans are not anywhere near so careful in selecting their employes as the steam roads. In many cases the commission has found men ' are made motormen after not more than two weeks running on a car under the Instruction of an older motorman who was probably as badly uninformed when he started. The same Is true of conductors it is said. .Where Difference Is. On a steam road a man does not become an engineer until he has served several years as a fireman and has learned everything about an engine. A man does not become a conductor until he has served as a brakeman and has learned switching as well as all of the other duties of a trainman. Therein lies the difference between the system used by the steam roads end that used by the interurbans. The commission hopes to bring about reform that will raise the standard of efficiency among interurban employes. Circular letters have been sent to all the interurbans doing business in the state asking them for information! in regard to their employes and manner of selecting them, and as soon as these answers are received the commission will try to formulate something that will afford the relief demanded by the public.
