U1S There Is a Marked Difference Between These Two Acts.
THE POWER OF OBSERVATION It Skeuld Be Cultivated Even In the Meet Ordinary Things A Faculty That Is PoMMMd by All, but The Is Developed by the Few. It is the hope and desire of all parents that their children shall make some sort of a mark in tba world when tbey grow up. They 4o not 1st the lortry of cases expect that their tpring will becoaae famous sad make names that will live for a gee. but they cherish the t bought that tbey will be successful men snd women In sosse profession or business. Tbst is the keynote that success shall be their portiou. Tet it is a fact that most parents cegiect or pay very little attention to one part of the child's education which is of the highest laaportance. Tbey do not train the perceptive faculties. Power of observation will help you more than anything else in your struggle for existence, and yet there are comparatively few people who are kecu observers. One small fsct will prove this latter statement. The man who observes everything, be who sees everything be looks at. to singled eat either as en inquisitive person or a clever one. and tbls snows that he la an exception. It is easy to give Instances of this lack of perception e cn in the ordinsry things of life. Some years ago an art 1st engaged In a Ixudou firm of print ers had to draw an advertisement la which the ceotral.ftguro was a cock In the act of crowing. Nothing seemed easier, but when be set to work the artist found blmse'.f confronted by a difficulty does the cock show Its tongue prominently when It crows? Every one of the hundred men employed by tbe firm had seea a cock crow score of times, yet not one of tbcm conka answer the question. Tbe artist bed to go f a friend who kept fowls and chase tbe poor rooster round and round tbe yard until It crowed. A schoolmaster, wishing to test tbe perception of his boys, asked them bow many times tbey bad seen a cow or pictures of that animal and found, as be had expected, that all the beys bad seen tbe creature more times than tbey could remember. Then be offered to give small prises to the boys who could correctly answer this question: "Are a cow's ears above, below. In. front of or behind Its bonis T" Only,' two boys gained prises, and their answers were guesswork. Now sit down and test yourself to . tome such simple .manner. Ton have all seen a horse ' down." Can you describe bow It rises? Does it get np ou its fore feet first and then on Its bind feet, or does It kneel first, tbea get en ' its hind feet and finally on Its fere feet? ' ' ' ' ' However, you need not confine your, self to tbe animal kingdom la testing ' your perceptive faculties. Many subjects will suggest themselves to you. ' As an excuse for tbls want of observation It to often urged that "a mast can't know everything." but tbe excuse to a bad one. There Is great differ, ence between knowing little or nothing and knowing everything. When the faculty has been trained It requires no more effort to note tbe points of tbe object looked st tbsn It does to glance at that same object snd come sway ' none tbe wiser. Tbe chances of asccess In life are 0S4 the side of the man who knows certain things because be bss learned about them by using his senses instead of having to go to a book for all that he wishes to know. Books sre indispensable, as there sre so many things which cannot come within the range of our observation, but wherever posslblo we should nse our senses to acquire knowledge st first band. This will explain why .men who can- ' not read or write have bnOt np substantial businesses. Tbey have made use of tbe power possessed by alL but cultivated by very few. - Tbe perceptive faculty must be train-' ed during childhood and youth. After Urn. ..m S tu i mm iiilLlfc M.. very little progress can be made. A grown man is unable to develop his powers of observation to any satisfactory degree. Tenth is full of energy, and that to tbe time to Inculcate tbe lessen tbst we should see all that oar eyes rest upon. : It should be tbe object of every parent to teacb bto child to note every object that 'comes In bis way. Whew out for a walk in oark tbe child should be told to observe tbe shapes of the, leaves on the different trees, the paling of the color of animals toward tbe under part of tbe body, and so on. and should be told that when ashed a Question on the subject he must be prepared to say that It is so, not that he thinks It to. All children have Inquiring minds, and after a walk or two. coupled with such instruction as we have mentioned, you will find tbe child making great progress and acquiring a quality that will be Invaluable In after life. One of tbe methods adopted by Bondiu. tbe conjurer, for quickening the perception of his son was to tasks him walk rapidly past a shop window or a stall on which a number of articles were displayed and then write down a list of tbe objects' noticed. At Srst only half s dosea articles were perceived durfna tbe moment occupied In paasteg tbe store or window, but sfteff having done ft once a day for a month tbe boy wss able to make a Ttot of forty. objects.
