There are but two ways to go about Canton on foot or in a sedan chair. The streets are from four to eight feet wide, the average being probably about six feet, and wheeled vehicles are out of the question. Even the jinrlklsha cannot be. used here. If you try to make your way on foot, the density of the moving masses renders progress almost Impossible, and rowdies and pickpockets are numerous, so that the best plan is to take a responsible native guide and chair. , , The chairs are carried bytwo, three and sometimes four men, .according to the weight of tbe passenger VuThe two bamboo poles by whicfeiMMi chair is supported are about elgbtecA-eet long and are joined at the front and rear ends by a crossiece. ' After you have taken yoar seat the coolies raise the ends of the poles to their , shoulders and are en at a dogtrot, only interrupted by a "congestion of traffic," which occurs very frequently. It is surprising to see how rapidly they, can go tarengb the crowded streets. The whole line of chair carriers are yelling all the time, as are other people who are carrying burdens, for as there are no carts in use the entire merchandise of the city is transported In the same manner.' not by chairs, of course, but slung on poles carried across the shoulders. The noise resulting from the simultaneous shooting of every one. In sight, both In front and in the rear, for the stream is flowing in both directions, is enough to make one wonder if the long expected riot has begun. Dearer Post To Trenefor Printing. , . Anything printed on paper with ordinary printer's ink can be transferred to a clean sheet of paper In the following; manner: Take three drams of common yellow soap and dissolve it in one quart of hot water. When cool add one and a half fluid ounces of spirits of turpentine. Put all In a bottle, cork it and shake well together. Take a sponge or soft brush and apply some of the solution to tbe printed surface. Let it soak for a few minutes. Lay it face down upon the paper on which the transfer Is required and press both together evenly between the leaves of a thick book placed under weights. In a time Tarylng from half a minute to several hours, according to tbe newness of tbe printed original it will be transferred In reverse. s V John Bright used to tell bow a barber who was cutting his hair once said to hfan: "You 'ave a large 'ead. for a large 'ead means a large brain, and a large brain is the most useful thins a man can ave. as it nourishes the roots of the "sir"

Those who are seeking to have their matrimonial affairs straightened out rxe James Townscnd, versus Edna Townsend. Epps versus Epps and McDonald versus McDonald. , f STRICKEN LAST NIGHT. B. B. Myrick, Sr., living on North Eleventh street, was stricken with paralysis at his homo last evening. He is in a serious condition, but he is reported as better today. Mr. Myrick is well known in this community. He is the father of ex-county treasurer, B. B. Myrick, Jr. v Unable to Knool. One fancies thst few types of men can from time to time have afforded royalty more amusement of a quiet sort than provincial mayors of England. "From the Foreland to Penzance," by Clive Holland, contains the story of a mayor of Weymouth .who during one of the visits of King George to the town was destined to afford "comic relief to a ceremony of some Importance. The occasion was the presentation of an address of welcome to the king, and we sre told that the mayor on approaching to present it, to tbe astonishment and dismay of all, instead of kneeling, as he had been told to do, seized the queen's hand to shake it as he might that of any other lady. Colonel Gwynne, the master of tbe ceremonies, hurriedly told him of the faux pas, saying, "You should have kneeled, sir." "Sir, 1 cannot." was the reply. "Everybody does, sir," hotly asserted the colonel. - . The mayor grew red and, evidently much upset, exclaimed, "Confound it sir. but I've got s wooden leg! History records that "a smile suf fused tbe face of her majesty, and the king laughed outright." . On the west slope of the Cascade mountains a giant, red fir was recently blown across the tracks of the Northern Pacific railroad. The traffic was blocked by the monster tog, which measured eight feet in diameter. There was no saw within miles that was big enough to cut the timber and as the railroad company could not wait tbe five days required to saw a section from the huge log. dynamite was placed in deeply bored holes and the aged tree blown to splinters. " It was easier to repair ten rods of roadbed than to saw through eight feet of solid red fir. 5

NO REASONS FOR ACTION OTHER CITY OFFICIALS LEAVE TO INSPECT HEATING PLANTS AND HAVE ALL THEIR EXPENSES GUARANTEED. At the eleventh hour the franchise committee of the city council refused to accompany the board of works and other city official on an inspection trip of tbe hot water heating systems of Terre Haute, Indianapolis, Lebanon and Frankfort. The cause of the action is not known but Councilman Englebert was appealed to by Mayor Schillinger to get two other councilmen and make the trip in place of the committee. The matter of expenses' could not have entered into tbe affair as the local capitalists who desire a franchise to construct a heating system in this city, guaranteed the expenses of the party. The franchise committee includes, Councilmen Ogborn, Deuker and Von Pien. The city officials who made the trip included City Clerk C. W. Merrill, Mayor R. A. Schillinger, Fred Charles, city engineer; Watson P. O'Neal and B. B. Johnson, members of the board of works. They left this afternoon for Terre Haute. Councilman Englebert is trying to make arrangements this afternoon with two other councilmen to make the trip this evening. At the meeting of the council last Monday evening, a omuon was unani Monday evening, a motion was unanichise committee and city officials to make the trip.
