ONLY AUTHENTIC PICTURE OF ABDUL 11 WAS SKETCHED BY GENERAL LEW WALLACE
Indianapolis. r May 6. Gen. Lew
Wallace's pencil drawing of Abdul
Hamid II, the recently -deposed Sultan
of Turkey, will be on exhibition et the Herroo Art Institute, during the next week or ten days. Henry Lane Wallace went to Crawfordsville and brought It to Indianapolis. It la one of the prizes of the Wallace collec .Hon and library at Crawfordsville, and Is f perhaps the only really authentic drawing made of the Sultan from the time he took the throne until he was deposed. It was made in 1891, while General Wallace was ' United States ' minister to Constantinople, and while he enjoyed such, close relations with the Sultan. It Is theproduct of numerous visits made by i General Wallace
to his Imperial friend. Each time he would come home with fresh mental
pictures of the Sultan or slight cor
rections, and the picture la the result
of all of these impressions recorded
at the time. It is a profile view, and shows Abdul's peculiar nose. It is one of the few pictures that General
Wallace worked out In complete detail. He was almost a master with the pencil In such drawings, and this one is probably his best' It is entirely in pencil and is about sixteen by twenty Inches in dimensions. "" Last , year Homer Davenport, who got two kinetoscope flashes of the Sultan, made a drawing of htm which has been . widely reproduced aa the "only original and authentic drawing made of the Sultan." Either because of a personal dislike of each publicity, or because of . religions sentiment which envelopes the person of the Sultan and Caliph in a. sacred ataoephere, pictures of Abdul Hatold were prohibited during his reign. To the
world were Riven "fake pictures or a
photograph taken in London two
years prior to his ascension, until re
cently when one or two photographers
have secretly been able to get snap
shots of him on hls Friday pilgrim
ages to the mosque. The Wallace picture. Which is a more careful study of the Sultan than any one else has made and shows him accurately as he
appeared almost twenty years ago, and the Davenport drawing, which, though only a record of hurried glimp
see of him, is exceedingly good, are
perhaps the best drawings made of
Abdul Hamid.
W. H. Fox, director of the Art Institute, has hung the picture promi
nently, and It is expected that, b
osnse of the renown of the artist -and
also because of the current Interest to Abdul Hamid, it will attract a great deal of attention. It will be returned
to the Wallace library at Crawfords
vflle Immediately after Its exhibition.

"The export of canary birds to the United States from this district during the year 1908 amounted in value to $130,355," writes Consul Thompson, at Hanover, "against $136,354 in 1907. It is estimated that there are not lest than 5,000,000 caged birds in the
United States. The v ordinary house
canary will eat twenty-five pounds of seed a year, which represents a cost for each bird of $1.50. It will be
seen that this luxury represents an
outlay on the part of the American people of $7,000,000 annually for seed
alone"; . '

Local Interest Is taken in the suit instituted at Indianapolis by Henry W. Bullock, in -which the Marion county
commissioners are made the defendants. The plaintiff maintains the county commissioners have no right to place orphan or other children, who are wards of the county, in White's Institute, or a similar institution, for a period longer than thirty days. He claims the law stipulates thirty days is the time and the home or other
boards of charities or individuals are
expected to find permanent homes for the children within that time. No Public Home. If the suit be successful it will mean a big thing in Wayne as well as several other counties of the state. This county does not have any orphans' home of a public nature "and all children are sent to White's. They are paid for by the county at the rate of 25 cents per day. Some of the children remain at the home from one to fourteen or fifteen years unless homes are found for them. The county pays for their support. ' If the law permitted them to be kept thirty days only, it would mean quite a difference m the expense accounts.: It Is claimed the institutions do not make the proper effort to place children in private homes. It la main-
tamed they prefer keeping the children as they are sure to receive their pay. Who would find homes for the children at the expiration of the thirty day period, is a question unanswered. The charity boards as a usual thing, pay no attention to such a matter. '
