St. Louis, Mo., May 5. Press-agent methods of church advertising are not to be generally adopted - In St Louis churches, - although '- Rev. ; Columbus Polk Goodson, former pastor of the King's Highway Presbyterian church, says he started his church on the road to prosperity, by ."putting over" a "press-agent stunt" on the St. Louis papers. . Clergymen interviewed : do not approve of .the method. Rev. Dr. Goodson, now pastor of the fashionable Highland Park Presbyterian church, in Chicago, was one of the guests of honor at the King's Highway church "home-coming" last night. He gave a numerous account of how, he worked his ingenuity overtime to build
,up bis St. Louis charge.' ,
Tell HI Method. When Dr. Goodson came to St. Louis his congregation at the little King's Highway church did not number more than 75 persons on an average, and he was young and unknown to fame. His talk was of how he climbed himself
and made his church grow by diligent
use of the newspapers.
He told how nine-year old Donald
Stewart, son of A. T. Stewart, fell off
a pier at Creve Coeur Lake on No
vember 15, 1904: of how he rushed into
the water, which was hardly up to his
waist, and dragged the boy out, and then how he permitted the newspapers
to "write it up" as a thrilling rescue
"John Wanamaker, of Philadelphia,
was to speak at my church the next day," he said. "I had to do something
to attract a crowd there that would be
worthy of him." Dr. Goodson added that he had re
formed now In regard to his use of the
newspapers. .

GRECIAN CITIES IIOW HAVE RIVAL OHBnaaanaa ""'"" " Pittsburg, the Scandal-Ridden, Unbares Corrupt Morality and Shame. UNMENTIONABLE CRIMES
SEVERAL ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE AND PROMINENT CLUB AND BUSINESS MEN FEAR ACTION OF THE POLICE.
Pittsburg, "Penn., May 5. Scandalridden Pittsburg is about to blossom forth as a rival to those old Grecian cities, where degradation and shame were accepted as the real attributes of honor, and of Sodom and Gomorrah which were destroyed because, supposedly, of the existence of the sin which has stirred Pittsburg as it never has been stirred before. Three arrests already have been made, and by this evening, it Is said, other suspected ones will be taken. Among those already in custody is James R. Mason, known as "Red," a well-known pugilistic promoter. Mason was arrested in New York and now is in the Tombs awaiting extradition. ' Dr. Charles McDonald, a well-known

practitioner, with offices in the Pittsburg Life Building, is another of the prisoner. The third is John Heller, a young man about town. These three arrests resulted . from the confession of fifteen-year-old John Dechallis, who came into the hands of the police about a week ago. The boy is paralyzed as the result of the treatment he underwent. Prominent Men Named. He gave the names of a number of other boys, and when these were found by the police, they confessed, implicating at least a score of wellknown citizen's of Pittsburg, among the number being clubmen, professional men and business men. The paralyzed boy is said to be dy
ing.
Two other men were indicted, but
their identity is concealed.
The police have been trying to
keep this scandal under cover until
they succeed In arresting all those implicated. Yesterday, however, the de
tails leaked out, and a tremendous sensation was caused. Business at the Stock Exchange and in other business places was almost at a standstill nearly all afternoon during a discueslon-of the reports that were going the rounds. The reported extent of crime in Pittsburg Indicates that something in the nature of a wave of degeneracy is sweeping the city. The worst of the situation Is to he exploded when the police have trailed the members of and visitors to various club-houses through the city. These, It 1b said, form the hotbed of the singular vices which are shocking Pittsburg as Germany was shocked by the Knights of the Round Table and England by the disclosures of Lord Roseberry and the arrest, punishment and
subsequent banishment of Oscar,
Wilde. - Boys Gossip on the 8treets.
Young boys, some of them mere street arabs, are gossiping about the streets and juggling the names of
prominent men with a liberty that is appalling in view of the arrests of Dr. McDonald and "Red" Mason. They laugh when the burden is laid
at the door of any one man. They give without hesitation the names of
other boys and name clubs and private apartments where practices which have no name are the usual
evening amusement of th men who
have been their "hosts." These admissions led the police apparently everywhere Into the exclusive circles, into varioua organisations, athletic ' clubs and elsewhere. The police are still following the lead, and they are standing literally aghast at the extent of .the particular species of perversion. The police admitted tonight that several warrants had been issued. The name of a well-known base ball player has been mentioned in connection with the case.

HARRY IIEW MIIIS A COMMITTEE JOB He Would Like to Be Chairman And He Probably Can Land the Place. IS A SHREWD POLITICIAN
OTHER NAMES VlAVE BEEN MENTIONED, BUT IT IS BELIEVED THAT THEY WILL GET OUT OP THE WAY FOR NEW.
(Special Correspondent.) Indianapolis, Ind., May 5. Harry New, of this city, former chairman of the Republican National committee, is said to be a candidate for chairman of the state committee, and there Is a general opinion that he can have th place if he wants it. He is not only a receptive candidate, but he is out for it, according to the report, though he has not made any definite announcement of his aspirations. . New is one of the smoothest politicians in Indiana. ' He knows all about it, and has been through the mill from one end to the other. There was talk some time ago of running him for mayor this fall, but New said nay, nay. He said he would not be a candidate for any office and that he would not
run if nominated. So his name was
wiped off the slate. But New loves a
scrap. He likes to be in the thickest of it. He is a sportsman of the first
water, his favorite sport being duck hunting. - This sporting blood has
probably been the cause of his decis
ion to get after the state chairmanship. Durbln Talked. . There have been other names mentioned, but It is believed they will all get out of the way for New. Winfield T. Durbln, of Anderson, former governor, has been talked of, and he has said that while he Is not a candidate, "there are time when It la the duty of all good men to com to the aid of their country, and that this is one of the times. So he has been counted in 'the race for chairman. Charles F. Remy, also of this city, former reporter of the supreme court, and during the last campaign a member of the executive committee of the republican state committee, Is another one of the names mentioned. Remy says he will not make a fight for the place, but if elected he will serve, all right Then there was Dick Schaaf, of Hammond. He was talked of, and there is still a rustle here and there whenever he Is mentioned in connection with
tthe place, but it Is not believed that he
will become an active candidate. So looking at the race from all sides it appears that New will be the man if be really goes after the Job.
