Mushroom Days In Our Midst: -Early Morning Trips In Order

Mushroom days are here and lovers of the succulent fungus in and around Richmond are alive to the fact that an early morning trip into the wood, or even the field that has decaying tree, will get them many of the "musheroons" that are good to eat in many waye besides as a smother for a porter house steak. Lots of people call them musheroons without knowledge that that is the ancient form of tae name and ' its old punctuation. The old English word three hundred years ago was muscheron, from old French mouscheron whose root was mousse moss. But more interesting than the name and its origin is the fact that the

mushroom days are here, and the

hunters wil be after them often for a week or two in these parts. There is danger in the hunt, as much as in east Africa. Beware of the deadly toad, stool. It belongs to the same botanical family maybe in its larger growth it has acquired the poison ; both plants and men are prone to lose health by abnormal growth. Those who know them can distinguish easily between the toad stool and the mushroom, yet yearly there are serious sicknesses and even deaths from the mistakes made by picking the deadly, for the edible agaricus camprests, the botanical family name of mushroom and toad stool. The sponge-shaped mushrooms, which are the best of all species, are the kind that are now forcing: their way through the warm earth. Some

people never have any success in

hunting mushrooms, while others bring them home by the basketful.

The fact is, most people do not know

where to look for the tempting morsels. The best place is around old

rotten stumps, where the soil is very

rich. If there are no old stumps, they

often grow in rich soil where the

leaves have rotted. In some instances they are found growing where the grass is the thickest, but the soil 1b

always black. Where there is one

there is generally a whole patch, but on account of their being about the

same color of t ehold leaves, they are

hard to see. After a warm shower is

the best time to find them, as they spring up thick and fast. Said the wise Bacon in his Natural History, long forgotten : "Mushrooms come up in the night, and yet they are unsown, and therefore such as are upstairs in state they call in reproach mushrooms. The mushrooms have two strange properties: The one that they are so delicious to eat, the other that they come so hastily, as in a night." The toad stool is of much larger growth th?n the edible mushroom and has a rank smell as against the pleasant odor of the real mushroom. The old Scots proverb stands: "Good gear is wrapped up in small bulk."

Reidston Stock Faam has bought the Famous Imported German Coach Dorse "KELLHER" HO. 1293 "Winner of forty-seven first prises (only time shown). A Sample Statement. The fight all way was between J. Bennett Gordon, editor of the Evening Item, and Dr. W. W. Zimmerman. Edward Harris is a clean, straight young fellow, but he was backed by Interests for which the people of Richmond will not stand, and for that reason it seems as if be is to be the third man in the race. If there was a desire on the part of those fighting Zimmerman to defeat him. the defeat would have been brought about by Harris pulling off, and Gordon then would be the winner. As it stands before the polls close, it is a toss-up between Zimmerman and Gordon, though some of the most enthusiastic of the latter's friends are declaring that he will carry nearly every ward in the city." . Mr. F. G. Fritts, - Oneonta. N. T., writes: "My little girl was greatly benefitted by taking Foley's Orino Laxative, and I think it is the best remedy for constipation and liver trouble." London, May 4. There was a dem

cheers for each of the brothers. They

sang, "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows," and ended by cheering Miss
