uam uontroi ana nave a Joint Majority. (Special Correspondent.) Indianapolis, Ind., May 3. During a discussion of the present political sit uation In the state of Indiana between two republicans who are high up in the councils of the party, a few days ago, it was brought out that unless the republicans use extreme care and make use of the wisest counsel between now and the next state election they will be wiped off the boards by the "democrats. It is a far cry' from now to the next election, but It was pointed out that the present sltuaion la one that wll require all the time that Intervenes to straighten out. Figures show that the republicans have a slim chance of securing control of the next legislature. This may sound strange, but It is true. A good many Indiana Republicans will doubt it, but it Is true. A good many Indiana republicans will doubt it because they have been so successful in this state during the past sixteen years, during all of which time they have had control of the legislature, that they have come to regard it as practically impossible for them to be defeated. Continued success has made some of them chesty and -has bred in them a too apparent overconfidence. Figures May 8urprite. So that the figures may surprise them, when they show that it will be only by carrying Marion county that the republicans will be able to have a majority on joint ballot In the next legislature. If the republicans carry Marion county they may control the legislature. If they do not, according to present figures, they ' will lose out on joint ballot. f: -. This situation Is of extreme Import once to the republican ' party ' in Indiana, for it means either that the republicans will elect Senator Beverldge to succeed himself or that the Democrats will elect his successor. There ate twenty-five hold-over Senators, half of the total number being elected every two years. Of the twenty-five the democrats have fifteen and the republicans ten. This difference in favor of the democrats is due to the result of the election Jast fall, when the democrats gave the republicans such a walloping on the legislative ticket. The following are tho democratic holders: .':: Democrat Holdovers. Fred W. Beal, Vigo county: Samuel Bens, Crawford, Perry and Dubois; Salem D. Clark, Marion; Michael H. Farrell, Marion : Stephen B. Fleming, Allen; Harry E. Grube, Kosciusko and Marshall: Levi P. - Harlan, , Marion; George W. Long. Brown, Jackson and Washington; Milton T. McCarty, Carroll and Clinton; C. K. McCullough, Madison: Stephen A. Powers, Dekalb and Steuben;, Robert E. Proctor, Elkhart; Samuel D. Royse, Clay and Vigo; Frank C. Tilden, Marion, Morgan and Putnam; Will E. Yarling, Johnson and Shelby. The following are the Republican holdover senators: T. R. Brady, Fultch AUNTIES They Belong to the Whole Neighborhood. Higgins, Warren, Fountain and Vermillion; Ralph K. Kane, Hamilton and Tipton; C. W. Kimmell, Kendallville, Lagrange and Noble; David A. Lambert, Delaware; Edward E. Moore, Hancock, Fayette and Rush. But That Can Be Done. A study of the condition of things in the counties that are to elect state sen ators at the next election shows almostj beyond a doubt that the very best tbe republicans will be able to do,' unless the situation changes before election day, will be to elect fifteen new senators. If they carry Marion county this will mean a total of twenty-six instead of twenty-five, but there is no certainty that they can carry Marion county. Marion county has four sena tors, but three of them, Harlan, Farrell and Clark, are democratic hold overs, elected last fall. This leaves only one senator to elect in this coun ty next year, to succeed Senator Linton A. Cox. But outside of Marion county, the prospects are that the republicans will elect fifteen senators and the democrats ten. This will make the senate stand a tie, each party having twenty-five members. If the republicans can elect a senator in Marion counuty, they will have twenty six to twenty-four democrats, a majority of two. Close Observation. This estimate is based on the very closest observance and study of the map and of the political conditions. In reaching these figures the republicans are given every senator that they are reasonably sure of electing as well as giving them the benefit of every doubtful senatorial district in the state. And one of the two republicans who were discussing this matter remarked that it would be practically out of the question to carry all of the doubtful districts. It would be expecting too much, he said. But if they do not carry all of the doubtful districts they stand a mighty good show of losing the legislature. . The same is true of the house. If the republicans carry Marion county and carry ' everything else that they ought to carry ? as . well as all of the doubtful districts in ". the state, they will probably have 51 members of the house a bare majority of One vote. If they lose Marion county it Is all off with them. What Outlook Is. Leaving Marion county entirely out of the consideration in this estimate, there is every reason to believe that the democrats will elect forty-nine members of the house. ' This estimate Includes only those districts that look I like they reasonably should be expected, under present conditions, to elect democratic representatives. It does not take into consideration any of the doubtful districts. : Basing the stlmate on the present conditions in the various counties,1 giv ing the republicans every representative that appears store, and giving them also the benefit of the doubt in all of the doubtful districts, the repub licans will probably elect forty-three members of the house, not counting Marlon county. i Marlon county "has eight representatives in the house. At present they are air democrats. For several years heretofore K they --' were republicans. What they will be next time Is a serious question. . '. If the democrats carry Marion county and elect the eight members this win give them 57 members of the house and the republicans 43. If the republicans carry Marion county they will have a bare 51 members in the house and the democrats will have 49. Democratic Majority. If the democrats win on this basis they will have 82 vote on taint ballot while the republicans will have OS, and the democrats will elect . a United States senator.' If the reDubUoans win on this bash they will have 77 votes on joint ballot and the democrats will have 73, and Senator Beverldge will be re-elected. These figures are not made up trout

s. 0W guesswork, but from a careful study of the lay of the land in the various counties in the state, and the two re publican , leaders who ' were discussing the matter reluctantly .. admitted that they state the true sltuaion. If he names of these two republicans could be published they would cause a sen sation, but they would at - the same time prove that they knpw what they are talking about. , 1 How to overcome ; this evident disadvantage is the task that confronts the .republicans of Indiana today, and to this task they will surely have to apply , themselves if - they expect to win at the 1910 election. This is one reason why the leaders are trying to keep the liquor question out of the next campaign. Everybody, is afraid of it. Both sides dread the issue. If the republicans declare again for county local option they will drive away a large liberal element that' tbe party will need at the polls. If the platform makes any adverse declaration it will mean the loss of the large dry element in the party, which is equally important and necessary to success. So the general impression at this time seems to be to say nothing at all on the liquor question. The local option law is on the bookslet it stay there. That seems to be the most popular plan. ' ; Mum on Booze Question. Of course, if the republicans can keep from saying anything at all on the liquor question and can at the same time tie up the democratic party in the state with the brewers, as was done in the last campaign, it is admitted that it will be easy sailing for the republicans. But the democrats are as badly scared of the liquor question as anyone else, and there is no certainty that they will listen to the lure of the brewer next year and fight hi3 battle for him. . ' Any republican, or democrat, who will take the time to sit down and make a careful study of the political conditions as they exist throughout the state today will find that the figures given above are as nearly correct as any estimate can be made at this time. MEASURE WILL BE PASSED ALREADY THE STATE DEPARTMENT HAS NOTIFIED FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS THAT TREATIES WILL BE VOID. Washington, May ' 3. Chairman Payne of the Ways and Means Committee, will ask the house next Thursday to agree upon a rule fixing July 1 as the date for taking a final rote on the tariff bill. It is asserted by bouse leaders this afternoon that they have already secured enough pledges in favor of the rule from members from the Atlantic coast, gulf and Pacific coast states, democrats as well as republicans, to insure its passage. This means that the senate and house leaders have agreed that the bill will be ready for final passage by that date. If no slip up occurs thereafter, the new tariff law will be on the statute rolls by July 4, provided, always, that the bill meets with the approval of President Taft. State Department Acts. , Coincident with the decision of the house managers to bring in this rule forcing a tariff vote on July 1, the state department has taken action which indicates a belief that the tariff bill now framing will shortly be enacted into law, .: Secretary of State Knox notified all the governments with which the United States has com mercial agreements, under section 3 of the Dingtey tariff law, of the intention of this government to abrogate these agreements. Manifestly, Secretary Knox assumes, first, that the Dingley provision for commercial treaties is to be superseded; second, that it is to be displaced in the near future by a new provision of law, which will do away with such agreements that is the maximum and minimum clause of the tariff "law, which was introduced in the senate yesterday. Clever Young Hoosier Inventor May Revolutionize the Art of War. SHOOTS WITH WIRELESS UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT AND SCIENTISTS ARE DEEPLY INTERESTED IN EXPERIMENTS HE 18 MAKING. Evansville, Ind., May 3. That the shot fired last Wednesday evening by the use of a wireless apparatus by Charles Williams, of this city, was the first of Its kind in the world, and that it may revolutionize the warfare of the whole earth is the belief of people who are studying the matter. So far as can be learned, never be fore In the history of the earth has a charge of explosives been set off by wireless waves. News of Toung Wil Hams' s experiment has been received with great comment all ovenAhe country, and his method of exploding pow der, nitroglycerin, - guncottoa or any substance which can be set off by concussion, Is declared to be an invention of international importance. A Costly -Shot. It is probable that the young inventor will soon be asked to give an experiment of his wireless apparatus in the pretence of officials from the United States War department. The charge that he used last Wednesday evening and which weighed but three ounces, he claims cost him 40. He carried the explosive three miles above the city and placed them in the top of an old tree. Then returning to his home he began to work his wireless apparatus and In a second there was an explosion that was beard for many miles away and shook the city and led many people to believe that an earthquake had taken place. Williams says if he had better instruments with which to work he could set off explosives as far awsy from this city as Chicago. The instruments he now uses he made himself and they are very crude. . Young Williams refuses to tell what his explosives contain, but he is confident his secret will win for him both fame and fortune in a very short time. He is now arranging to dynamite an old Indian mound at Newberg, Ind., ten miles east of here. ; The mound is 'several hundred feet high and is supposed to contaiu relics left there by either the mound builders or the Indians. . Hundreds of people of this city will go to Newberg to see Williams blow up the mound by working a wireless telegraph device, which he will set up a few miles from the mound. Williams is receiving letters from scientific men from all parts of tbe country asking him for more definite informa tion about his inventions. fiE SPREAD fJOTr Advise the Roofer Got From His In Apaeentiee Days.
