It .So spoke the news editor as the reporter left the office of the Palladium in quest of a story on which to feed the ever-hungry press. V At the Twenty-second street entrance of the park, the new improvements bespoke of good conditions within. The board of works realises what a good Investment the money is, which is expended wisely in the improvement of the park, both as a pleasure ground for the city and as an attraction to the visitors who flock to the Glen in the summer months. Soon there will be a cement walk and curbing from Twenty-second street to the Main street entrance, and the street for the same distance will be macadamized. At the Twenty-second street entrance there is a new grove of trees and a large variety of shrubs, just presented to the park by Herbert Bell. The planting was all planed by Mr. Bell, and many of the shrubs are very valuable,' having been imported from Europe. Well Cared For. Within, the park showed careful attention and the reporter learned later from Mr. Klopp. the superintendent, that the leaves had all been burned from the ground during the dry fall months, leaving the grass perfectly free to make a fine early growth. Three hundred tulips were in bloom, making a splendid showing, and the.' drives were all In good condition. The benches and swings are also in their accustomed places. Seventeen Years Ago l trca' Quaker Institution Organized the Indiana CoHsss; Press Association. PRESIDENT KELLY WAS THE FIRST PROMOTER The Movemenet Has Grown Rapidly and Now All off thr Leading Institutions in tha, State Have Adopted It (Earlham Prase Club.) ' History repeats Itself and Earlham to now represented in the Indiana Inter ' collegiate "Press Association Seves t teen years ago Earlham was Instns ' mental ia forming the Indiana College) - n Association, aad the year before she was one of the colleges who fol-. lowed the lead of Michigan Unlvcrs-! ity in the formation of the Western, College Press Association. 1802 was s; memorable year at Earlham. and the achievements of that year are still' dear to the hearts of the Earlham alunions. Not only did can nam gata, admission to the . Indiana latercolleg-1 late Association and the lntercollegiate Oritorical Association, but she was prime mover with De Panw in estab lishing the Indiana College Press Association, which was founded in pallor I of the English hotel. Indianapo.; lis, on March 11. The Quaker representative. A. W. Newlin. TJ2 now on, of the editors of a New Orleans paper. wase elected vice president of the as-' soclatlon. and the Earlhamlte was fort one year the official organ of the state' association. One of the most interesting facts concerning the development of the idea of a state association ot college editors. Is the fact that the. earliest record of tho idea was that of the advocacy of President R. 1 Kel--ly. at that time editor of the Earlhamtte. However. It. was not nntlt; several years had passed, and Presi " dent Kelly was an alumnue that We idea brought fruit ' 1 Looks for Strength. With a foundation of this character on which to build, the Earlham College Press Club expects to be a strong, aad permanent organisation whltis will cover fully the newspapers s ; well as the general interests of the college. On the . seventh day of May ' she will send her representatives to' the state meeting, held at Indiana UnK versity, the .program for which, in-; dnde a banquet in the Commons of the Student Building; addresses by Samoa! O. Blythe. of the Saturday Evening Post and Congressman Barnard, aad, discussions by the- delegates from the different colleges. , The Press Clubs Of the state which are now members of the organisation, are those of Indiana University, Purdue University, Wabash College, De Psuw University. Butler College and Earlham College. Hanover and Rose Polytechnic have both applied for admission, aad tho nrobabflities are that they will be elected, making eight members la the state organisation. The president et the I. I. P. A. is Aubrey U Hawkins, a graduate of the local high school, and a prominent student in Indiana University. The possibilities of sn Intercollegiate club composed of hustling men. such as bold membership In the Pre Clubs of the state, are apparently onlimited, and it is expected to give the educational Institution of Indiana a unique position among the institutions of other states. The Individual dobs accomplish much la their own college. The Indiana University club has promoted torn very Important student activities, such as the organisation of the Howling Host, which follows the most effective rooting plans ever carried into execution. The Wabash dn' publishes the Bachelor, the semi-weekly of the college Journalistic field. DsPauw and Pardee Press Club men are very very prominent In the publication of the dailies of those two institutions, and the Earlham club has extensive plans which will be carried oet before the first year of Its existence has been completed. One of tho activities of Interest to the whole college, which it is now Interested In. Is the preparation of a directory containing the names and statement of various lines of interest of all men who are considering entering Earlham next year. This directory will be need by the athletic coach In lining np his men; by the Press Club In casting about for suitable men for the organisation; bv the Earlhamlte Is procuring the names of Freshmen of literary or Journalistic ability, and the heads of departments In singling out men who am interested in their line of work. , The Press Club has representative on each of the three Richmond papers., and the news editor of one of these' papers was active In the formation of the Earlham Club. k The oOcers of the Earlsssa Press Crab are: Pan!
