Chicago, April 23. A mad fight in the wheat pit began at the opening of the board of trade today. Brokers rep resenting Patten went into the mar ket determined to force the price of May wheat back' to $1.25 mark. Five minutes after the gong had sounded for the opening, the bears were in rout and May wheat advanced in leaps to SI. 24, a clear gain of 34 cents over last night's close. Then the bears took a turn at ham' mering the market. The wild selling of May was begun and the price drop ped, as rapidly as it had gone up, to $1.20. It was cyclonic day on the board of trade and May corn followed a slump in wheat. A loss of three cents in corn, equivalent to a ten cent drop in wheat in ordinary circumstances, plunged the whole exchange Into a pandemonium.
