ANCIENT ROME. " It Csuld Net Compare In 8plendor With Some Modern Capitals, ' Rome, eren in tae times of its greatcat splendor, was poor In comparison with the modern world. Even In the second century after Christ, when It teed as metropolis 'at the bead of an Immense empire, Rome was smaller. less wealthy, less imposing than a great metropolis of Europe or of Amer ica. Some sumptuous public edifices, beautiful prlrate nouses that is all the splendor of, the metropolis of the tnpire. - Moreover, the palaces of tbe Caesars n the Palatine are a grandiose ruin that stirs tbe artist and makes tbe philosopher think, but if ene sets him elf to measure tbem, to conjecture from the remains tbe proportions of tbe entire edifices, be does not conjure op buildings that rival, large modern construction. . The palace of Tiberius, for example, rose above a street only two meters wide, less than seven feet, an alley like those where today in Italian cities live only the most miser able inhabitants. We have pictured to evrselvea tbe Imperial banquets of ancient Re me as functions of unheard f splendor; if Nero or Blagafcalus could came te life and see the dining room of a great hotel in Paris or New York, 1 - resplendent with light, wtth crystal, wtth silver, be would admire It as Tar more beaotifoi than the halls In which be gave bis Imperial feast. Think bow poor were the ancients In artiacial light! WILL ASSIST III AFTERMATH MOVE City Officials Endorse the Plan Proposed by the Society to Devote One Day to General Cleaning. ALL OVER COUNTRY PLAN IS APPROVED Especially in the Far Western States Is the Municipal Cleaning Project Meeting With Favor. Official sanction of the plan of the Aftermath Society for a yard cleaning day has been given by the board of public works. The society expects to arouse general interest in tbe affair and it will become an annual event. It was tried for the first time last year and was a success, although it raine 1 on the day set for the inspection of yards and streets. In a letter to the civic improvement committee of the society,' the board of works says: Board's Communication. "The board of public works Is in entire sympathy with the movejnent in augurated by the Aftermath, looking to the future beautifying of our city, and approve of the setting apart of a day for that purpose, and will lend aid in any way possible to Insure the success of cleaning-upvday. Respectfully, "C. W. MERRILL, "Clerk of Board. :"By order of Board of Public Works." Aftermath Communication. "Civic improvement has reached its perfection, not in the east nor in cul tured New England." writes the mayor of Lexington, Wy., "but out among the Rockies there is a city that is destined to be the most beautiful in the world, and that is the city of Denver. Co-operation must exist, there, or the people of Denver could not have accomplished what they have. Their streets are smooth -and clean, and it is the best lighted city in the world. . Thousands of electric lights are placed along the principal streets, and tbe unsightly telegraph and telephone poles have been replaced by beautiful ornamental poles, which are very pleasing to the eye. Electric fountains, with thousands of lights are in operation during the summer months. Let us instill into the minds of our people that he who lives for himself alone, lives in vain, but ho who lives that future generations may be prepared to live better, has rendered to mankind some service." An extensive and earnest tree plant ing movement was inaugurated in Chi cago a couple of weeks ago. Mayor McClellan of New York, says: Something more is needed to make the happy city than health and wealth, and wisdom. The city healthy, the city wealthy and the city wise may excite satisfaction, complaisance and pride, but it is the city beautiful that compels and retains the love of her citizens." Richmond can well be called the city beautiful, if all persons would only clean all trash and weeds from their yards and plant instead, flowers and shrubs. Trees are incomparably the greatest single feature in the landscape beauty of one's home. Tree lovers frequently pay as high as a thousand dollars or more for single transplanted specimens. Not only do they add grace and beauty to the surroundings, but they are a tangible real estate asset a substantial legacy from the past and a worthy bequest to the future. Our homes are not the houses in which we sleep they are the cities in which we live. Poor Stuff. The Servant Tou got cheated when you bought that chiny vase, mum. The Mistress How cheated? No' Resih Day or Night "I would lay awake for hours without any apparent cause, or dream terrible; dreams which would bring on extreme spells of nervousness. After taking Dr. Miles Nervine and Tonic for awhile I could sleep well,

and the nervous spells have left' me." MISS ALMA HUG, R. R, No. 4, Canal Dover, Ohio. Without sleep the nervous system soon becomes a wreck, and the healthful activity of all the organs obstructed.. Restful, body-building sleep accompanies the use of Dr. Miles' Nervine because it soothes the irritable nerves, and restores nervous energy. When taken a few days according to directions, the most restless sufferer will find sleep natural and healthful. Get a bottle from your druggist. Henry Miller's superb production of William Vaughn Moody's virile and vividly American drama, has passed into stage history as a record-breaker in every way. It achieved a brilliant success from its very first performance, brokej all previous records in point of financial success, received more unanimously critical approbation than all the rest of the plays combined produced in New York last season, played over six hundred performances on Broadway, at the Princess and Daly's theaters and then was brought back to the Academy of Music later in the year where it played to capacity business for more than six weeks. Altogether, "The Great Divide," during its differ ent New York engagements, was seen by almost three Quarters of a million people. "The Great Divide" comes to the Gennett theater April 21 under the direction of Henry Miller. "A Broken Idol." Not since the days when his production of "Isle of Spice" set the theatrical world agog with Its lavish splendor has Manager B. C. Whitney given the patrons of musical comedy such a decided novelty as in his presentation of "A Broken Idol" which will be seen at the Gennett theater on April 20. In fact it is Questionable whether his latest success will not totally eclipse the magnificent record made by his earlier efforts. The piece which is by HaT Stephens. Harry x Williams and Egbert Van Alstyne has enjoyed an unprecedented run of over 300 performances at Mr. Whitney's Van Buren street playhouse. In Chicago and comes to Richmond enveloped in the halo of its metropolitan success. This means that the original cast, headed by Otis Harlan the Inimitable comedian, the same chorus and production which contributed to the Chicago success of this musical entertainment will be. seen here. This is one of the few instances in which a production has been taken intact from a producing center and sent on tour. . FILIAL DUTY. An Example From the Chinese sf Good Littlo Boy. In China the "Book ef Filial Doty' has toeen employed to Instruct tbe young for the last 2,500 years. In it are twenty-four examples for good boys. What these examples are like may be understood from the story of Wu Meng, example No. 30. Wu Meng. it seems, ' was very obedient to his parents. On day at tbe age of eight he noticed with paia that the mosquitoes annoyed bis parents while they were trying to sleep. Presently he hit upon a plan to rescue them. Says tbe author of this classic: "The buzsing of the mosquitoes sounds like 'ying ylng,' and their united hum Is almost equal to thunder. His tired parents are reclining on their bed, their countenances already sunk In' slumber. Legions of mosquitoes fiercely attack them, alternately retreating and advancing. The insects disturb tbe dreaming sleepers, and with annoyance they toss from side to side. "Wu sees them sucking his parents' blood, which causes his heart to grieve. His flesh, he thinks, can be easily pierced, but that of his parents is bard to penetrate. Lying on the bed, he threw off his clothes, and soon, feeling; the pain of their attacks, he cried, 'I bare no dread of you. nor have you any reason to fear me! " 'Although I have a fan. I will not use it, nor will I strike you with my hand. I will lie very quiet and let you gorge to the full.' " Thus did tbe parents ef Wu Meng get a chance to sleep in peace. Tfc Surfs OflJffe.
