Last evening, a dark, raJciah-looking

craft, was seen by the sentries on the

walls of the river fortreas. just erected

as a protection to the First ward, in

the event of war, from the combined

fleets of the Mikado, to stealthily

creep up the peaceful Whitewater.

"Hist!" hissed one sentry to another

Then, gently at first, but sturdily

growing in volume until it reached the

uproar that all pirate choruses are re

quired to reach, there came the following from the decks of the strange, Rob

ert Louis Stevenson-looking craft:

Krewe's Korua. Kamsin Kickup Kolomoko.

Kopped a Kup of Kokokolo

Then blew a Bunch of Breezes into

Yelled he: 'Up with the Jolly Roger A a hunch to every codger

"Kaptain Kolomoko, with his motley

landing party, who charged over Newman's Hill to a cocoa cola joint. After

one drug store had been cleaned out, the invaders returned to their ship,

named. "The Saturnalia,' which turned

its nose to the . south. I have just

been heard near 'Lamb's Landing' in

This morning the agitated citizens of Happy Hollow found the pirate land

ELECTION MAY BE CONTESTED III CASS

Claimed That Too Great a

Vote Is Shown.

Logansport, Ind., April 9. It is probable that the local option election in Cass county will be contested. It is charged there was a too great in

crease, in the- vote in certain precincts

at Loganaport. In certain districts more votes were cast than there are voters and in these precincts-the ma

jority for the wets was large enough

to win for the entire county. An investigation will be made before it" is decided to enter a legal contest.

Because t there was no general

movement among the p rotes tan t

ehurches of the city to observe Good FViday, the public schools were not dis

missed .this, morning, as has been the custom for several years. Supt. Mott

stated the board has ruled that when

ever' the churches seek to observe the day with services, the pupils shall be .permitted to attend. ; . The ' day was observed with appropriate 'ceremonies by the. Catholic churches and schools. Special services have been held at the churches throughout the week, which is one of te most devout periods for followers rJ that faith.' Special services were also held today at St. Paul's Episcopal church. - : Observance of Day. Good Friday commemorates the passion and death of the Christ and the services are very solemn. Black vestments are worn and the church offers prayers for all conditions of men throughout the world. . The crucifix is unveiled and this ceremony is followed by. the celebration of the mass of the presanctif led. In the afternoon at 3 o'clock, a service commemorates the death of the Saviour. , In the evening a sermon on the Good Friday will be preached. . On Saturday morning there will be a special service in which the Paschal candle and holy water are blessed. This Is followed by the reading of the Litany of the Saints and the reading of the prophecies, after which., the mass anticipating the resurrection is celebrated. At the Gloria of this mass the bells are rung and theorgan again peals forth in joyous, strains. This practically concludes the services of Holy Week and the preparations for the dawning'' of the joyous festival of Easter. .., ; . ' ... : -;-

Work on the ' construction of North West Second street between the railroad divisions has been . begun this week. The contractor was forced to remain idle during the winter on account of weather conditions. He has put a large force of men at work now and expects to complete the job as soon as possible. The roadway is to be gravel. Sidewalks and gutters are to be installed. The, steel wort of the superstructure will be completed as soon as possible.

Dr. W. H. Fisher, the medical officer of health to the Washington District Council, ' in his annual report traces an outbreak of diphtheria which occurred in the Raynham district to a batch of school cooks that had not been disinfected after a similar epidemic about six months previously. This time the schools were closed, the premises thoroughly disinfected and sprayed, and all the books in use

at one school in which the disease

originated destroyed.

Sergeant McGonigle. of Chicago's police automobile squad, thinks that much overspeeding of motorists is due to smoky anl smelly cars ahead. The sergeant,, addressing the court in a recent case, said: "Your honor, If I may be permitted to say a word, I believe smokng automobiles are worse than speeding automobiles, and that they are also the cause ot many accidents and much of the speeding done by chauffeurs.; If a man were driving a dirty, smoking automobile ahead of me and I had to breathe the fnmes of the gas ' and smoke, I believe ' I would resort to speeding to pass the machine and get some fresh air." .
