OPINION GIVEN THAT EVERY ACTION TAKEN FROM NOW ON MUST BE UNDER TERMS OF THE NEW ACT.

SPECIALSFAT WHITE MACKEREL ENGLISH CHANNEL SMOKED WHITE FISH. HALIBUT. 4 HAOLEY BROS.

(Special Correspondent.) Indianapolis, April 8. The city attorneys of Fort "Wayne, South Bend, Goshen and several other cities of the

state came to Indianapolis and had a talk with Corporation Counsel Matson about the new Thornton paving law, which was passed by the last session of the legislature, and which has been causing the city, officials of the various cities a great deal of trouble. The attorneys did not know what to do about 1 the city;, improvements

that have been ordered in the various

cities and which are now under way

They wished to talk the matter over

with Mr, Matson. The fact is that Mr.

Matson has .been having as much

trouble with the new law and has been sitting up nights with it about as much as have the attorneys of other

cities and all he could do was to give

the visitors his opinion. Terms of the Law. ' He told them that it was his opinion that . the new law means that every step taken hereafter in making street improvements must be taken, under the new law, and that this applies to all improvements now under way as well as to all that are contracted for hereafter. This, of course,' makes a bad mix-up in street Improvements, for neither a city or a contractor can

tell just what ' effect this change is going to have on the cost of the work. Therefore, in this city, many - con

tracts have been given up by the con

tractors rather than take the chance

of losing through the changes that would be made necessary by the new law. The city has given the contractors the option of going ahead with the work or showing . up their con

tracts, and some of them have taken

the latter course.

A suit is to be filed in the courts here within the next day or two to get a judicial' decision on the law. It will be a friendly suit in which a contractor will seek an injunction against the carrying out of the provisions of the law. When this suit gets all the way through the courts "then the officials of the cities will know where they stand, but not before.
