it comes to filling important public offices. The president thus far has not passed out much patronage to republi

cans whose political accumen resulted

in the defeat of Governor Andrew I.

Harris for re-election in Ohio last fall. Although there is something coming to the boys who fought and bled in the

trenches in the Buckeye state, it is

not coming with a rush, however. But the president on Saturday picked an ex-Ohioan as the next governor of Arizona. His name is Richard E. Sloan, who is now an associate justice of the territorial court, and lives in Prescott. Judge Sloan came here in response to a request from the president, and his transfer from the bench to the executive office of the territory was practically arranged for. Went West 25 Years Ago. The prospective governor of the territory went to Arizona from Hamilton. Ohio, about 25 years ago. He got a diploma from the Cincinnati Law school, and after a brief sojourn in Hamilton, went West. In 1899 President Harrison appointed him a United States Judge for the territory, and he was reappointed by Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt. 'For three years during the second

his place was occupied by a democrat. He has the distinction, however, of

Judge that ever sat on the bench. Kibbey Was Left Out. Judge Sloan will succeed John H. Kibbey, formerly of Richmond, Ind., who was nominated for a second term by President Roosevelt in February, but whom the senate did not confirm on account of political complications and opposition from one of the republican factions of the territory. Senators Dick and Burton called ai the White House together for the first time since they have been colleagues in the senate. They went in response to an invitation from the president to discuss certain state patronage matters. Owing to the pressure of Easter tourists Mr. Taft was unable to give them all the time he had anticipated, and after 15 minutes of conference he decided that the question of Ohio patronage was too complicated to be disposed of in a short time, and asked their return at an early date next week to resume the discussion.

The Richmond nest of Owls had a big time last evening in their newly furnished club rooms in the Luken building. A : class of twenty-eight candidates took the Initiatory work, which was witnessed by three of the supreme officers of the order, Philip Kammn of Elwood, supreme trustee; J. P. Mullaly, of Indianapolis, supreme ice president, and James C. Braxton, of this city. The nest, prior to the admission of he new members last evening, had a membership of 156. At the present time it is one of the strongest organi-

new club rooms are among the most attractive in the city, $300 having recently been expended in new furnishings. Roll call was observed last evening and reports of the officers were heard. Yesterday afternoon Mr. Nammn and Mr. Mullaly were shown about the city in an automobile, loaned by the Westcott Carriage company. Mr. Mullaly is one of the most prominent diamond dealers west of Pittsburg.

Leo A. Zeyen Smashes Records Right and Left in Distribution Test.

Leo A. Zeyen, clerk at the postoffice can claim the honor of being one of the efficient clerks in Uncle Sam's service besides being the best at the post office. In a distribution, of mail examination yesterday at the post of

fice, he established a record for efficiency and speed excelling his previous record made a year ago, which was the best ever made at the office up to the present time. Postmaster J. A. Spekenhier who made the examination states Zeyen had 705 cards to distribute. There were 105 separations to be made and the test was by no means an easy one. He handled every card correctly, making a perfect score. Last year he made but one mistake. His average yesterday was 44 cards distributed per minute. His record will be forwarded to the postal officials for approval. Last year he received a letter of commendation from the postal authorities for his efficiency. -
