Southern Racing Plant te Have Twenty Day Meeting. A twenty days' racing meet with a betting ring in operation, will be opened at "Big Tim" Sullivan's new track just outside Jacksonville. Fla March 20. The inaugural date was originally set for March 1, bnt the contractors were unable to complete the plant on schedule time. Next year. however, it is planned to start the meeting immediately after the holtdays. It Is expected that in time Jacksonville will become the racing center of the south. Working with this idea In mind, stabling accommodations for 600 horses will be provided for next year. At this time there are quarters for only half that number. BENNETT TO QUIT AMATEURS. Former Champion Single Sculler Will Join Professional Ranks Shortly. Harry S. Bennett of the Springfield (Mass.) Boat club, winner of the senior singles amateur championsbip in the national regatta in Philadelphia in 1907, has announced that he has de cided to leave the amateur ranks and to go Into the game professionally. Bennett will try to secure a professional race with Eddie Durnan. the Canadian champion. In case Daman's proposed race with Frank Greer of Boston falls through. BALFOUR MAKES APPEAL HE DECLARES TO A CROWDED MEETING OF EXCITED ENGLISH MEN THAT EIGHT SHIPS MUST BE BUILT. London, April 1. A, crowded meeting, typical of those being held everywhere in England in the Interests of a great navy assembled at the build hall yesterday afternoon, under the auspic es of the London chamber of com merce. The lord mayor of London acted as chairman and was supported by several hundred men prominent in financial, commercial and legislative circles. The speeches all were of one tenor and the sentiments of the meeting were accurately voiced by Sir James Fortes que-Flannery in this sentence: "Great Britain can only walk In peace with Germany provided oar preparations for naval defense are absolutely and beyond suspicion superior to hers." - Sentiment for Bigger Navy. A. J. Balfour made a stirring appeal for the Immediate laying down: of four additional battleships in which he foreshadowed that the naval program for 1910 would have to ber for eight ships. Irrespective of the four condi tional vessels, in which case Great Britain, unless the government yielded to the popular demand, faced the necessity of building a round dozen battleships daring: the coming year. Mr. Balfour dwelt with emphasis upon the fact that both .the United States and Germany were expending more than Great Britain this year on naval construction. Resolutions pledging the govern ment all the financial support necessary to provide immediately four ex tra battleships were passed by accla mation. . ,. . ' - City Statistics . Deaths and Funerals. LITTLE Mrs. Emma J. Little, aged 77 years, one of the best known women of the city, died yesterday afternoon at 1 her home, 28 North Eleventh street. Mrs. LitUe had been ill but a' short ; time, and a rather sad coincident about -her death1 was, that it occurred on her birthday. She is suvived by her hus- ( band, Joslah M. Little, and two daughters. . The funeral will be held Sat'orday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the .residence. The burial will be in Eariham cemetery. Funeral services and burial will be private. .
