PROMOTERS HAD DISPLAY CAR IN RICHMOND FOR TWO WEEKS RECENTLY AND SEVERAL PEOPLE BUY LAND.
'New Chicago," the Texas town exploited by the Giant Construction e"my, of Chicago, which kept a car
jd with a display in this city for
two weeks and sought to interest lo-
tosi - residents to invest in land, is branded as a fake by The Palestine Daily Visitor, a newspaper printed at Palestine. Texas. The town is in Antdeirson county, the same county in which the advertisements of the Giant Construction company said "New Chicago" Is to be found. When the car , was 4n this city, the agents made an alluring offer and It is probable induced several local persons to invest C What Paper Says. ' The Palestine Visitor says of the cotapany and its project: Every few days we receive a cora'ttsnication from some one in the northern stateB who has been humbugC4 Into buying a lot In "New Chicago," a town that has its only existence a paper. k ' tltM, "New Chicago," and the worst . tbjjtg about it Is that it is partly true. Tesnyson's Grand-Mother said: "A Us that Is half the truth, is the meanest lie of all." or something like that, nC so it is you don't know where to meet such falsehood. The book is full of misleading pictures and statennts, and if the fool-killer were not abroad in the land would deceive no ''With this book are copies of the contracts of the "Giant Construction CcC: of Chicago" for sale of town lot In- New Chicago and ten acres of land with each lot. ' "n Get Many . Letters. There are numerous letters to and from parties who have purchased, from which it appears that the company had sold up to Nov. 1908, about 1,513 1 lots, the purchase price being $10.00 down and $10.00 for IS ensuing months thus realizing on first money 125,130 and a like sum each succeeding month. Now to furnish each of these purchasers with a lot and ten acres of ground, would take 25,130 acres of land beside the land for the town-site. .As the Giant Construction Co., managed by-Mr S. A. Buffington of Chicago, has only purchased somewhere near 1,500 acres of land in this countywe -would like to know how they WW make it go around. A great many people have been induced to come i-i here through this : eneme and while many are greatly pleased with the climate and country and see the possibilities offering here for cheap homes, many are bitterly disappointed, at the humbug put off upon them. There is no such town as New Chicago, and it is the duty of every honest person to let this fact be known and stop this "giant" imposition on ' : the too credulous . who are seeking bomes in Texas.

Rat exterminators had to be engaged the other day by the Leeds (England) Public Library; the chief librarian was openly defied by a great rat, and the women assistants were in a constant state of terror.

PUPILS ENJOY A VACATION
PROGRAM FOR JOINT MEETING OF STATE TEACHERS' ASSOCIATIONS EXCELLENT ONE PROMINENT SPEAKERS.
The majority of the Richmond teachers who will attend the meetings
of the Northern and Southern Indiana
Teachers' association at Indianapolis April 1, 2 and 3, left early this morning. A few wanted to be on the ground early, so they left last evening. Headquarters for the teachers were opened yesterday, in the hotel Denison.
Preparations to entertain about 6,000
teachers have been made by the two associations. The available hotel accommodations have been spoken for and it is probable that additional rooms will have to be secured in the Y. W. C. Ak building and private residences for the late arrivals. The local schools closed last even
ing. The two days vacation added to
the regular Saturday and Sunday va
cation appeals to the students very
much, as it will be the only vacation during the spring term. la of Great Merit.
The two teachers' associations are holding their meetings at the same
time this year, as it is believed by the educators that it is more advisable. The Southern association will meet in the Caleb Mills Hall and the Northern association in Tomlinson Hall. The program this year is of unusual excellence, including addresses by several of the most prominent educators of the state and nation, among whom are: Brander Matthews of Columbia University, the literary critic; Dr. Franklin S. Giddings, of Columbia University, the sociologist; Dr. William Lyon Phelps, Yale's great platform orator;
Arthur B. Morrill, president of the New Haven (Conn.) Normal school; Judge Benjamin Lindsay, of the Den
ver Juvenile court; Dr. John G. Cbui
ter; Dr. Elmer Ellsworth Brown, United States commissioner of Education, Washington. D. C; Joseph W. Folk,
Governor of Missouri, who is to be in
troduced by Thomas R. Marshall;
Samuel M. Ralston of Lebanon, and
Annie Fellows Johnston, author of
"The Little Colonel," series of stories
for girls.

NEW PHILLIPS. All Week High Class Vaudeville.
The New Phillips. The big four has arrived. Not the Big Four railroad, nor the big four general store, but the real and original big four who know how to act in a way that walks off with sweep stakes. Jarrell & Co.. .are featuring "A Glorious Time" and if you feel like having a glorious time in this gloomy weather you should take a little walk down to the New Phillips. It will cheer you up and put a new face on things. - r The other two strong acts are the barrel jumpers in a novelty act and Fritz Christiana in an amusing musical act Both of these acts are on a par with the others of the same nature which have been here and everybody says that they were good.
"A Broken Idol." Otis Harlan, cavorting about in the character of Doc Whatt, is one of the chief delights in "A Broken Idol," the latest and greatest musical success. Harlan is a schooled farceur. He knows how to make fun and how to keep his audience in a roar. He is doing this all the time. But while Mr. Harlan comes in for a big share of attention, he is by no means alone in his glory. There are other clever players in the cast, who aid and abet him in his endeavors to cheer all. They are players who can lay claim to being comedians in their own right, and among these may be found Otto Hoffman. George Rifiards, David Andrada, Carrie Perkins, Birdie Beaumont, Margaret Robinson and. last but not lease, dainty and sweet Alice Torke, the prima donna. And the choruswell, it is said to be the prettiest that has ever been seen, and a constant joy. Gus Schlke, who staged the production, has evolved some startling pictures, to say nothing of the surprises in the way of new features. There is a great green dragon that Is suddenly . transformed into a dozen pretty girls and the balloon ascension in the last act, when Miss Torke soars over the heads of the audienc. that is said to be the novelty of novelties. The"show is brim full of good things and may be said to be a vertiable mine of fun and pleasure.
leading lady with the People's Stock at Philadelphia for three seasons, and now leading lady with the North Bros, comedians, which comes to the Gennett for one week, starting Monday, April 12, with matinees daily, is one of the real clever leading women. Miss Goodwin is a very beautiful woman and is considered one of the very best leading ladies in the repertoire business. She has had eight years' experience both with Stock and road companies and is a great favorite wherever she has appeared, from a social standing as well as an artistic point of view. Miss Goodwin has the distinction of being known as the best dressed stock woman in the theatrical business. he has a beautiful gown for each and every act, and never wears the same gown twice during the week engagement. It requires six large trunks to carry her wardrobe, which is the envy of the fair sex. A small idea of the size of her wardrobe can be attained when it is known she carries twenty-six pair of shoes and slippers to properly dress her parts.
The climate of Scotland is such that waterproof garments are usually required more or less during every month of the year. The average annual rainfall is about forty-five inches.
