One of these islands. Castle Rock, has been known aince 1796; Fire island has been known since 1883 while the, third one. Perry island, rose from the sea about the time of the San Fran cisco earthquake, in 1906. According to a letter to science, the Island has now sunk. . , The Japanese mission of architects, which is visiting- Europe to obtain ideas for the new houses of Parliament in Japan, art going to atndy the earthquake effects in Italy and try to involve laws from which they will be able to build legislative houses in stone, in spite of the predisposition of their country to earthquakes. Their new buildings are to cost about $25,000,000, so they say they must not allow themselves to be surprised by geological cataclysms. The cashew nut tree (Anacaridnm ocidentale) yields several products. One edible part is the swollen, pear shaped stalk (peduncle) which supports the nut. AT SESSION OF THE BOARD MANY PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS UNDER NEW LAW'S TERMS, HAVE BEEN ORDERED. William Mills was appointed substi tute fireman at a meeting of the board of public works today. Mills was av member of the department some time ago and resigned. He begins his du ties April 1. The' board also ordered the purchase of 200 feet of chemical hose and new linoleum for the floor oC the bed rooms of the city hall department. This improvement has been needed badly for some time.
