MRS. FISH AGAINST WOMAN SUFFRAGE
New York Society Leader
Guides Sisters Away from Mire of Politics.
SEX EQUALITY IMPOSSIBLE
PROMINENT WOMAN 8TATE8
THAT FEMININITY'S WORK IN
LIFE 18 TO BE FOUND IN THE
HIGHER PLANE.
New .York, Feb. 5. The national league for the civic education of women, an anti-suffrage organization
which has been doing educational work, by means of lectures and talks
this winter, has a new ally in Mrs.
Stuyvesant Fish, who has just joined
the organization.
Mrs. Fish is strongly opposed to woman suffrage. Giving her views to Mrs. Gilbert Jones, chairman of the
executive committee of the league, to
day, she said:
"So much is being said in. favor of woman suffrage that, as you ask my opinion, I must give it truly, even ac
the risk of appearing to disparage my own sex. Far from it. I think' too well of women to imagine they can be
benefited by mixing in the mire of
politics. Should Move in Higher Sphere.
"They always have, ever should.
move in a higher sphere and deal in
better and more lasting things than
the election of this one or that other
to office. In the first place, we can
not, and ought not, to go against nature. From the time of Adam and Eve
men and women have occupied different positions in life, and have discharg
ed different duties, and this we can not
alter.
"One of the main points raised by the suffragettes is that a woman has
no control over her own property.
However this may have been years
ago, aucVis not the case here in New
York, nor generally throughout the
United States. Besides this, a woman can have the advice of the ablest men
in the country just because she is a
woman and alone. "Were she to meet them as equal in the struggle for existence ner position would be far worse, even if blessed, or cursed, by a vote. She could not then hope for what she now gets so largely freely through the chivalry of educated men toward our sex, - Women Can't Do Men's Work. "Another argument for the suffrage is that with It women would get better salaries and that where they do men's work they should receive men's pay. This last proposition is but fair equally efficient labor is entitled to equal wages but is it possible for a woman to do the same work as man, day in and day out, in good weather
and in foul, throughout the year?

Said a witness once who appeared before Justice Maule in London: "You
may believe me or not, but I have
stated- not a word that is false. I have
been .wedded to truth from infancy.'
"Yes," replied the Judge, "but how
long have you' been a widower?"

The government of Canada has determined upon a policy, of complete restrictions for her remaining colonies of beavers. Their near extinction was threatened and only a most rigid enforcement of the present wise laws can prevent the extinction . of this wonderful fur bearer.

North E Street Disgrace To Thoroughfare.
CROOKED AS A DOG'S TAIL
O, those poles. Never was a set of
more misshapen timbers selected to disgrace a public street in any city than the ones that are used to support the new trolley wire on Noith H street. These poles were put up by the Terre Haute, Indianapolis & Eastern traction company. They are unpainted and about as crooked as ever trees manage to grow. Some resemble the letter S and others have the appearance of a broken backed I.

Smoking has been under discussion in the Anglican church synod at Bendigo. One member wanted the temperance pledge extended so as to ban tobacco as well as alcohol. Canon Brydges warned the proposer that he would have the whole female population up In arms against him. Every wife knew that the pipe was her husband's best friend. It kept him at home and away from the hotel. Opposition to smoking was frequently a case of sour grapes. Either the objector had not the physique of a smoker or the necessary genial temperament. He was sometimes a person who had tried to smoke but with only partial success.
