ELVCDLLOOGH SAYS POLICE LAW GOES States the Metropolitan Featuresis Doomed Both Parties Opposing It.

Effects fourteen cities I ' . ' - Republican support expect, id because mayors of most of cities are republicans and are benefited.

Palladium Bureau, Indianapolis, Jan. 21. Senator McCuIlough, who introduced the bill for the repeal of the fenetropolitan police law says the bill Is almost certain of passage because both parties wish the law wiped off the books. He points out that it was part of the Democratic state platform that this law should be repealed and the appointing power returned to the hands of the mayor and common councils of the cities affected. He also points out that in ten of the fourteen towns that are now working under the metropolitan police law the mayor is a Republican. Therefore, he says, it will be to the interest of the Republicans to repeal the law, because in these .eleven towns the may"or will have the power to name Republican police boards and thus assure these cities Republican control tt the police department. 14 Cities Affected. The fourteen cities affected are AnHerson, Elkhart, Elwood, Hammond, Jeffersonville, Kokomo, Lafayette, Logansport, Marion, Michigan . City,

The only ones of these cities that have a Democratic mayor are Lafayette, New Albany, Jeffersonville and Richmond. All the rest have Republican mayors. And yet there is a rumor that the Republicans are likely to caucus on the measure and seek to make it a party fight pure and simple in order to defeat the repeal bill. At least that was the word given out last night by one of the Republican Senate leaders. Challenge Was Made. "The Democrats made the repeal of the Metropolitan police law a party measure by placing it in their platform," he said, "and this makes it necessary for, the Republicans to except the challenge and fight it. It may get through the House all right, but it will not pass the Senate." One Republican Senator, however, said the repeal bill will pass the Senate and that some of the Republicans will not be bound by any caucus agreement to oppose it.

LOCAL OEHTISTS HAD BfST BEWARE Thieves Are Operating in Hamilton.

Local dentists had best beware. It has not been so long since thieves have visited local dental offices that they have forgotten the occasion. The thieves were heard from last at HamS llton, Ohio, where they robbed one office of material valued at $75. Another office was visited and 925 worth of material taken. Just as here the robbers entered by means of a skeleton key and made their getaway without leaving any clue. -

THE THEATER

THEATRICAL. CALENDAR. GENNETT. All Week Aubrey Stock Co. NEW PHILLIPS. All Week High Class Vaudeville.

Otis Skinner's latest success will be the attraction at the Gennett theater Jan. 25. A novel by Balzac provided the groundwork for the play in which Otis Skinner will be seen here. To the devotee of Balzac or even to the ordinary reader, his romance of "Menage de Oarcon" might seem the least possible of his works to afford the germ of a play. All critics of today from Saintbury down, pronounce Bal

zac the most modern of French fic

tion writers of his decade. So it remained for M. Emile Fabre to utilize the last hundred pages of "Menage de

Garcon" for a play. As produced at

the Theater National de l'Odeon, in 1903. It achieved a run of four con

secutive months. M. Oemier who

played the dominating part of Philippe Bridau, not only won the triumph

of his career as a great character ar

tist, but his portrait in the part was the most conspicuous and greatly admired in the Salon of the following spring.

After four months at the Theater

National de l'Odeon, M. Gemier transplanted the play to the Theater An-

tolne where it excited ever greater

enthusiasm than at its birthplace.

Such a play would not go begging

for production on the English and American stage and Charles Frohman,

who dominates the French market by justice of his dealings with the playwrights of France, secured the alien

rights to the play for Otis Skinner's

use. . As produced in New York last sea

son, the play ran for four months at the Hudson Theater, to overflowing

houses. The New Phillips. Casad and company will be the main feature at the New Phillips this week end in a little comedy skit, bubbling over with humor, and with laughable situations. The acting of the company is good and makes the act one of the best on this season's circuit. Leo and Chapman have a little bunch tucked away in a playlet called "Wanted A Donkey." Harry E. Pierce, monologuist has a happy factulty of pleasing audiences and keeping them 'in a good humor. His line of amusement is fresh and free from the time worn jokes used by a great many actors. Three "films of motion pictures and the illustrated song complete the program.

Aubrey Stock Co. That Aubrey Stock company played

to capacity at the Gennett last night

and presented one of the best plays ever seen here by .any repertoire com

pany. The company is not only ac

tors and actresses but they present each and every" bill with all their own

special scenery and electric effects.

No doubt this will be the most enjoyable week of any that they have had for many months as the company has several feature bills and a couple novelties to offer. Thursday night the company offers $25 in gold and offers to pay all expenses to anyone who will be married in ; full view of the audience and on Saturday night the beautiful diamond ring on exhibition in Jenkins store will be given to some one as a souvenir. Friday night "Why Girls Leave Home" is offered.

Too Many Wives." "Too Many Wives," a melange of music, mirth, song and dance will be the unusually good offering at the Gennett theater January 27, and will introduce Joe Morris In the new and original character of Isidore Meyer from Kansas City. Joe Morris needs no introduction to the theatrical world as his remarkable success on the vaudeville stage where for years he has been a headliner is known to all, and his success has continued in the musical field. The comedy is said to be full

of action and well written, and with the excellent company presenting it,

i it has met with instant success.

FINDS EIGHTH MOONjF JUPITER

Photographed at Greenwich

Observatory. Boston, Mass., Jan. 21. A cablegram has been received at. the Harvard College Observatory stating that

the eighth moon f Jupiter, discovered only within the last two years, has been photographed at the Greenwich Observatory.' The position of the satellite as determined when photographed, coincided very closely with its theoretical position, calculated after the satellite was discovered. In astronomical language, this eighth satellite, on January 16, when photographed at Greenwich, was in right ascension 10 hours 56 minutes 46.7 seconds, and its declination was plus 7 degrees 40 minutes and 46 seconds. The daily motion was in right ascension minus one minute and in declination plus one minute.

An ingenious device by which the depth of a swift river above a high fall in Ontario was accertained Is described in the Engineering an Mining Journal. It was too dangerous to make soundings from a boat, so Mr. Hixon planted a transit wire on one bank, and from it carried a strong wire, with a heavy lead weight at the end, to the opposite shore. The wire was drawn out, and the weight was gradually pulled across on the bottom

of the river. At stated intervals a

sight along the wire from the transit to the point where the wire dipped in

to the water gave the inclination of the straight line. The length of sub

merged wire and its angle with the

water surface being known, it was easy to calculate the depth at the

various points.

LAUDED JO OFFICES Wayne County Prohibitionists Failed to Secure Plums - At District Meeting. WAS HELD AT RUSHVILLE

At the district -meeting of the Prohibition party of the "old burnt" at Rushville yesterday, Wayne county

delegates did not come in for any of the offices. W. R. Porter, of Connersvllle, was chosen district chairman and H. C. Pitts, of Rush county, was elected secretary and treasurer. In its account of the meeting, the Rushville Republican says In its news columns: For enthusiasts the Prohis are on a par with Socialists. And they can dream such fantastic and fairy-like dreams as only the Socialist can dream without taking dope. They are opposed to county option; they are opposed to the anti-saloon league and last, but not least, they are opposed to the Republican party. The last reason is the strongest plank in their platform. It is their . chief delight to get into the fight and injure the Republican cause, even though the party backed by the liquor interest wins out through their assistance.

They fear for their life now, for they are fast losing strength in their former Gibraltar strongholds. The old parties make inroads on their number whenr the temperance question Is acute.

tAGED LIONS." ; Th. Big Brutes Get Lazy and Spirit lees as They Grew Old. As be grows old a lion geta lasy

and spiritless, says Everybody's. The

haughty beast that stares at the crowd

outside his cage usually ta as fierce of spirit as a fat night .watchman who bltnka out upon the dark world

through the circle of light cast by the

lamp at his feet With plenty to eat, nothing to annoy

him and a keeper to look after his cage, the king of beasts becomes as peaceful, portly and self satisfied as some of our latter day human saonarchs, whose ministers of army, navy, state and other things take proper care of the regal edge and see to It that the usual three square meals per day await the royal gullet at the proper hours. " r, The story book Impression that lions are always on the hunt in their native jungle is quite at variance with the truth. Indeed, the older lions will frequently go hungry or seek the leavings of another beast's kill rather than summon the energy to hunt prey for themselves. In a group of ten or twelve trained lions two or three young, nervous animals usually supply the act with all Its dash and spirit. The others are somnambulists. Tigers, too, frequently grow lethargic with advancing years, but never to such a degree as the aging lion. There Is always a pinch of ginger in the big striped cat. For that reason be makes a more spectacular performer than the lion and usually a tougher proposition f or the trainer.
