Municipal Light Plant in Good Hands, Shown by Increase In Receipts and Expense Decrease.
The, report of Charles Rogers, superintendent of the' Municipal Light plant for the calendar year, 1908, showed the excess .of receipts over
operating expense to be $31,796.45. This shows the plant is on a, paying basis. The plant Is also growing in popular favor as Is shown by the list of patrons who now number between S2.300 and 2,400. City Clerk C. W. i Merrill states that there are many factories considering putting in elecItrlcal machinery and that during the ensuing year the business will no doubt be on as steady an increase as during the past. f Is In Good Hands. Furthermore the plant's management as shown by the increase in receipts and a decrease in expenses seems to be in good hands. During 190$ the receipts were $2,904.93 nftore than in 1907. The operating expense was $938.08 less during the year than was that of the preceeding year. A very noticeable gain is shown in the matter of saving on building and equipment. This expense for .1908 was $19,001.56 less than In 1907. 1 Makes up Its Deficit. . "At the end of the year 1907 the plant had a deficit of $6,847.50 due to the installation of a new unit and at the end of last year the plant had over and above operating expenses and building and equipment, $15,967.37," stated City Clerk C. W. Merrill last evening in commendation of what the plant was doing. . One large expense to the plant during, the past year was the. change of the . Main street overhead . system to the A street lines in compliance with the city's ordinance, .that all wires be removed from Main street. This expense amounted to abbut $4,000 and was charged to building and equipment; Mr. Roger's report, which was approved and placed on file, in full Is as

On Being Mean. The question arises can one be economical without being mean? A man who is naturally mean will always be economical. If a man who is not economical attempts to become so he will learn to be mean. If he has a generous Impulse be must curb it During the first part of our lives we should be as mean as we can. When we have accumulated more than we need we should devote the last part to cultivating our generous impulses. No successful man is a philanthropist before be Is fifty. Life.

WAYS OF TffE ARABS. Dodging the Evil Eye and Tests of Filial Piety. Very curious to the occidental mind are some of the ways of Arabia and other Mohammedan countries. A traveler says: "One of the objects of the most anxious solicitude for' Mohammedan parents Is the shielding of their children from the evil eye. Any person expressing admiration for a child except by pious ejaculation or the invocation of blessings upon the prophet fills the heart of the parent with apprehension. When children are to be taken Into the street their faces are often even smeared with mud or greasy substances lest their comeliness should attract attention, and in order that the person of the child Itself should escape attention gaudy and glittering ornaments are hung about It and written charms sewed into leather medallions suspended from its neck. "One of the best of Arab characteristics is that of filial piety. Sons and daughters of deceased parents take upon themselves an sorts of Irksome tasks accounted as expiatory of the minor faults committed by the departed ones during their lifetime and discharging' faithfully every payment or obligation left unfulfilled by dead parents, for has not the prophet said that martyrdom even will not atone for an unpaid debt? "Eloquence is accounted the greatest of all possible gifts. According to Arab tradition, the most superlative degree of eloquence was attained by King David, such being the beauty of his diction, added to the poetry of bis words, that when be declaimed the Psalms even birds and wild beasts were spellbound, whOe on some occasions as many as 400 men died from the excess of delight Induced by his reading." "Have you - been fumigating the booksr - "No, we haven't, said the librarian, "but some subscriber has. Many of our patrons like to do their own fumigating. Usually they use carbolic add.
