It Is believed at Rome that a train which left Reggio on the morning of the earthquake, was overwhelmed by a tidal wave as nothing ha I been heard of the train or passengers. The king has ordered royal palaces at Caserta and Naples turned Into hospitals and hundreds of the injured are already occupying them. The American gunboat Scorpion will arrive at Messina Monday to assist the other foreign ships In transporting the refugees. Statistics of the dead and the survlvers are still impossible to obtain but from calculations based on the populations and the estimate of the survivers indicates that the figures heretofore given out will not be found to have been exaggerations. There are large numbers dying daily" from hunger and exposure. This .will probably swell the final total. Tlte actual property loss is now estimated at a billion dollars including some four thousand ships of all descriptions. Semola Still Alive. A report from Catania says that the; rescuers at Messina today discovered Marquis Semola still alive in the cellar of Mb ruined castle. He is imprisoned by tons of debris which may crash upon him before he can be reached. The Marquis bis plenty of food and shouts to the rescuers to save those in greater peril. The discovery that he Is alive has awakened a hope that there may be still many others alive In the ruins and efforts of the rescuers are being redoubled. DEATHS CONFIRMED. Definitely Known Consuls Cheney, Lupton and Pierce Killed. Washington, Jan. 2. The State department has a cablegram from the consulate at Naples announcing the safety of General Charles Hall, U. S. A- retired, who was supposed to have lost his life at Messina. It also an nounces the messenger of the Amerl can consul at Messina arrived at Na pies reporting the death of Consuls Cheney, Lupton and Pierce and that the recovery of their bodies was im possible. , Anxiety for Heath Muncie, Ind., Jan. 2. Anxiety is felt for the safety of Perry S.
