Washington, Dec. 21. Figures gathered by the bureau of statistics show that the average American citTzen consumes half his own weight In sugar every year, and Uncle Sam's sugar bill averages $l,000,0QO a day. The total consumption of sugar In the United States in 1907, which is the latest year for which statistics are available reaches 7,089,667,975 pounds. "Calculating this enormous total at the average retail price of 5 cents a pound," the report states, "we get a total of $372,000,000 as its cost to the consumer, or more than $1,000,000 for each of the 365 days of the year." The statement shows that 21.3 per cent, or 1,511,000,000 pounds of the bugar consumption of the country, was of home production; 17.7 per cent, or 1,254,000 pounds was brought from our Insular possessions, and the remaining 61 per cent, or 4,307,000,000 pounds came from foreign countries. Fortythree million pounds was the aggregate of the exportation of sugar from this country. Record Made in 1907. The United States sugar record for 1907 was unique in that the quantity

Indianapolis, Ind., Dec. 21. The use

of water from shallow wells and from

streams that are polluted will be denounced in strong terms by H. E. Barnard, state food and drug commissioner, in his annual repo-t which has

just gone to the printer. During the year samples of water from thirty-three streams in Indiana were examined, all samples being of water used for drinking purposes, either filtered or otherwise. Twentyfive stream supplies were found to be good, seven bad and one doubtful.

of that product imported from foreign

countries was larger than ever before: the quantity brought from our island possessions was larger than in any previous year; the quantity produced at home exceeded that of any other year; the quantity exported was larger than in any year of the last decade and the per capita consumption was the largest ever recorded, an average of 82.6 pounds for each man, woman and child rof continental United States. j An equally Interesting feature of this record year of 1907 was the fact that the production of beet sugar for the first time exceeded the production of cane sugar, the product of the year being: Cane sugar, 544.000,000 pounds; beet sugar 967,000,000 pounds. j The world's production practically ', has doubled in the last twenty years, having grown from 17,000,000,000 pounds in 1887 to 32.000,000,000 : pounds in 1007, and, while the United ! States consumed about 18 per cent of i the total world's production of 1887, j it consumed 22 per cent of the greatly ! increased production of 1907. Beets ; now supply one-half of the grand to

tal produced, while twenty years ago they supplied but about one-third of the total product.

Thirty-six samples from ponds or lakes were examined and twenty-four were found good, five bad and seven were receiving pollution, but not in sufficient quantity to cause condemnation. The report 6hows that the deep-well supply, commonly thought absolutely pure is not always pure. Two hundred and eighty eight samples of water from detp wells were examined and 220 were found good, forty-seven so polluted as to be called bad, and twenty-one doubtful. Of the 419 samples from shallow wells, 209, were unqualifiedly bad. Shallow wells come in for condemnation without reservation at the hands of the commissioner, who says: "The constant use of shallow wells

by city and town dwellers ia a re-j proach upon our intelligence. The! use of such Wells should be forbidden ! by city authorities, and connection with the mains of public water supplies forced, if need be. It is as necessary , to protect the people from typhoid fever as to protect their somes from fire or their property from the thief. Over

GO per cent, of the water taken from shallow wells is unfit for drinking purposes." Cistern water used extensively for drinking purposes in the belief that It is pure, was found bad by the commissioner in about one-half of the sam

ples examined. This Is due, the department Judges, to the fact that cisterns from which these samples were i taken, are not 'properly constructed

and permit the entrance of impurities from the surrounding soil. These facts will be presented fully to the legislative committee of the In-

dlana Sanitary and Water Supply association, to be used in argument before the legislature in the interests of legislation to insure a better water supply throughout the state. Alost of the water from streams shown to be unfit for use as sources of water supply is shown in the examination to be affected by pollution from an agency outside the stream bed, and is ordinarily preventable.
