Plot to Slay King Frustrated Manuel's Life in Danger According to Ex-Police Officer Who Makes a Confession After Attempted Suicide.
London, Dec. 19. A local news agency from Lisbon says a plot to kill King Manuel has been frustrated. King Manuel's recent hurried return to Lisbon from Oporto, horses galloping and carriage closed gave rise to many rumors at the time. It is said the police scented a plot to kill the king and took precautions.
The plot was learned through an ex-police officer named Julio Mendez, after he had tried to commit suicide by poisoning. He admitted when interrogated by the authorities that there was a plot to kill the king the day of his arrival in Oporto. It is believed that Mendez is a member of some secret society. N

' Washington, Dec. l'J. Final Instructions regarding the return to the United States of the army of Cuban pacification contemplate final evacuation about April 1. All preliminary details connected with the embarkation of troops will be left to the discretion of the commanding general. The navy department will have the cruiser Prairie call at Havana about January 1. and bring away 400 marines, returning about January 15 for the remainder.

Edward William Bayley, stated to be the ''father of a countess" and a justice of the peace, was sentenced yesterday at Eastbourne to six months' imprisonment In the second division for stealing an overcoat and binocular glasses from the Grand hotel. Prisoner t as stated to be wealthy and of high social connections. The thefts were admitted,, but prisoner's counsel said Bayley suffered from chronic alcoholism, and knew nothing of the thefts. He was practically Insane through drink.

Richard Croker has been besought by many Tammany men to take an active interest In the organization which is facing the 19t9 city election, when a mayor, district attorney, sheriff, county clerk, regisj us t ices, a city court 'justice, and a board of aldermen are to be elected. Croker has been virtually compelled since he has been in town to listen to complaints of Tammany men and others that the organization is demoralized. All sorts of complaints have been made to him. " Many democrats not residents of New York city -have taken a hand. These democrats are fearful lest New York city, virtually the last democratic stronghold in the country above the Mason and Dixon line shall be turned over to the republicans -next year.
