(By Fred L. Thorpe.) New York, Dec. 19. Ther was an unusual eight this afternoon and it will be continued tomorrow in Wall street. Fifty millions of dollars in gold, silver ad paper currency are being carried across the street trora the old quarters of the National City bank to its new home in the former United States customs house. Wall street is filled by a curious, jam, but there Is always on hand an ample force of blue coats to frustrate any attempt at a hold" up. In the remodeled customs? house the National City bank has what is perhaps the most imposing home of any of the financial institutions in America. The old customs house was one of the land marks of the financial district and when it was turned over to the builders a year ago to be remodeled and four stories added the general verdict was thta only a monstrosity could result.. The architects were McKim, Mead and White, of which firm the late Stanford Whit was a member and they solved the problem of adding four stories without changing the building's architectural character and traditions. A Corinthian colonnade was added and the utmost simplicity was preserved, and as a result the structure has lost nothing of its former monumental character. Interior Wonderful. It is the Interior of the new bank fiowever, which excites wonder. The entire lower section la given over to ihe purposes of "banking." The' ceiling is sixty feet high and it is eightythree feet to the top of the central dome. The two solid bronze doors on the Wall street portal are said to be the largest in' the world. - There is nothing in the way of balconies or passageways to mar the open effect of the huge domed chamber. The character of this- interior is that of extreme simplicity, and the whole color bchemo is monotone. The columns, panels and balustrades are of very light gray Italian stono, and the floor is of smoothed stone slabs from Franco. Very little color enters into the scheme of the room and the dome is of dull, uncolored glass and bronze. Vault is Massive. The thing of ; greatest Interest in tho bank, however, is " the vault. It is a massive structure of armor plate, weighing 800 tons. The Bale has every known effective salety device feature. One of the schemes to guard against burglary is a system of steam coila encircling the great Bteel box designed to parboil any person bent on unlawfully getting at the bank's lunds. The steam can be shot into oral buttons scattered about the buildoral buttons scatteder about the building. Should an attempt at robbery be made during banking hours and should every clerk be looking into the muzzle of a six-shooter, yet an office boy up In the floor above could touch a button and "no human being -could enter the vault and live. , . Black Sheep Weeded Out. Announcement of the fact that District Attorney Jerome and .his staff of detectives have been keeping an eye en the curb market caused more or les3 of consternation in. certain: shady financial circles, but as a whole curb brokers expressed satisfaction over the knowledge. In fact, a committee of the most responsible of the curb dealers has been, trying for some months to more closely scrutinize securities offered there and finally secured an agreement among brokers that they would buy or sell no shares in a company which had not filed information c oncerning itself in the form of affidavits. , This committee has already succeeded in weeding out a large number of "black sheep" securities, but it has not. been able to afford complete protection to the public. It is understood it was at the request of this committee that Jerome took a hand in the g&me. If the reforms planned can be carried out a good deal of the financial sheunannigun which characterizes operations on the curb will be abolished. Bingham Restrained. For a future while, at least Police Commissioner Bingham will not be so obstreperous as he has been In the past. Even so great an autocrat as he has made himself is not in a position to defy with impunity a restraining order of the supreme court; and by a court restraining order he is forbidden to Interfere with the affairs of the Lieutenants' Benevilent Association. Bingham issued a set of regulations which forbade any member or members of the force from levying aa assessment on other members of the force or soliciting funds from them for any purpose without his permission. This- yould have prevented the benevolent association from carrying on its operations without first securing the commissioner's permission for each particular assessment. The commissioner, had assumed that he a right to control the affairs of the association and this woud have made his control effective. The court took the view that the association, which has been in existence for fifteen years, had a

right to manago its own affaire and that no order by the commissioner preventing its doing 60 was legal. $130,000,000 Station. The public service commission has under consideration plans for erecting a new union station somewhere on the lower end of Manhattan at an esti: mated cost of about $130,000,000. Should the plans be carried out this would be by far the most costly railroad terminal in the world. The plan provides that the station .should be used for : freight purposes by all the railroads entering New York and for passenger purposes by all roads except the Pennsylvania and New York Central, which have or are providing adequate terminal facilities of their own. In addition fo the subways necessary to accommodate the railroad tracks it is proposed that subways for trucks and automobile trucks should radiate in all directions, relieving the surface streets of much congestion now caused by the carrying of freight. It is proposed that each railroad using the station should pay about ten. million, dollars and that the city should bear the rest of the construction cost.

UNDERGROUND RIVER OF MAMOTH CAVE Echoes Intensified by the Low Water.

Cove City, Ky., Dec. 1U. A startling discovery has just been made in Mammoth cave, which is indisputably the effect of the drought which has prevailed over this section for ninety days. In some' of the avenue where water from ten to feet stood it is now perfectly dry. The effect is more noticeable on Echo river than any place. That famous stream which normally can only be traversed for a short distance, owing to the water and the roof of the cave being so near each other, can now be traveled' for miles, and it Is claimed that the echoes, grand at all times, have been intensified thousands of times by the low water. Many of the avenues and inlets not knownto have existed before have been discovered, and at the present water stage many miles of avenues and grottoes can be seen. While the water is low an effort will be made to locate the exit of the Echo river,

But Four More Shopping Days Department Store Manager Makes a Few Suggestions That Will Greatly Assist the Merchants.

But four more shopping days before Christmas! Tomorrow the real holiday rush will be on, and there will be a frantic scramble to make up for lost time. The stores in .the shopping section have almost doubled their force of salespeople and other help. But there are delays and disappointments that will be inevitable unless purchasers do their part to lessen the burdens of the salespeople.

One manager of a department store makes the following suggestions for shoppers! Do as much shopping as possible before noon. Take small packages with you. Be accurate in giving addresses. Don't ask salespeople where to find things. Consult aisle manager or elevator starter. Keep to the right. Don't block up the aisles. Don't lose your temper.

PRINCE AND ANNA SEEKS LONDON CASH

Usurers Shy of Making Loans To Pair.

London, Dec. 19. One of Prince de Sagan's closest friends has been in London during the past week, negotiating with money-enders for large sums, the security offered being notes of de Saga n, indorsed by the Princess Anna, Thus far, the agent has not succeeded in raising the money, as the

usurers are rather shy of dealing with the de Sagaa affairs. The agent makes no secret that he will receive a handsome commission if he executes his mission, and that with the money the de Sagans intend to repeat- the extravagant display which impoverished the princess, when she was the Countess de Castellane.
