Local Contestants in National Corn Show Receive Prizes. HELP IN STATE VICTORY.
State Geologist Blatchley Wants "B'ar" Adventures Will Incorporate Tales About Bruin in His Report on Mammals of the State.
TWO COUNTY EXHIBITORS WIN CASH PRIZES WHILE FOUR ' OTHERS RECEIVE HONORABLE MENTION FOR DISPLAYS.
- Wayne county growers and exhibi
tors of corn who assisted in adding to the fame of the Omaha Corn show held from December 9 to 19 were "rewarded in every instance. Prizes were given J. 8. Helms and W. E. Eliason, both of Center township, and honorable mention was given the ofier exhibitors Including Will Eikenberry, Frank Kuhlman and Clarence Druley all of Boston township; Will Threewitt of Abington township. J. S. Helms, who was the only Wayne countian to attend the show, returned this morning with the Indiana delegation, very much . pleased with the show' and the benefits resulting to the growers and breeders of corn. After a heated dispute with the Iowa delegation the judges awarded first place to Indiana, Johnson county produce bringing this honor to the state. Neither Mr. Helms nor Mr. Eliason were contestants in the National exhibit Their exhibits were placed In the state entry and as Mr. Helms won eleventh place for the exhibit of ten best ears of yellow corn and Mr. Eliason sexenteenth place with 10 ears of mixed corn, the judges eliminated their exhibits as only first prizes in the different state contests, were ent
ered in the National contest. The
premiums paid the Wayne county exhibitors were as follows: Mr. Helms $3 and Mr. Eliason $2. Those who were awarded honorable mention will receive letters to Buch effect. After the decision of the judges had been made the corn was placed on the
market and sold to the highest bid
der. Surprisingly large bids were received. However none of the prize
corn, other than that exhibited by lo
cal growers was brought back to this county. Joe Overstreet who won the National sweepstakes ' class with an ear of white corn reecived $75. I B.
Clure who won the National first prize
In the exhibit of white corn received
$280 for his exhibit of 10 ears. He
also had on exhibition 70 ears of white corn which, while not prize winners, were very excellent specimens of the breeders art. These he sold for $265. J. W. Whiteside, who carried
away first National prize for best ex
hibit of yellow corn, did not sell his
product. All of the above mentioned National prize winners were residents
of Johnson county, which brought
first prize to Indiana. "This county,
stated Mr. Helms this morning, "no
doubt grows the best corn in the Unit
ed States. The soil is perfect and the
growers have been Interested In the
improvement of the crop for many years in that locality. They had or
ganized themselves into societies for
the Improvement of the crop and the result has been that Johnson county
brought first award to Indiana."
There were 30,000 ears of fine corn exhibited at the show. Never before
was so much fine corn in one building.
Omaha was so well pleased with the results of the show, that it has made
a bid for the affair for next fall. In-
dianapolls was one of the cities which
desired the show but it did not make a very strong, bid and the . committee
having In charge the securing or a place of meeting for next' year will no
doubt decide on Omaha again.

Indiana "b'ar" stories are in demand. Not those relating to the practice of law or to the more common bar practice, but those which have to do with bruin and his days in the state. And if one does not know an authentic bear story, any well founded story about any mammal In Indiana will do. The corner grocery tale that was told by the aged hunter and ti'ipper until it became familiar to the ears of the villagers, has at last come to its own and is in demand. - State Geologist Blatchley wants it. Mr. Blatchley will issue in his re
port for 1908 an- account of the mammals of the state. In this paper he will aim to include all the species of furred animals from mice and moles to bear and bison, that have lived In the
state in historic times, giving keys by which they may be identified and accounts of their habits. Facts about the relation of the more common species to the farmer and the means of exterminating the noxious kind will be included in the work. Mr. Blatchley desires to make the historical account as nearly complete as possible and the co-operation of hunters, trappers and the old settlers who carried the gun or set the trap In Indiana in days long gone by, is requested. Any information as to the date of disappearance of the larger animals, such as deer, wildcats, wolves, beaver, , otter, ' coyotes, bears or other species in any ? county " or section of the state is desired, as well as records of the less common kinds of mice and other small species. -

be postmaster-general already has been announced authoritatively. Reports That Secretary Root contemplates resigning his seat in the cabinet in the immediate future because of the trouble he is experiencing from his knee, which was injured while he was In the West making a speech in behalf of Mr. Taft, are denied in responsible quarters. Secretary Root, acting on the advice of his physician. Is keeping off his feet as much as possible, so as to give his injured knee all the rest he can. In carrying out this program he Is spending considerable of his time at his home, usually coming down to the state department In the mornlnig and
remaining home after lunch. This
serves a double purpose, for in addition to the rest it gives his knee he is able to devote more attention to business than if he were at the department, where he Is constantly Interrupted by callers. .At the same time, he receives such callers at his house as are absolutely necessary. The secretary's knee has not yielded to treatment as rapidly as was hoped for, but bis physicians assure him that it ultimately will get all right.

wine served in that capacity at the ' N
last session. The finance committee is probably the most important from all points of Vw in the entire list of committees. Senator Hanna is a lawyer at Plainfield. He is one of the very careful and conservative members of the legislature, and if he is placed at the head of the finance com
mittee there will be a mighty small !
chance for anything that is not exactly straight and .fair. One of the big questions that the railroad committee will have to deal with at the coming session will be the bills to broaden the powers of the Indiana railroad commission, also the bills to abolish the commission
entirely. It Is expected that bills of ' both kinds will be Introduced, as well as a bill to make the railroad com nils sion a public utilities commission in stead of what it is now. Probably this accounts for the haste displayed . by some of the senators in trying to' land appointments on that committee. It is said that the Anti-Saloon league will make an effort to save as much as possible of the local option bill, even if they have to give up part of it. The plan now outlined is for the league to propose an addition to the present law so as to give township and ward local option, at the same time retaining county local option. Under such a system a ward, a township or an entire county could hold an election. But there is not much chance for such a proposition to be taken seriously at the coming session, for the liberals will claim to see in it a mere sop. They will point out that under such a double-barrel law the anti-saloon forces would continue to work for county local option! and pay no attention to the demands : of any ward or township. The liber-, als want the present law repealed or
replaced with a straieht ward and township statute.

How Throughfarcs Wars Illuminated In the Seventeenth Century. Lighting the streets of a large city in olden times was a far different thing from the illumination of our thoroughfares now. . In 1661 the streets of London were directed to be lighted with candles or lanterns by every householder fronting the main road from nightfall to 9 o'clock, the hour of going to bed. In the last year of King Charles II.'s reign one Edward Ilenlng obtained the right to light the streets with lanterns placed over every tenth door from 6 o'clock on moonless evenings until midnight between October and ApriL During the reign of Queen Anne in July, 1780, Mr. Michael Coke introduced globular glass lamps with oil burners instead of the former glimmering lanterns.
