WHITE PLAGUE IS DEADLY DISEASE
One Out of Every Seven Who Die. Succumb From Its Effects. THE RED CROSS STAMP. INCEPTION OF FIGHT AGAINST CONSUMPTION BUT THE ISSU ANCE OF RED CROSS STAMPS OVER THE COUNTRY. I ' But-few of the hundreds of Richmond people who are baying the Red Cross stamps now on sale in this city, realize that they are-contributing to the Rd Cross "war" fund, to be used In the great battle against" humanity's curse consumption. . Dr. J. E. King, county health officer, estimates that in this county one in every seven deaths is caused by consumption. This rate instead of being diminished Is gradually increasing, consequently the medical fraternity of this county Is heart and soul with the efforts of the Red Cross Bociety in its nationwide campaign against the pestilence. Speaking of the origin of the Red Cross Christmas stamp, E. P. Blssell, secretary of the Delaware branch of the American National Red Cross society, said: "What is the Christmas stamp?" This question was asked by tens of thousands of people in Delaware and Pennsylvania last December. It will be asked from one end of the United States to the other this Christmas. For to understand what the Christmas Btamp means will surely be for all readers to desire to help it along, and to add it to their Christmas as part of the spirit of the most beautiful day in. the year. "On December 7, 1907, the inhabi- . tants of Wilmington, Delaware, found staring at them from every trolleycar fender these words: y For Sale Now The Christmas Stamp Ask Anybody "This was quite enough to rouse public curiosity; but, in addition, every prominent drug and department store . had in its window, or somewhere along its counters, the legend: "Buy The Christmas Stamp" And in the corridor of the post-office a young girl, dressed as a Re'd Cross nurse, sat behind a table with a roll of stamps, the like of which no one had seen before; each- stamp bore a wreath of holly, a tiny red cross, and "Merry Christmas." "What sort of stamp was this that had come to town? First and fore most, qnestloners found out that it was issued by the Red Cross, that great organization that comes to the rescue in times of war, pestilence, famine and disaster. But what war, pestilence, famine or disaster was there in prosperous Wilmington? The answer to that, set the buyers think ing. There was a pestilence in Wilmington, claiming one death out of every seven. It had reigned for years. claiming the best and brightest out of many a family. The Delaware Red Cross had issued its stamps to aid in attacking this pestilence the White Plague of consumption and to "stamp it out" in conjunction with the societies already at work." SPENDING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS EXPERIMENTING The Great Scientist Made a Great Discovery. When'a man is in doubt, it becomes his duty to investigate and when proof Is piled upon proof, it is time to be convinced. There is nothing in life so valuable as good health. The reporter of this article personally knows of several people here that are rapidly regaining their health because they investigated the proofs produced by the Root Juice people and were convinced. We positively know that an eminent scientist devot ed several years of his life to hard study and spent over ten thousand dollars experimenting before the afflicted were permitted to try his great discovery, which is now curing peo ple all over the country, after all oth er remedies had failed. If you bloat and belch sour gases, if your food lays heavy on the stomach, if you have any symptoms of indigestion, we honestly believe that one dose of Root Juice will convince you of its wonderful merits. Root Juice soothes and heals the mucous lining of the stomach, bowels and bladder and at the same time heals and strengthens the liver and kidnevs. It nrevents fermentation of food in the stomach and bowels and stops formation of acid by causing the digestive fluids to be supplied in sufficient quantities in a natural way and giving the liver and kidney health and strength to do the work nature intended them to do. The blood will soon be filtered of all impurities and good, rich blood will be made to nourish the whole body Poor, weak women and dyspeptic, backacMng rheumatic men take this advice before -it is too late. Go im mediately and get a bottle of Root Juice. Now on sale, $1 a bottle, or 3 bottles for $2.50, at A. G. Luken's drug store. 1 All the women prisoners at the Clerkenwell sesions recently appear ed in the dock wearing their hats The rule of "no hatpins" was strictly enforced, bat their absence in no way troubled the women. Indeed, one bal anced a hat more than six feet In cir cumference without the slightest trace of anxiety. How she did it only a wo man could tell. Women as stenographers have been greatly Increased in number in New York city during the last year and there are now about 114200 of them
