. The English Salesman's Woes. The English salesman at the glove counter of the department store was a model of industry, politeness, skill. "You see," he said to a floorwalker, "it is such a pleasure, after the life of the London shops, to work in a republic, to work where you are treated like a man.
"In my London shop I was treated like a thief. The df nen. every time I went In or out, fei. .ne all over with their hands. If they struck a big lump, such as two handkerchiefs, on me. their faces would lighten, and Td have to bring the lump out for Inspection. These doormen even had the right to make you strip. They used the right often If they disliked you. and In embarrassment you revealed to their cruel eyes your torn, cheap underwear, and so forth. "If you bought a new suit, you were an object if suspicion, and the house detective shadowed you. If you took a girl to the theater or a music hall, you'd find a house detective at your elbow, and for a month afterward you'd be stripped and searched every day or so. "All this, mind you. for about $6 a week!" Cincinnati Enquirer.

"But. look here," said the indignant antiquary. "In my article on early Grecian sculpture 1 distinctly mentioned Phidias. Why has his name been deleted?" The editor smiled quietly. "When," he said, "you find old man Phidias getting his work advertised in this paper under 5 shillings a line you come right around and let me know." Bangkok Times.
Friends of Men Arrested in
Reelfoot Rider Cases Await Trials.
ORDER VS. LAWLESSNESS
Union City,. Tenn., Dec, 14.-Clad In
rough homespun, with ragged trousers
tucked deep into cowskin boots, with straggling beards and huge slouch hats but always with the inevitable longbarreled rifle or big pistol, in plain
view, denzens of the Reelfoot district
assembled here for the opening scene of the night riger trials.
They are the friends and relatives of
the men who are held under military guard over at the barracks. They Ig
nore the townspeople, or glance at them with scowls. Silently and singly
they wander through the streets or
stand for hours outside the barracks, gazing curiously up at the windows of
the room above in which their friends
are held.
They feel keenly this trouble, do 1
these rough, but simply grown-up chil
dren of the Tennessee backwoods. They
believe that they are being persecuted. The issue is clearly drawn. There is no misunderstanding. Both sides are face to face ready for the" struggle,
neither asking or granting quarter. It is a finished fight between organized lawlessness and the forces of order.
XMAS FEAST DAY - NOT A FAST DAY Christmas, although it comes on Friday, is to be a feast and not a fast day. A special dispensation has for centuries been in force in the Roman Catholic Church, whereby Catholics are allowed to eat meat on Christmas when it falls on Friday. But New Year's Day will be a fast day. The day before Christmas is always a fast day, unless it falls on Monday. In such cases the fast is observed the preceding Saturday.

FOUND WIFE IN ANOTHER EMBRACE Illinois Man Murdered Both According to Plan.
Roodhouse, 111., Dec. 14. Roodhouse and Greene county are in a frenzy of excitement over a double murder here Saturday night. William Barnhart, employe of the Chicago and Alton railroad, shot and killed his wife in
Mrs. Emma Tracy's boarding house.
Half an hour later he went to the Hotel Roodhouse, and, after caution
ing a group of men there to get out of range, sent one bullet through the
heart and another just below the heart
of Carl Clapp, manager of a grain elevator here.
Barnhart charged that Clapp and his wife had been too friendly. Barnhart admitted his crime, and said he had carefully planned it." "I went to my home at 8 o'clock Saturday night and found it locked," he said. "I broke the outer door and then found the bedroom locked, broke it open and found my wife in Clapp's embrace."

The Kempaper Man's Plctare t tk Great Ra.alan General. McGahan was the correspondent whe first described to Europe the Bulga rian atrocities. What a brilliant crea ture he was, with his steel blue eyea his face as delicately chiseled at though It were of marble,' his lithe
light frame and that suggestion of ab solute courage, iron resolve, under neath the almost feminine tininess of the features. He was one of the in timates of Scobeleff Indeed, the met were so attached to each other thai Scobeleff nearly always insisted thai McGahan should share his tent with him, and McGahan was in the tent of Scobeleff the night after the disastrous assault on Plevna. Scobelefl was, said McGahan, a wonderful pic ture of the horrors and terrors of war His face was black with powder, his uniform was in rags, and his sword was twisted like a corkscrew. It is evident from this description that Sco beleff took part with his own hand in some of the work of the day. Ther was a sequel, by the way, to this pie ture. I am not quite sure whethei McGahan published it, but be told 11 to me. Scobeleff was always a dandy Even in leading a charge he was dressed with dandical precision. In th middle of the night McGahan wai woke up, and be saw Scobeleff dressing himself with great care, putting on a new uniform and even perfuming his hair and clothes. And then came another transformation. Scobeleff, hig elaborate toilet finished, sat down on his bed and burst Into a shower ol tears and a tempest of sobs, thinking over all his poor men who had been so vainly sacrificed in the attempt to gain the fortress.
