XMAS FEAST DAY - NOT A FAST DAY Christmas, although it comes on Friday, is to be a feast and not a fast day. A special dispensation has for centuries been in force in the Roman Catholic Church, whereby Catholics are allowed to eat meat on Christmas when it falls on Friday. But New Year's Day will be a fast day. The day before Christmas is always a fast day, unless it falls on Monday. In such cases the fast is observed the preceding Saturday.
