IS BY REPORT Business of Entire Nation Has Improved Greatly in Short Time. FIRM ISSUES A REPORT. New York, November 30.No better proof of the' revival of business could be furnished the business men of the United States, than the announcement by the long established and conservative house of The H. B. Claflin company, of the doubling of their force of traveling salesmen. Each department of that Immense merchandising establishment will hereafter be represented upon the road by special salesmen. These to be In addition to their force of general salesmen. The H. B. Claflin Company has been for more than two generations the great distributing outlet for the New England manufacturers of cottons, woolen and various other classes of goods. In the fifties and sixties of the last century, when H. B. Claflin was in his prime the rivalry at times between the firm and that of A. T. Stewart & Co., in the lines of domestic and severe. Especially was this the case in the days of rapid advance in values of all classes of goods during 1861, 1862, 1SG3 and 184. Often the purchasers from either firm could reap large profits upon their purchases before they would receive their goods, and it was frequently a battle royal between Claflin & Co., and Stewart & Co., for the patronage of the merchants, the large profits upon accumulated stock, enabling them if they desired, to cut current rates in order to gain trade. IS MAN FAILING? Washington. D. C, Nov. 30. The description of the battle of man against the.iinseen forces of nature is the chief feature of the annual report of the Panama canal commission, made public tonight. The vague reports of hai'oc wrought by underground rivers. Takes and fissures that have come from the canal zone during the past five months are fully confirmed over the official signature of Chairman Goethals and Secretary of War Wright. Three times has the commission been compelled to change the course of the canal to avoid subterranean water courses, and the end is not yet. Not only the great Gatun dam has had to be removed, but several locks have had to be constructed without regard to the original plans. In one stretch of the cut twentythree miles In length the channel has had to be dug in such a manner that it crosses the Chagres river at twenty-three points. Then, again, earthquakes, landslides and inundations at dJfferrent seasons make playthings of the works of man. The report tells about the erection of an observatory for recording the earth's tremors and their relation to landslides, inundations and underground rivers. Notwithstanding the many obstacles in the way, the commission is hopeful for the ultimate triumph and expresses the hope that the canal will be opened In 1912.
